Trying to decide where to travel in September? You’re in the right place.
September might just be the best month to travel and its certainly my favorite. The summer crowds have melted away, the weather is still absolutely beautiful in so many destinations, and many places truly hit their sweet spot during this time.
It’s that perfect balance of having all the perks of summer, but with fewer tourists and a bit more space to enjoy it all!
September is my favorite month to travel, and over the past 10 years, my husband and I have made the most of it exploring places from the Greek Islands to Copenhagen to California’s Napa Valley.

Here are my favorite destinations in September!
Let’s get started with my favorite places that I have traveled in September…
1. Greek Islands, Greece

We always go to Greece in September and there’s a reason why. The water is perfect after heating up all summer, and the weather is warm with a breezy coastal feel that makes everything feel more enjoyable (and less humid).
It’s also a quieter time to visit. European summer holidays are over and kids in the U.S. are back in school, so the crowds have thinned out. You can enjoy the best beaches, restaurants, and towns without the rush. It’s still busy and you need to plan early, but nothing like peak summer season!
My favorite islands are Sifnos and Milos. Sifnos is slow-paced and charming, a lesser-known spot with a seriously impressive foodie scene. I always eat so well there. My favorite beachside restaurants in Sifnos are Omega 3, Cantina, and Pelicanos. You can’t go wrong with fresh seafood, crisp white wine, and a sunset view.
Milos is all about the beaches and the boat days. Don’t miss Sarakiniko, also called the “moon beach” for its surreal white rock formations. The coastline here is unlike anything else, and many of the best swimming spots are only accessible by boat. I always recommend spending at least one full day sailing around the island of Milos.
Pairing these two Cycladic islands make the perfect combo of adventure, great food, plenty of blue-domed churches and relaxation!
There are hundreds of Greek Islands so there’s sure to be one you’ll love!
Where to Stay in Greece
I’ve stayed at some incredible hotels in the Greek Islands that I always recommend.

On Sifnos, Verina Astra is peaceful and luxurious with amazing views and a beautiful breakfast spread every morning. We’ve stayed here twice and it’s just hard to beat for it’s location with the most incredible views over the Aegean Sea – sunrise here is unreal!!
On Milos, I love Milos Breeze Boutique Hotel for its sleek style and sweeping sea views. We loved the location that was walkable to Pollonia (main town) and the infinity pool that overlooked it! PRO TIP: Don’t miss the breakfast buffet!
If you’re island-hopping and including Mykonos, Cali Mykonos is a standout. It’s family-friendly, private, and offers a quieter side of the island that still feels elevated and special. We stayed here with out 11 month old baby when visiting Greece last summer and it exceeded expectations!
If you’re dreaming of a peaceful, sunny escape with incredible food, laid-back luxury, and some of the best beaches in Europe, the Greek Islands in September are hard to beat.
2. Amalfi Coast, Italy

The Amalfi Coast in September still feels summery, but without the chaos of peak season. The weather is warm, the water is perfect for swimming, and the crowds have thinned just enough to make everything more enjoyable from restaurant reservations to scenic drives.
I went to Amalfi for my babymoon, and it was a dream. We stayed at Borgo Santandrea, a stunning, chic hotel perched above the sea. It was the perfect base – quiet, stylish, and full of thoughtful details that made our stay feel really special.
One of the highlights was sailing along the coast. We spent a day on the water, cruising past the colorful cliffs of Positano, swimming in hidden coves, and soaking up the sunshine.
Back on land, we dined everywhere from Michelin-starred Alici to family-run Da Ciccio’s, where the food was divine and the hospitality even better! There are so many amazing places to eat in Amalfi!
There’s so much to do in the Amalfi Coast, whether it’s shopping for linen and ceramics in Positano, tasting fresh limoncello, visiting historic churches and villas, or taking a day trip to Capri or Ravello. You can fill your days with adventure or take it slow with a book and a spritz by the sea.
Where to Stay in the Amalfi Coast

For the ultimate Amalfi Coast experience, Borgo Santandrea is my top pick. It’s a luxury gem tucked into the cliffs, offering sweeping sea views, an intimate feel, and impeccable service. Plus, the hotel’s private beach and hillside pool make it an ideal place to relax and unwind after a day of exploration.
If you’re looking for other great options for where stay in Amalfi Coast, Le Sirenuse in Positano is a classic choice. It’s the epitome of coastal chic and perfect for those who want to be close to the town’s bustling charm while enjoying top-tier amenities.
For something equally luxurious but with a more traditional vibe, Hotel Santa Caterina in Amalfi is a dream. The views, the beach club, and the stunning gardens all make it feel like a true escape.
If you want that classic Amalfi Coast beauty without the summer madness, September is a sweet spot.
3. Switzerland

September in Switzerland is incredible with clear skies, mild temperatures, and open trails that make it the perfect month for hiking, exploring, and soaking up all those jaw-dropping Alpine views. We’ve visited Switzerland a few times, including a five-day Swiss road trip through Geneva, Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, and Bern, and September was such a great month to go.
Everything felt lush and green, and the weather was warmer than you’d expect for the mountains. It was ideal for driving from one charming town to the next, stopping for scenic hikes, lakeside walks, and the occasional chocolate break.
Switzerland is a dream for nature lovers, but also incredibly clean, easy to get around, and full of world-class food, design, and hospitality. Whether you’re cruising across Lake Lucerne, hiking in the Bernese Oberland, or wandering the streets of Zurich’s Old Town, it all feels like a storybook.
Where to Stay in Switzerland

We stayed at some amazing hotels during our road trip. In Geneva, Hotel Longemalle is a charming boutique hotel with a fantastic location and beautifully designed rooms. We’ve stayed here twice now and will choose it again!
In Zurich, I loved Hotel Storchen, right on the river with that classic old-world elegance. We loved staying here in our room that overlooked the historic streets. Our windows opened and we could hear the church bells which was lovely!
And for a true luxury escape, Bürgenstock Resort & Alpine Spa near Lucerne is unmatched—stunning views, endless spa treatments, and a peaceful setting high above the lake. This is easily one of the nicest luxury hotels we’ve stayed in and can not recommend enough. The spa and infinity pool high above Lake Lucerne is an absolute dream!! Check rates and availability here!
4. Napa Valley, California

September is one of the best times to visit Napa Valley. It’s harvest season, when the vineyards are buzzing with activity, the grapes are at their peak, and wine country truly comes alive.
We went on a group trip with friends and it was incredible. We visited so many wineries! Chateau Montelena stood out for its crisp, iconic Chardonnay and Duckhorn was perfect for a long, lazy lunch on their big wraparound porch. We even biked to a few wineries, which was such a fun and scenic way to get around.
The energy in Napa this time of year is contagious. The weather is warm and dry, perfect for wine tasting, vineyard tours, and lingering dinners under the stars.
Where to Stay in Napa Valley, California
We stayed at The Westin Verasa Napa, and it was perfect for our group. It’s just a short walk to downtown Napa, which made heading to dinner easy.We booked a couple of suites with multiple bedrooms, and it gave us plenty of space while still feeling connected.
Great location, comfortable rooms, and ideal for groups or families looking for convenience and comfort.
5. Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen in September is effortlessly cool. You’ll get crisp mornings, mild afternoons, and way fewer tourists than in the peak summer months. I especially love the first couple weeks of September when the city still feels alive with energy, but with a cozy shift toward fall.
When I visited in September, the weather was perfect for biking around the city, taking a canal cruise, and soaking up that signature Nordic charm. Copenhagen is one of my favorite cities in the world. It’s small enough to explore easily, but packed with personality, design, and some of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to.
The food scene is next-level from pastries and smørrebrød to Michelin-starred experiences. Whether you’re hitting the Torvehallerne market or dining somewhere a bit more upscale, you’ll eat well here.
Where to Stay in Copenhagen

I’ve stayed in Copenhagen many times and always go back to my two favorites. For cozy, romantic hygge vibes, stay at Hotel Sanders. It’s tucked away near Nyhavn and feels like a warm, stylish retreat.

If you’re looking for something trendier and lively, Villa Copenhagen is a great pick right near Tivoli Gardens with a rooftop pool, amazing design, and a buzzy atmosphere. It’s a great pick for families too – they even offered our baby a robe to wear at the pool! It was sooo cute!
I’ve stayed at both several times, and you really can’t go wrong. I have a whole breakdown of the best areas to stay in Copenhagen too!

6. Charleston, South Carolina

September in Charleston is ideal with warm weather, fewer crowds, and that sweet spot between the summer rush and fall getaways. I live here and it’s honestly one of my favorite months in the city.
The days are still beach-worthy, especially if you head to Sullivan’s Island or Folly. But it’s also the perfect time to stroll the cobblestone streets downtown, explore historic homes, and admire the city’s European charm without the heat or humidity of peak summer.
And let’s talk food—Charleston’s culinary scene is incredible. Whether you’re grabbing a biscuit at a neighborhood café, dining on fresh seafood with a harbor view, or splurging on a chef’s tasting menu, this is a city made for food lovers.
Where to Stay in Charleston, SC
Now for my favorite hotels in Charleston!
If you’re visiting in September, check into The Dewberry for stylish design and a rooftop bar with sunset views over the city. I’ve stayed here for staycations and frequent their restaurants and spa throughout the year!
For timeless Southern luxury, The Charleston Place is a classic with top-notch service and a central location.
Want something quieter and more intimate, Zero George is tucked away in a historic home and perfect for a romantic or relaxing escape. Don’t miss their restaurant for their tasting menu that’s the closest thing to Michelin star status in Charleston. Pro tip- sit on the patio under the string lights!

7. Munich, Germany

Munich in September is such a fun time to visit. Oktoberfest kicks off in the last week of the month, bringing festive energy, beer gardens, and Bavarian culture to life, but even before the celebration begins, the city feels vibrant and welcoming.
We visited Munich for 3 days with our toddler just before Oktoberfest started and had the best few days. We wandered through Marienplatz, strolled the English Garden (and watched the famous river surfers), and dined at family-friendly spots like Pfistermühle and Les Deux—both delicious and accommodating to our little one.
Munich blends history, charm, and modern convenience beautifully. You’ll find stunning architecture, green spaces, and a relaxed pace that makes it great for families, couples, or even a solo trip.
Where to Stay in Munich
We stayed at Rosewood Munich and it’s easily one of the nicest hotels we’ve ever booked in a city. The rooms are immaculate, the service is top-notch, and somehow it still felt incredibly welcoming with a baby in tow. They provided so many nice amenities from a rubber bath mat to swim diapers for the pool! See my full review of Rosewood Munich here.
We loved the pool, the thoughtful touches, and the excellent on-site dining. The location is also unbeatable—perfect for walking everywhere.
8. French Polynesia

French Polynesia is an amazing destination to travel in September. It’s dry season, which means you’ll get sunny skies, calm turquoise waters, and ideal weather for everything from reef swims to lazy afternoons in an overwater bungalow. This is prime season to visit before the holiday crowds arrive but with all the beauty at its best.
September is perfect for spending your days barefoot and blissed out. Swim alongside vibrant marine life on the reef, snorkel or dive in clear lagoons, sail at sunset, and enjoy long meals with your toes in the sand. The sunsets are unreal this time of year with fiery pinks and oranges reflected across the water.
French Polynesia also surprises people with its food. Think French technique meets tropical flavors—fresh seafood, exotic fruit, and local specialties like poisson cru. Whether you’re dining at your resort or trying a hidden beachside café, the meals here are memorable.
Where to Stay in French Polynesia
If you’re dreaming of an overwater bungalow, this is the place. For ultra-luxury, stay at the Four Seasons Bora Bora, where the service is next-level and the views don’t feel real.
For the ultimate private island escape, The Brando is in a league of its own. It’s secluded, sustainable, and incredibly special perfect for a once-in-a-lifetime kind of trip.
We had actually booked our honeymoon at both of these hotels until some unexpected events back in 2020 prevented us from going. I’m still scheming a chance to make up for it!
9. Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como is a dream September destination! The weather is still warm, perfect for long lunches by the water and leisurely strolls through charming lakeside towns—but without the summer rush. It’s the ideal time to experience the beauty of the lake without feeling overcrowded.
This year, we’re heading to Lake Como in September, and I can’t wait for the classic boat cruise around the lake. The views of the surrounding mountains and the historic villas along the shore are absolutely breathtaking. We’ll be stopping in Bellagio, the jewel of Lake Como, and seeing some of the incredible villas that line the lakeside. Whether you’re admiring the luxurious villas from the boat or visiting them in person, it’s a peaceful, scenic experience you won’t forget.
Where to Stay in Lake Como
We’re staying at Il Sereno, a chic and intimate hotel right on the lake. It’s a place that feels both modern and welcoming, with incredible views, a sleek design, and a serene atmosphere that makes it easy to relax after a day of exploring. Its small size adds to the charm and gives you that special, almost private feeling.
For other stunning options, you can’t go wrong with Grand Hotel Tremezzo, known for its luxury and unbeatable location. It has that classic, old-world charm while offering top-notch service and amenities.
Villa d’Este is another iconic choice, offering a historic vibe with lush gardens and a grand atmosphere. Both are perfect for anyone looking to splurge on a memorable lakeside stay.
10. Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany in September is straight out of a postcard. It’s grape harvest season, so the vineyards are buzzing with activity and the countryside is full of warm colors. You get that crisp, early-fall feeling while still enjoying long sunny days and cool evenings. It’s the kind of trip where you’ll want to slow down and soak in every view. We’re going this September and I can not wait – here are our plans!!
I recommend picking one base and doing day trips from there. Whether it’s the rolling hills of Chianti, the cobblestone charm of Siena, or even the Renaissance art of Florence, everything is within reach by car. You can spend the morning exploring a hilltop town, then come back in time for an aperitivo on a quiet terrace.
Some of the best things to do in Tuscany this time of year are simple and special. Go wine tasting at family-run vineyards, take a bike ride through the countryside, or join a cooking class in a local kitchen and learn how to make pasta from scratch. These kinds of experiences give you a real feel for the region and its slow, soulful rhythm.
Where to Stay in Tuscany
Stay somewhere that feels like a retreat. Castello di Casole, Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, and Borgo Pignano are all stunning luxury options. Think vineyard views, long lunches under olive trees, and cozy rooms that feel like a dream after a day of wandering.
If you are looking for a villa for a group, here is the one we stayed in and recommend. It was right on a vineyard with incredible views, but close enough to visit all the hilltop towns!
These spots offer the kind of relaxed luxury that makes it hard to leave the property at all—and honestly, you won’t want to.
September is also a great time for local food festivals and wine tastings. The pace is slower than summer, but there’s still so much going on, and you’ll feel like you’re catching Tuscany at its best.
11. Spain

Spain is a fantastic place to visit in September, especially if you want to combine a city adventure with a relaxing beach getaway. You can tell by now that I looove traveling to Europe in September and Spain is a great example of why. You can still enjoy summer weather, but you’re past the peak of the season, which means fewer crowds, less intense heat, and often much better value!
We’re heading to Spain this September as a family with our almost 3 year old and 7 month old, visiting both Madrid and Mallorca and I’m excited to experience the two sides of the country. Madrid will still be quite hot for sightseeing, so we plan to explore earlier in the day, take breaks in the afternoon, and lean into the city’s incredible food and culture. Then, we will head to Mallorca for a slower few days by the sea. You could also pair Mallorca with Barcelona, but we chose Madrid because the flights worked best for us and it’s a bit less touristy.
Mallorca will be just about perfect in September. The water has had all summer to warm up, the weather is ideal for beach days, and you avoid the intense heat, crowds, and peak summer pricing. We’re planning to take a boat cruise along the coast, explore charming towns like Deià, Palma, and Sóller, swim in crystal clear water, and spend some time hiking in between enjoying a few relaxing beach days.
And if you have more time, you could easily add another Balearic Island to your Spain itinerary. Menorca would be a great choice for a quieter island experience, while Formentera is perfect if your priority is beautiful beaches and turquoise water.
I’m also very excited about the food. Mallorca has an incredible culinary scene, and restaurants like Ca’s Patró March and El Olivo are high on my list, along with exploring the growing foodie scene in Palma. Spain is one of those destinations where I would build the itinerary around both the experiences and the meals.
Where to Stay in Spain
In Madrid, we’re staying at The Brach Madrid, a super chic hotel in a great location with accommodations that work especially well for young families while still feeling luxurious. I love finding hotels that don’t make you sacrifice design and a special experience just because you’re traveling with kids.
In Mallorca, we’re splitting our stay between La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel in Deià and Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor. Both have been on my bucket list for years, so naturally I had to experience both! They offer two very different takes on luxury Mallorca and will make a fun way to experience different parts of the island to share with my clients and all of you!
If you’re looking for a September getaway that combines incredible food, culture, charming towns, and beautiful beaches, Spain is definitely one I’d have on your list!
12. Vermont, USA

If you’re dreaming of crisp air, cozy sweaters, and colorful leaves, September in Vermont is pure magic. It’s one of the best places in the U.S. to catch the first signs of fall, and it’s exactly where I’d go for a dreamy, early autumn escape.
Stowe is the perfect base for your trip. It has that postcard charm, with scenic drives, charming cafés, and just the right amount of mountain town energy. It’s also full of fun fall activities that are ideal for couples or families.
You can take the gondola up Mount Mansfield for stunning views of the valleys and changing leaves. Visit the Ben & Jerry’s Factory for a scoop (or two) or stop by Cold Hollow Cider Mill for warm cider donuts and fresh apple cider. Walking along Main Street in Stowe is like stepping into a storybook, and the nearby trails and parks are perfect for easy hikes through glowing fall foliage.

13. South Africa

September is springtime in the Southern Hemisphere, which makes it one of the best times to visit South Africa. The weather is mild, wildflowers are in bloom, and it’s prime season for whale watching and safaris.
Start in Cape Town, one of the most stunning cities in the world. Hike or take the cable car up Table Mountain for unreal views, stroll through Kirstenbosch Gardens, and don’t miss the penguins at Boulders Beach—such a fun and unique experience. The food scene is amazing, with everything from waterfront seafood spots to fine dining in the city. If you love wine, head to Stellenbosch or Franschhoek for a day (or two) of wine tasting among the vines.
A South Africa trip wouldn’t be complete without a safari. Kruger National Park is one of the best places to see the Big Five, and September is ideal for game drives with cooler temps and better animal sightings.
Where to Stay in Cape Town
In Cape Town, I recommend:
- Tinswalo Atlantic for an intimate, oceanfront stay just outside the city.
- Ellerman House for classic elegance and incredible views.
- One&Only Cape Town for luxury in the heart of the V&A Waterfront.
- Belmond Mount Nelson for a timeless stay with beautiful gardens and iconic pink charm.
For safari, there are tons of incredible luxury lodges near Kruger that make the experience truly unforgettable.
14. Tanzania

Tanzania is one of the top places to visit in September, especially if you’ve ever dreamed of seeing the Great Migration. This is peak time in Serengeti National Park, when massive herds of wildebeest and zebra make their dramatic river crossings—one of the most incredible wildlife experiences on the planet. I have chills thinking about it!!
This trip is high on my bucket list. I’ve had my eye on the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti for years. The suites come with private plunge pools that overlook the savannah, and guests regularly spot elephants walking by. It looks absolutely surreal. I’d love to spend a full week here soaking it all in.
For the ultimate trip, pair a Serengeti safari with a few days in Zanzibar. It’s a short flight away and gives you that dreamy island escape to relax after all the adventure. Think white sand beaches, turquoise water, and a mix of culture and calm.
Where to Stay in Tanzania
In the Serengeti, the Four Seasons Safari Lodge is a true bucket-list stay. The suites come with private plunge pools overlooking the plains, and it’s not uncommon to see elephants walking by while you sip your morning coffee. The experience is pure luxury in the heart of the wild.
For your island escape, head to &Beyond Mnemba Island in Zanzibar. It’s an exclusive, barefoot-luxury retreat on its own private island. Think castaway vibes with five-star service—perfect for unwinding after safari adventures.
15. Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

If you’re craving a classic New England coastal escape, Martha’s Vineyard in September is a dream. The summer crowds have cleared out, but the charm is still in full swing. You’ll still get plenty of sunny days, mild breezes, and that laid-back beach town energy the island is known for.
Spend your days sailing, biking between towns, or setting up a beach picnic with fresh lobster rolls and rosé. The food scene is incredible here—from cozy cafés to seafood spots with harbor views. It’s the perfect place to slow down and soak up the last bits of summer.
Where to Stay in Martha’s Vineyard
For iconic New England luxury, book a room at the Harbor View Hotel. It’s set right by the lighthouse and offers stunning water views and classic island vibes.
If you’re looking for something a bit more intimate and boutique, check out Faraway Martha’s Vineyard. It’s charming, thoughtfully designed, and feels like your own little coastal retreat.
16. Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor, Maine

September in Acadia National Park is magic. The summer crowds have thinned, the weather is crisp and clear, and you’ll start to catch hints of that famous New England fall foliage. It’s a perfect time for hiking, biking, and scenic drives through one of the most beautiful national parks in the U.S.
Base yourself in Bar Harbor, a charming coastal town just minutes from the park. It’s incredibly walkable, full of great restaurants and shops, and makes day trips into the park super easy. You can hike the Ocean Path, bike along Carriage Roads, or catch the sunrise from the top of Cadillac Mountain.
Where to Stay Near Acadia National Park
In Bar Harbor, you’ll find no shortage of charming and convenient hotels. The Harborside Hotel, Spa & Marina offers beautiful waterfront views and easy access to town. Bar Harbor Inn is another classic stay right on the harbor, while The Bayview Hotel gives you that cozy boutique experience with oceanfront rooms.
