Choosing where to stay on the Amalfi Coast depends on several factors. Here are some key considerations to help you decide:
- Season – Summer brings crowds and high prices, while spring and fall offer milder weather and fewer tourists. Winter is the quietest but with limited services. We visited in May, right before peak season and enjoyed better rates and fewer crowds.
- Itinerary – If you plan to visit multiple towns, consider a central base like Amalfi or Sorrento for easier access.
- Car or No Car – Parking is difficult and expensive in most towns. If you rent a car, Sorrento or Praiano may be more convenient. If relying on public transport, Amalfi, Positano, or Sorrento are well-connected.
- Budget – Positano and Capri are among the most expensive, while Praiano and Sorrento offer more budget-friendly options.
- Mobility – If you have trouble with stairs or steep streets, avoid Positano and consider Amalfi, Sorrento, or Ravello instead.
- Travel Style – For luxury, Positano and Capri are top choices. For a quiet retreat, Praiano or Ravello are ideal. For easy sightseeing and dining, Amalfi or Sorrento work well.

Is it better to stay in Positano or Amalfi?
This is a question I get asked often so wanted to address it for you first. Choosing between Positano and Amalfi comes down to what kind of experience you’re looking for.
Positano offers a luxurious, vibrant atmosphere with stunning views, but it can be crowded, especially during peak season. It is ICONIC for a reason!
On the other hand, Amalfi provides a more relaxed, historic vibe with fewer tourists and beautiful streets to explore.
Personally, I chose Amalfi on my first visit for the intimate nature of the Borgo Santandrea hotel, complete with a private beach. I wanted to experience Positano, but preferred to avoid the overwhelming crowds. We were able to see it without having to be surrounded by it constantly!
I do think Positano is iconic and amazing especially if you are staying at a luxury hotel there since you get some space from the crowds. I also think it would be more ideal in the shoulder seasons vs July or August!
Best Towns on the Amalfi Coast to Stay

1. Where to Stay in Amalfi: Best Base for First Timers
The namesake town of the Amalfi Coast is a charming and historic destination, with a beautiful cathedral and plenty of shops and restaurants.
There are also several hotels and B&Bs in the area. Personally, we chose to stay in Amalfi for the incredible Borgo Santandrea Hotel and loved everything about our trip. It’s right on the outside of town and allowed us to escape the crowds and have our own private beach as hotel guests – one of the only hotels on the coast with this amenity!
Amalfi is a historic town that should not be missed during your visit to the Amalfi Coast. It is home to the famous Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Amalfi), a stunning architectural masterpiece that showcases the town’s rich history.

Best for: Honeymooners, luxury travelers, and anyone who wants the iconic Amalfi Coast View
When you think of the Amalfi Coast, you probably picture Positano with pastel buildings stacked up a steep cliff, tumbling down to the beach and sea. It is also one of the most romantic places to stay in Italy, with world class hotels, boutiques selling handmade sandals and resort wear, and a terrace restaurantrs where dinner easily turns into a three hour affair (with a view of course!). Positano is a top destination for honeymooners and luxury travelers for very good reason.
However, I wanted a quieter stay with a private beach which is why we opted against Positano. I think I would like Positano more right at the end of the season in late September, personally.
With its iconic colorful cliffside buildings and stunning beaches, Positano is a must-visit town on the Amalfi Coast either way. Known for its picturesque views and charming atmosphere, Positano offers a unique experience for tourists.
Whether you’re strolling through the narrow streets lined with boutique shops and cafes, relaxing on the sandy beaches, or enjoying a delicious meal overlooking the sea, Positano is hard not to love.
The trade off is the terrain and the crowds. Positano is very vertical so nearly everything involves stairs and is busiest in the summer especially with day trippers.
For the best Positano experience without crowds, pick a hotel with an amazing view and pool, and save the wandering for early morning or evening after the day trippers leave. Or base here in the shoulder season only!

Positano is a dream destination for travelers looking for luxury, romance, and picture-perfect views. While it comes with a high price tag and plenty of stairs, it’s one of the most iconic places to stay on the Amalfi Coast.
3. Where to Stay in Ravello: Best for Quiet and Views
Best for: couples, garden and music lovers and who wants a peaceful view over a beach
Ravello sits high on the hillside above the coast and the view from up there are some of the best in the region! It is famous for the gardens at Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone and for the Ravello festival which brings live music to a stunning setting. Evenings here are calm so it’s a bit opposite of lively Positano!
The trade off here is that Ravello is not on the water. There is no beach so you will have to taxi down to the coast line. It’s a better fit if you have a car and enjoy the slow pace. I would pair Ravello with a stay in a beach town. That way, you get a few nights on the coast and then a peaceful stay in Ravello. It’s at the top on my list for a future trip.

Capri is an island off the Amalfi Coast, about an hour’s boat ride away. While not technically part of the coastline, it’s an absolute must-visit, even if just for a day. The island is known for its dramatic cliffs, stunning views, and crystal-clear waters.

Praiano sits between Positano and Amalfi, which makes it an ideal middle base for seeing both. It has a more local laid back feel with cliffside paths, sea views from many hotels, and a small beach at Marina di Praia. Hotels and restaurants cost much less so it’s a good fit if you want the scenery with out the splurge.
This charming town offers a peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking views of the coast. With its narrow streets and traditional architecture, Praiano provides a more authentic experience of the Amalfi Coast.
Expect quiet evenings, less frequent buses and cars, and plenty of amazing views.

6. Where to Stay in Sorrento: Best Without a Car
Best for: first timers who want convenience, families, travelers without a car and a day trips to Capri and Pompeii.
Sorrent is not technically on the Amalfi Coast. It sits across the peninsula on the Bay of Naples, but it’s a super easy base for exploring the region. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and hotels at a wider range of prices, plus ferry connections to Capri and an easy route to Pompeii.
My friends stayed here with their kids last summer and absolutely loved it. It was perfect to base in Sorrento paired with a longer trip where they later explored Tuscany. They took a pizza making class which they are still raving about and an incredible boat day along the coast. It was easy to reach and they could walk everywhere which made it really nice with kids!
The downside here is the atmosphere is not the same. Sorrento feels more commervial and busier than the cliffside towns, the views are less dramatic and the beaches are small. It is a great practical base, but not postcard Amalfi Coast.

7. Where to Stay in Atrani: Best for quiet local feel
Best For: couples and travelers who want a low key base close to Amalfi
Atrani is one of the smallest villages on the coast, tucked into a narrow gorge just east of Amalfi (about 10 minutes walk away). It’s main square opens onto a small beach and the villages is more like a local neighborhood than a tourist stop. You get the best of both really where you can walk to Amalfi for restaurants, shops, ferries, etc and then come back to a calm quiet evening.
The trade off here is the limited choices. There are few hotels and mostly small boutique guest houses and B&Bs. Definitely not as many luxury options, so book early!

You are really only going to find guest houses in Atrani. I would check on VRBO for Atrani here and read the reviews closely. I would be glad to help you sift through and pick one, but it’s constantly changing so I don’t want to list too many here!
8. Where to Stay in Minori and Maiori: Best for families and beach time
Best for: families, budget friendly stays, and beach lovers who want more space
Minori and Maiori are neighboring towns east of Amalfi and they are noticably more relaxed than the big name towns.
Maiori is known for one of the longest sandy beaches on the coast which is a big plus if you are traveling with little kids!
Minori is smaller and charming, known for its pastries and lemon desserts and for the Roman villa (archeaological site dating back to 1st century). The two towns are connected by a scenic walking route called the path of the lemons so you easily explore them both!
Both towns are flatter than the the cliffside towns which means less stairs and easier walking with strollers or anyone with limited mobility. Prices are lower here too.
The trade off is that there are fewer luxury hotels and less of the dramatic cliffside scenery you see in Positano.

Hotel Santa Caterina
Located in Amalfi, Hotel Santa Caterina is a perfect option for your next vacation. It’s only a few minutes from the main Amalfi town with access to shops and restaurants.
But you don’t even need to leave the hotel with a Michelin star restaurant on site and amazing cliffside area to take a dip and soak up the sun!
Belmond Hotel Caruso, Ravello
You can’t go wrong staying with Belmond anywhere in the world. Their hotel in Ravello, Belmond Hotel Caruso, might be one of their very best – just look at this sunset view!
The infinity pool and unbelievable views of the Amalfi Coast from up above is reason enough to stay here.
La Palma Capri
La Palma Capri is one of the newest hotels in Capri. With only 50 rooms, you’ll love the intimate feel of this hotel. Stay for the coastal vibes, onsite dining, and amazing beachside location.
Il San Pietro di Positano
Il San Pietro di Positano is one of my absolute top, top picks on the Amalfi Coast, and if you’re looking for a true bucket list experience, this is it! This beautiful cliffside hotel sits just outside of Positano, and it’s the kind of place you’ll be talking about for years.
The service is incredible. From the moment you arrive, the staff makes you feel like family, and it’s that warm, personal touch that sets it apart. It’s also a 3 Michelin Key hotel, and every single room has its own terrace with dreamy coastal views.

Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast Without a Car
The Amalfi Coast is stunning, but it’s also spread out, so walking between towns isn’t always practical. If you’re not renting a car, don’t worry—there are plenty of ways to get around, and the coast is well connected by buses and ferries.
However, driving on these winding, cliffside roads can be treacherous, and parking is almost impossible. We chose not to rent a car during our trip for this reason, and I can’t recommend it, especially during peak seasons. I was honestly shocked to see giant tour buses navigating those narrow roads!
Here are a few tips for exploring without a car:
- Accommodation with Shuttle Service: We stayed at Borgo Santandrea in Amalfi, which provided a shuttle service—so convenient! Many hotels offer this service, making it much easier to get around without a car.
- Restaurants Will Pick You Up: At Da Ciccio’s, for example, they picked us up and dropped us back to our hotel. It was a personalized experience that made our dinner even more special!
- Where to Stay:
- Amalfi Town: We stayed in Amalfi, and it was perfect without a car. The town is charming, walkable, and easy to explore on foot.
- Sorrento: Though not technically part of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is well-connected and a great base without a car. You can easily take a ferry or bus to nearby towns.
- Positano: This is one of the highlights of the coast, and it’s great for walking, dining, shopping, and enjoying the beach. Once you’re in Positano, you won’t really need to leave unless you want to.
- Ravello: Ravello is beautiful but not as ideal without a car. It’s a bit more remote, and traveling back and forth from other towns can take time, so it’s better suited to those who have a car or prefer a slower-paced experience.
In short, it’s definitely possible to enjoy the Amalfi Coast without a car just plan your accommodation and transportation accordingly!
Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast FAQ
For most first time visitors, I like Amalfi as the best base. It’s central, walkable, and well connected by bus and ferry so can day trip to Positano, Ravello and Capri without changing hotels. If you want iconic views and a more romantic, luxurious vibe go with Positano. For peace and quiet, choose Ravello.
Positano is more glamorous and picturesque, but it is steep, expensive and VERY crowded in summer! Amalfi is more relaxed, historic and easier to get around. I chose Amalfi on my first trip and visited Positano without having to stay in the busiest area.
Postano is the classic choice with its dramatic views and romantic hotels like Le Sirenuse. Ravello is perfect for a quieter, garden and great views honeymoon. And Amalfi works great if you want a secluded luxury hotel like Borgo Santandrea. Choosing where to stay on the Amalfi Coast can really shape your experience. Positano is known for its colorful cliffside views and lively atmosphere, Ravello offers a quieter stay with beautiful gardens and sweeping coastal views, and Amalfi is a great home base for exploring the surrounding towns. Each has something a little different to offer, so I’d think about what matters most to you, whether that’s a beautiful hotel to come back to each afternoon, easy access to restaurants and shops, or a quieter place to slow down and enjoy the scenery.
If it’s your first visit, I’d also think about how the Amalfi Coast fits into the rest of your Italy itinerary. Pairing it with Rome, Florence, or a few days in the countryside can make for a wonderful trip, but you’ll want to be thoughtful about transportation and how much time you give yourself in each place.
