I am thrilled to share my travel guide and review of staying at The Bürgenstock Hotel Switzerland with you!
The Bürgenstock Hotel and Alpine Spa is easily one of the nicest hotels in Europe and exudes glamour. When it first opened in 1873 it was a magnet for Hollywood stars and the wealthy. It has been visited by Audrey Hepburn, Sofia Loren, and President Jimmy Carter to name a few.
Since it’s grand opening, the Bürgenstock Hotel has recently been renovated in 2017 upgrading it to modern day style. The Resort encompasses four hotels, multiple restaurants, a 110,000sq ft spa, golf course and ample leisure activities to keep you entertained. If you are visiting Switzerland, this is the ultimate luxury hotel suited for any time of year.
Where is the Bürgenstock Resort? How Do I Get There?
The Bürgenstock Resort is located in Switzerland above beautiful Lake Lucerne in the Burgenberg Mountain range. The closest airport is Zurich International Airport at 1.5 hours driving distance or about three hours from Geneva International Airport. You can also hop on the train from anywhere in Switzerland to reach Lucerne in about 2.5 hours on average as it is centrally located in the country. Coming from Lucerne, you can access the resort via boat and the funicular or driving up the mountain.
Personally, we flew into Geneva where we stayed for one night. The next day, we drove to Lucerne making stops in both Bern and Interlaken along the way. We ended our Swiss roadtrip in Zurich and flew out of ZRH.
Accommodations at the Bürgenstock Hotel
Elegant, Modern, Thoughtful, Exclusive, Breathtaking….these are a few words to describe the luxurious rooms and suites at the Bürgenstock Hotel. Each artfully designed room features panoramic views over Lake Lucerne and the Alps, a fireplace split between the living area and plunge jacuzzi, and elegant furnishings.
We stayed in the Lake View Room and the following pictures are of that room type. The Bürgenstock features all types of suites at the 102 room hotel, some with their own massage and sauna rooms and a penthouse if you are traveling with a group or family.
Bürgenstock Hotel Alpine Spa and Pool
The Bürgenstock Hotel Alpine Spa and Pool deserves its own section on the blog. It is one of the nicest (and largest) spas I have ever been to, with Six Senses Zil Pasyon right behind it.
The main feature is the large infinity pool overlooking Lake Lucerne and the Alps. It’s an indoor/outdoor pool available to guests regardless of a spa reservation. You do need to check with the spa staff first though.
Make sure to head downstairs from the pool to check out the sauna (private women’s option available), cold plunge pool at 14°C, and relaxation room. The relaxation room is endless with plenty of options to sit! We spent an hour here reading books next to the floor to ceiling windows!
You’ll also have access to the locker rooms with showers, robes, hair dryers, etc. Everything you need to get ready!
The fitness center is also located near the spa. It is quite spacious with bikes, treadmills, free weights and more.
Things to do at the Bürgenstock Resort Hotel
There is plenty to do at the Bürgenstock Hotel – I could truly spend weeks here! They have indoor tennis, a cinema, paragliding and much more. Whether you seek adventure, luxury, wellness, or culinary experiences, you’ll find it at Burgenstock!
1. Hike to the Hammetschwand Lift
The Hammetschwand Lift first opened in 1905 to carry guests 502 feet up to the summit in under one minute and is the tallest exterior elevator in Europe. You will start your hike right near the hotel and Sharq restaurant. It can be steep at times, but nothing too difficult – I am not a hiker and was mostly fine. You’ll reach the Hammetschwand Lift and can pay a small fee to take it to the top. I suggest a one way ticket and hike down the other side through the cow pastures. At the top, you can stop for a beer and snacks – just remember to bring cash!
2. Bürgenstock Hotel Spa and Pool
Need I say more? Make sure to book a spa appointment and spend some time at this world class spa!
3. Take a drive down to Lucerne to explore
Lucerne is only a 20 minute drive by car or you can take a boat. It is a beautiful town filled with history and interesting, medieval architecture.
4. Play Golf or Tennis at Bürgenstock Hotel Alpine Course
The resort has an indoor tennis facility so you can play year round. If the weather is nice, play a round of golf at the Bürgenstock Resort Alpine Course or hit the driving range.
5. Museum Corridor at Bürgenstock Hotel
The museum corridor will only take a few minutes to walk through, but is a great way to see the history of this grand hotel.
6. Ride the Funicular
You have to take a ride on the funicular before you leave. It dates back to 1893 and is simply a cable car that takes you down to the lake. The views are incredible.
7. Farmer’s Market
If the farmer’s market is going on, you have to take a stroll through to check out local products and produce!
Dining at the Bürgenstock Resort
There is an endless variety of culinary delights at the Bürgenstock Hotel. And don’t worry about dietary restrictions – they’ve got you covered! Dishes from near and far are created across their seven gourmet restaurants. I only wish we had more time to try them all!
1. Spices Kitchen and Terrace
Spices was our favorite dinner spot throughout our time at Burgenstock. Featuring elements from China, Japan, Thailand, and India, Spices curates dishes overflowing with flavor. The atmosphere is vibrant and lively, as the dining space surrounds the open kitchen. We had sushi, red curry, and pad thai. This is a great spot with plenty of vegan/vegetarian options.
2. Oak Grill and Pool Patio
We had lunch here after pool time and it was a very nice, farm to table experience! They started us off with champagne followed by grilled seabass, organic herb salad, and sweet potato fries!
3. Sharq Oriental
Sharq Oriental is the middle eastern style restaurant with mezzes and platter. Expect everything from hummus to falafel and kebab’s!
4. Osteria Alpina
Osteria Alpina was unfortunately not open during our visit. It is an Italian restaurant with the most charming patio overlooking the rolling green hills.
5. Verbena Restaurant and Bar
Verbena Restaurant and Bar is located at the Waldhotel and known for its healthy options with fresh fish and lots of vegetables.
6. Ritz Coffier Restaurant
Rotz Coffier is the French restaurant on property at the Palace Hotel.
7. Taverne 1879 Bürgenstock Resort
Taverne 1879 is located steps from the Bürgenstock Hotel in a charming, Swiss Chalet. It is the most casual as you are welcome to wear your outdoor gear and hiking boots! Enjoy Swiss originals like fondu and rosti.
8. Lakeview Bar and Cigar Lounge
We had drinks and snacks here our first night at the hotel before ordering room service. It is a part of the main hotel right off the lobby, featuring floor to ceiling windows and lounge seating where you can enjoy breathtaking views over Lake Lucerne. If you order room service (like we did) this will be the menu.
Final Thoughts
Arriving at the Bürgenstock Hotel Switzerland, up the winding mountains and approaching the grand entrance, feels sort of like you are arriving at the most luxurious summer camp! Ready to indulge in 5 star accommodations, partake in outdoor activities, and wine and dine every night. If you visit in the winter, I imagine it is a completely different feel while the property is blanketed in white snow. I can only guess that it is the coziest winter spot on the planet in front of the many fireplaces.
I hope you choose to stay at the Bürgenstock hotel and have the absolute best vacation!
