I’ll admit this was a SUPER easy list for me to put together for the best Charleston restaurants. I am from here and live in downtown Charleston and eat out every weekend for almost every meal. It’s safe to say that I am well experienced and have some tried and true faves over my 30+ years here that I’m excited for you to try! I’m also a big foodie and love seeking out the best places to eat in any destination.
Let me start by saying that nowhere in Charleston is locals only or “non-touristy”. Some places and areas are more touristy than others (looking at you, East Bay Street), but there’s pretty much nowhere that visitors have not discovered. And that’s a good thing – we have amazing restaurants thanks to the world renowned chefs that call Charleston home. You will not find anything of “tourist” quality in this list, however – these are best of the best!
Charleston boasts the most award winning chefs with numerous James Beard Award nominees and winners plus Michelin star winners! Our chefs put Charleston on the map reinventing traditional Lowcountry cuisine and adding their own personalities to that.
Here are places that I love to visit regularly in Charleston as a local foodie broken down by regions. Charleston is actually a big area and many amazing restaurants are located outside of the downtown area.

Best Downtown Charleston Restaurants
Charleston, South Carolina is known for its rich history, charming architecture, and delicious food. The city boasts some of the best restaurants in the country, offering a wide range of cuisine, from traditional Southern dishes to seafood and international fare. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, there’s no shortage of places to dine in Charleston.
Here are all the best restaurants in downtown Charleston.
1. Chubby Fish
Address: 252 Coming St, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 5pm-10pm, closed Sunday & Monday
For a seafood centric, coastal town, Chubby Fish is one the best places for fresh, sustainable seafood in downtown Charleston. Tucked into the Elliotborough neighborhood, you’ll love the local vibe and nautical flare.
The menu changes daily, but some of my favorite staples are bibb lettuce, chili garlic shrimp, curry, and crudo or ceviche!
I’ll warn you, it is THE hardest reservation to get in Charleston. Plan to get there at least by 4:00pm to put your name down when they open at 5pm if you want to eat here (especially on weekends). They’ll put you down and tell you what time to come back (they don’t call or text you!).
There are literally people you can pay to stand in line for here (message me if you need the contact).
Head over to Elliotborough Mini Bar or the Seahorse (same owners, right next door) for a cocktail while you wait. It’s honestly part of the experience!
They’ve recently garnered multiple (well deserved) awards from major publications like 50Best, NY Times, and James Beard Foundation.
2. Chez Nous
Most Romantic Restaurant in Downtown Charleston
Address: 6 Payne Ct, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 11:30am-3pm, 5pm-10pm, Closed Monday

Chez Nous means Our House in French and is hands down the most romantic restaurant in Charleston. It’s set in a tiny Charleston single style home that has been renovated into a restaurant.
The menu changes daily, but there are always two apps, two entrees, and two desserts. I have never had a bad meal here even when I was skeptical to try things! Another fun fact: this is where my husband and I had our fist date!
It is a must for any romantic getaway to Charleston!
3. Park and Grove
Best Brunch Restaurant in Charleston
Address: 730 Rutledge Ave, Charleston, SC | Hours: Weekdays 11am-9pm, Saturday 9am-9pm, Sunday 9am-2:30pm

In my opinion, this is the best brunch restaurant in Charleston (downtown) and they are great for dinner as well. Either one you choose, you won’t be disappointed at Park and Grove.
They have the best bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich and to die for cinnamon rolls at breakfast. And for lunch or dinner, I love the farro salad, the citrus salad, and any of their pastas!
Plus, the cocktails are always super creative AND they are super accommodating with several amazing mocktails to choose from.
4. Sorelle Charleston
Best Italian Restaurant in Charleston
Address: 88 Broad St, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 5pm-10pm, Sunday 10am-2pm & 5pm-10pm

Sorelle is the hottest new restaurant to open in recent years Charleston and easily the BEST Italian restaurant in Charleston, SC. From an all star team, Chefs Adam Sobel and Nick Dugan have created a menu featuring Southern Italian cuisine created with the help of fresh, local ingredients.
Go for dinner and be sure to try a few of my favorites: start with the arancini cacio e pepe (essentially fried rice balls with pecorino and pepper), zucchini parmigiana, the Sorelle Spaghetti with crispy zucchini and burrata, and end with the limone dessert which is a citrus cream shaped like a lemon! The pasta here truly rivals the ones I had when visiting Italy.
They also serve breakfast and lunch in the Mercato where you can try their Sicilian style pizzas and paninis. I love to grab a coffee and pastry here then walk around The Battery!
Wondering how to snag a reservation? They open dining room reservations 60 day in advance and you should hop on it quickly! The bar and lounge is first come, first serve so even if you can’t get a reservation you can go early and try to snag a spot at the chic bar.
5. Southbound
Address: 72 Cannon St, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 5pm-9pm (Fri/Sat until 10pm), Closed Monday)

Southbound is one of the newest members of the Charleston foodie scene. The hospitality here is unmatched and is one of the many parts that make it standout.
The hosts greet you on the front porch with the warmest welcome making you feel like you have just arrived to your best friends house for dinner. I went for my birthday this year and they offered us bubbles to celebrate along with a handwritten card for me!
I mentioned the porch – the whole restaurant is set inside a historic Charleston home that has recently been completed renovated. We reserved the “porch swing” which is the most charming and intimate place to sit as the gas lanterns flicker over head. Alternatively, the chefs counter is a great choice to be a part of the action!
The culinary concept is focused around live fire cooking where everything is prepared over open flame which adds the perfect smoky flavor to many of the dishes. It reminds me a bit of Francis Mallmann’s restaurant in Mendoza, Siete Feugos, and his style of cooking.
The menu changes daily with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. We had a grilled soft shell crab which was super unique as you typically see these fried. Additionally, we tried the grilled oysters, wild mushrooms, NC bay scallops, and Mexican street peppers. You can check out the daily menu on their instagram page!
6. The Ordinary
Best Seafood Restaurant in Charleston
Address: 544 King St, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 5pm-10pm, Fri/Sat until 10:30pm, Closed Tuesday

One of my top 5 fave seafood restaurants in Charleston from James Beard Award Winning chef, Mike Lata. The Ordinary is phenomenal, nothing ordinary about it! It is housed in a beautiful old 1920’s bank building with high ceilings and large windows.
They offer many great sharing options so you have to get the oyster sliders and try a mix of small and large plates. If zucchini carpaccio is on the menu, it’s a must try.
We love sitting at the bar or the back raw bar here if it’s just a couple!
They are currently closed on Tuesday and take resy’s 2 weeks in advance.
7. Zero George
Best Tasting Menu in Charleston
Address: 0 George St, Charleston, SC | Daily 5pm-10pm, Closed Monday

The Restaurant at Zero George has been on my list for a looong time and was excited to finally try as we celebrated our wedding anniversary! Zero George is the most charming boutique hotel in Charleston with this incredible intimate and fine dining restaurant right onsite.
The menu features a tasting menu experience designed by Chef Vinson Petrillo. Using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, they have put together an elevated taste of Charleston that is the closest thing to a Michelin star restaurant in the city. Oftentimes, a tasting menu can leave you feeling hungry, but nowhere in Charleston will do that to you and especially not here! I was getting full before we even got to dessert!
You can choose a reservation in their gorgeous dining room that feels like you’ve been invited over to a friends stately Charleston home or on the romantic patio under the stars! We sat inside because it was February, but the patio would have been glorious!
Zero George is a must for foodies, a special occasion, or anyone looking for an upscale night out in Charleston!
8. Leon’s Oyster Shop
Address: 698 King St, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 11am-10pm

You’ve likely heard of Leon’s already and it is truly SO good. Some of my favorite days have involved sipping rosé and eating oysters on their patio on a sunny day. It’s very casual, set inside a former car repair shop with the best food right on King Street!
Here is what we typically order to share: frozen rosé or gin + tonic obviously, fried oyster sandwich (ask for it on a bun – how it was served originally) with cucumber salad, siam salad, raw oysters, hush puppies with honey butter, and soft serve ice cream. People rave about the fried chicken at Leon’s so be sure to try some, too!
9. 167 Raw, 167 Sushi Bar, & Bar 167
Address: 193 King St, Charleston, SC | Hours: 11am-11pm, Closed Sunday (for main 167 Raw restaurant)

You have also probably heard of the super trendy 167 Raw. And it is so good, but you need to get there before 6pm to get on the list and expect to wait 2+ hours. I love the tuna burger, lobster roll and always get the fresh ceviche! Leisurely tip: make a reservation at Bar 167, then go put your name on the list at the main restaurant. Enjoy cocktails and snacks while you wait!
167 Raw was originally located at the raw bar on East Bay Street, then moved to King Street for a bigger space. In the old venue, they opened 167 Sushi Bar! The sister restaurant, 167 Sushi, does take reservations and is the best sushi experience I have ever had.
I recommend sitting at the chef’s counter and letting the server order for you at 167 Sushi! It is an amazing tasting menu type experience. No problem if you don’t love sushi – they have plenty of other options including cripsy fish bao buns and spicy udon noodles. And for dessert, ask for the cheese bread – it’s melt in your mouth milk bread!
10. Vern’s
my absolute favorite restaurant in charleston right now
Address: 41 Bogard St A, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 5pm-10pm, Closed Tuesday

Okay, I almost didn’t want to tell you guys about Vern’s (and it was a while before I updated this post to include it). If you asked me the #1 best restaurant in Charleston right now, it would be Vern’s.
It’s perfect for date night, girls night, business dinners – you name it!
The food is seriously so good and you’ll want to get a few things to share. You HAVE to start with the Charred Sourdough – I promise you that everyone RAVES about how good this bread is. It’s a round loaf that’s a blend of sourdough and pita topped with herbs and it’s incredible.
A few of my other favorite things to order are the raw yellowfin tuna, fresh veggies (sunchokes if they have them!), and I always get a pasta dish. For dessert, if they have the strawberry dessert on there, it’s my favorite. It’s like a strawberry snow cone with creme fraiche and vanilla.
I also loooove the space itself. It looks simple, but you can tell it was designed very intentionally to make you feel comfortable, cozy and adds a sense of romance with the dim lighting and flickering candles. But, it’s not overly fancy by any means – I’ve dressed up for special occasions and seen people dressed super casual so just about anything goes!
It feels like a welcoming neighborhood spot – and that’s exactly what it is. Don’t miss Vern’s!!
11. Sorghum & Salt
Best Vegan Restaurant in Charleston
Address: 186 St Philip St, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 5pm-10pm, Closed Monday

Sorghum & Salt is so underrated in Charleston. The restaurant recently moved from its small building with intimate seating to a brand new space that is beautiful. To me, it feels like you could be in a big city somewhere. There’s a big bar and a bit more space to accommodate more guests.
It is a vegan and vegetarian friendly restaurant in Charleston, but they serve meat dishes as well. They even offer a fully vegan tasting menu!
We ordered the gnocchi with cauliflower and the roasted parsnips with mushrooms and truffle mousse the first time (pictured above.). The most recent time I went, they still had the gnocchi and it’s even better than I remembered!
12. Costa Charleston
Best Coastal Italian Cuisine in Charleston
Address: 320 Broad St Suite 160, Charleston, SC | Hours: 5pm-9:15pm, Closed Sunday

Costa is a new restaurant that opened in Charleston featuring coastal Italian cuisine. Think: what you would find on the Amalfi Coast!
They serve fresh seafood, crudos, pastas, and entrees like pork milanese and prime rib. We loved the pecorino ravioli, tuna, scallop crudo, and green salad. Be sure to try dessert at Costa like the lemon tiramisu that had me dreaming of the Amalfi lemons in Italy.
The interiors are incredibly well designed in this brand new space at The Jasper so you’ll love the overall atmosphere as well.
13. Lowland
Best Southern Food in Charleston
Address: 36 George St, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 5pm-10pm

Lowland is a brand new restaurant in Charleston helmed by James Beard Award winning chef, Jason Stanhope. It’s located at The Pinch Hotel and housed in a historic building that feels like you are stepping into a charming old Charleston home with heart of pine floors and original staircases.
The first floor has a lively bar area called the Tavern Room and the Parlour Room with grand 12 foot ceilings and large windows. Upstairs, you will find the dining room with gorgeous hand painted murals throughout. I thought it was wallpaper at first, but the stunning trees and Spanish moss design was painted by artist Dean Barger.
The design team did an amazing job on this new space, but the menu is what you want to go for! Jason Stanhope carefully curated a Southern style menu with plenty of fresh ingredients and an upscale take on comfort food.
I have been a couple times now so I have some favorites to recommend! You absolutely must try the celery salad with dates and walnuts – it’s so unique, trust me! We also love the yellowfin tuna crudo with a yuzu soy sauce and spicy peanuts atop. And, don’t leave without trying the butterscotch pot de creme for dessert! The flavor felt so nostalgic and comforting.
14. Melfi’s
Address: 721 King St, Charleston, SC | Hours: 5pm-10pm Daily, Fri-Sun 12pm-4pm and 5pm-10pm

Melfi’s is one of our favorite neighborhood spots for Italian food. It’s located on the northern end of King Street in a more residential spot (our neighborhood!) near both Leon’s and Little Jack’s.
Grab a seat at the bar and order a martini to start. My husband loves them here! Then, split a stretch armstrong pizza with fresh basil and mozzarella, followed by one of their homemade pastas. Whatever you do, be sure to order the zucchini frites! They are the best!!
15. Merci
Address: 28 Pitt St, Charleston, SC | Hours: 4pm-10pm, closed Sun, Mon, Tues

Merci is one of my favorite new places to eat in Charleston! I went for my birthday the first time and think it’s perfect for special occasions or celebrations. They were so kind to print a happy birthday note on our menu and served us comp champagne to toast!
The restaurant is very intimate with maybe 6 or so tables plus the chef’s counter. The light is dim at night and the candle light glow feels very romantic making it great for date nights in Charleston.
The food was of course the stand out (as it should be)! The menu is seasonal focused on local ingredients. The strawberries were fresh from John’s Island and of course the seafood was local.
To start, we ordered the snapper crudo and spring pea salad which was almost too pretty to eat! Then, we thad the agnolotti which had lions mane mushrooms and short rib used as a more fine almost garnish on top which was so creative. And for the main event, we shared the seafood poele which has mussels, clams, shrimp and local fish with local rice middlins.
And dessert was my favorite part. We had the banana “pudding” sundae which was basically banana flavored ice cream topped with rum caramel. It was to die for and we should have each ordered our own instead of sharing! Our server said the dish was inspired by the owners young son which could not be sweeter.
Lastly, this is a TOUGH reservation to snag in Charleston. Here is what you need to know: reservations open at 9:30am one week in advance. You need to set an alarm and be ready to book on Resy. They have 3 seatings: 4:15pm, 6:30pm and 8:15pm and you can choose between the dining room or chef’s table (I preferred the dining table, but the chef’s counter could be fun for a couple!).
Definitely do not miss Merci for a special night out in Charleston!
16. Little Jack’s Tavern
Address: 710 King St, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 11:30am – 10pm
Little Jack’s is a quaint neighborhood restaurant with old fashioned diner vibes with their checkered tablecloths and decor – but fancier! We love sitting at the bar or one of the window booths if you can snag one!
Little Jacks is known for having one of the best burgers in town (competition is Edmund’s Oast and Husk Bar IMO!). You also must order a side of perfectly crisped french fries and the brussels sprouts as your starter. I’m also partial to their veggie burger made with butterbeans.
Top Recommended Things to Do in Charleston, SC
17. Edmund’s Original (was Edmund’s Oast)
Address: 1081 Morrison Dr, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 3pm-10pm, Sat/Sun 11am-10pm

Beer lovers won’t want to miss Edmund’s Oast, a craft brewery and restaurant that offers a rotating selection of unique beers. They are famous for their peanut butter & jelly beer so you will definitely want to try that!
Edmund’s Oast has an amazing cocktail program that was nominated for a James Beard Award for best bar southeast. They change up the drink menu quarterly featuring a guest bartender from popular restaurants in other cities! It is super fun to go taste the new creations every season.
Aside from the drinks, Edmund’s Oast is one of my absolute favorite places to eat in Charleston for lunch or dinner with a group of friends. The atmosphere is laid-back and casual, with communal tables and a friendly vibe. I love sitting outside in the inviting courtyard for lunch or grabbing a spot at the inside bar for dinner or dessert.
Make sure to try a few of my favorite dishes: crunchy salad, pickled shrimp, curly fries, fish + greens, curried vegetables, peanut butter jelly beer, and of course dessert.
18. Basic Kitchen
Address: 82 Wentworth St, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 11am-3pm, 5pm-9pm
If you are vegan or plant based, Basic Kitchen is the best place to cater to that, however, they are not a vegan only spot by any means! Everything on the menu is healthier with a focus on fresh, local produce and organic meats.
The basic bowl is my favorite thing and the cauliflower “wings” are amazing! I also really love their veggie burger (called the “good” burger) with a side of sweet potato fries. Be sure to try the beet margarita too. I highly recommend going for lunch!
19. Xiao Bao Biscuit
Address: 224 Rutledge Ave, Charleston, SC | Hours: 11am-10pm, Closed Sunday
If you are looking for a little asian fusion, Xiao Bao Biscuit is my favorite for their okonomiyaki (get egg on top). If the brussels sprouts are in season, definitely get those with a side of sticky rice – it soaks up all the juice that the sprouts are simmered in!
The restaurant is super trendy housed in a former gas station with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The laid-back atmosphere and friendly service make Xiao Bao Biscuit a great spot for a casual night out.
20. Rancho Lewis
Address: 1503 King St, Charleston, SC | Hours: 11am-9pm, Fri/Sat until 10pm

I have been frequenting Rancho Lewis a lot lately. Even getting take-out quite often too. It’s got a lively patio, ample indoor seating, great bar space, and amazing tex-mex food.
You will want to try their cheese dip, get fresh salsas from the salsa bar, and the veggie fajitas – they come with peppers, onion, zucchini, sweet potatoes, and homemade tortillas along with rice & beans. I’m also a big fan of the caesar salad and even some of the kids menu items. The frozen margaritas are a big draw for me too 🤤
This is a great kid friendly spot in Charleston with a good menu and plenty of space for kids to play outside before or after dinner.
21. Lewis Barbecue
Address: 464 N Nassau St, Charleston, SC | Hours: Daily 11am-10pm, Sun/Mon close at 9pm
Lewis Barbecue is the sister restaurant to Rancho Lewis serving Texas style barbecue that you won’t find anywhere else in Charleston. Created by John Lewis with his Texas roots, it’s easily become a favorite bbq restaurant by Charleston locals.
You must try the brisket at Lewis and then load up on sides like my fave corn chili pudding. Lewis is known for their big platters loaded with smoked meats.
They have a great bar area to relax, inside tables, and outdoor picnic tables. I love this spot for an easy night out with a group of friends.
22. Rodney Scott’s
Address: 1011 King St, Charleston, SC | Hours: 11am-9pm
Rodney Scott is now famous for his Charleston barbecue restaurant that began in the small town of Hemingway, South Carolina. He has won James Beard Award for Best Chef Southeast and was featured on an episode of Netflix’s Chefs Table. His South Carolina style for barbecue and pulled pork is to die for and you’ll love the sides they offer – don’t sleep on the mac n’ cheese!
The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating at picnic tables making it ideal for families and groups.
Sullivan’s Island and Mount Pleasant Restaurants
A few of my absolute favorite Charleston restaurants located East of the Cooper on Sullivan’s Island and Mount Pleasant.
1. The Obstinate Daughter
Address: 2063 Middle St, Sullivan’s Island, SC | Hours: 11am-10pm, Fri 11am-1pm, Sat 10am-11pm, Sun 10am-10pm

Located on Sullivan’s Island, Obstinate Daughter is another all time favorite for pasta and one of the top restaurants in Charleston, SC. It is consistently good and I really love the atmosphere.
The short rib gnocchi is to die for and if you are vegetarian, ask for the secret menu veg version of it. Also, make sure to try the farro piccolo and geechie frites – basically fried grits!
We’ve been going for brunch a lot lately because it’s easier to get into than at dinner time. You can usually walk in when they open! Plus, we can let our toddler play on the beach after. Don’t miss the sweet roll if you go for brunch – it’s basically a cinnamon roll with dark chocolate!
Pro tip: pop downstairs for ice cream sandwiches at Beardcat’s after dinner.
2. Post House
Address: 101 Pitt St, Mt Pleasant, SC | Hours: 11am-3pm, 5pm-10pm

Post House has been one of my staple best Charleston restaurants for years and they recently underwent a complete renovation. Located in Mount Pleasan’t popular Old Village, the menu is very diverse with fresh seafood, steaks, curry, and more.
The burger with pimento cheese is my favorite burger in Charleston and recently I have been obsessed with the butterbean burger. Also, don’t miss the blue crab dip!
You will want to make reservations in advance and I highly recommend booking a patio table!
3. Sullivan’s Fish Camp
Address: 2019 Middle St Unit A, Sullivan’s Island, SC | Hours: 12pm-9pm, Fri 12pm-10pm, Sat 11am-10pm, Sun 11am-9pm

I FINALLY tried Sullivan’s Fish Camp and regret not going sooner. It is seriously so good with tons of great options for food and festive cocktails. You can head there after the beach and sit on the patio or reserve a table inside for dinner!
The hush puppies are made with a smoked gouda and are incredible. I had the local fish sandwich which was mahi that day. It comes with a side of chips that are seasoned with old bay. And, my husband had the tuna nachos which were divine – recommend to have it as an app to share!
We forsee many lunches here this summer after a morning spent on the beach.
4. Mex 1 Coastal Cantina
Address: 2205 Middle St, Sullivan’s Island, SC | Hours: 12pm-9pm, Fri/Sat 11am-10pm, Sun 11am-9pm, Monday Closed
Mex1 Coastal Cantina is my go to laid back beach spot. I always come here on a beach day for margs and tacos. I love the cauliflower taco, the bangin’ shrimp, and santos shrimp tacos. The chips here are always fresh, warm, and super light!
5. Philosophia
Address: 909 Houston Northcutt Blvd, Mt Pleasant | Hours: 11:30am-8:30pm
I always love when there is a new Greek option in Charleston. Philosophia is located in the Whole Foods shopping center in Mount Pleasant, but don’t let that deter you. It’s got a great patio and trendy indoor seating too. We loved the spanakopita and fresh fish with veggies. Lately, I have been loving the salmon and the fried zucchini.
You can also get take out here and we order pretty regularly!

North Charleston Restaurants
My #1 go-to restaurants in North Charleston’s Park Circle area.
1. Jackrabbit Filly
Address: 1083 E Montague Ave, North Charleston, SC | Hours: 11am-9pm, Fri/Sat 11pm-9:30pm, Closed Sun-Tues
Located in North Charleston near Park Circle, Jackrabbit Filly is worth the short drive. It is one of the best Chinese fusion meals in a lively setting. I love the local vibe here – it is definitely not a place many tourists find. My favorite things are always the dumplings, any spicy noodles, and fried rice.
2. EVO Pizzeria
Address: 1075 E Montague Ave, North Charleston, SC | Hours: 11am-9pm, Fri/Sat until 10pm, Closed Monday
EVO has been around for years at this point and it is one of the best spots for pizza in Charleston. You will love the wood fired pizzas and plentiful salads made with fresh local produce. Be sure to order from the bakery for tasty desserts and homemade breads.
