Here are the Best Places to Travel in the USA
1. Charleston, South Carolina

Best time to visit: Spring and Fall offer the best weather for sightseeing. March–May and September–November for warm weather, blooming flowers, and fewer crowds.
When people ask me where to travel in the USA, Charleston is always my first answer. I was born, raised, and still live here — so yes, I’m biased. But readers of Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure have consistently voted Charleston one of the best cities in the US for years. That says a lot!
Charleston is located on the South Carolina coast in the Southeast region of America. It’s one of the original 13 colonies and was founded in 1670 which is more than 100 years before the United States officially became a country in 1776. You feel that history everywhere. Think cobblestone streets, pastel homes along Rainbow Row, and centuries-old churches.
What makes it one of the best places to travel in the USA is the balance. You can tour historic homes in the morning, eat James Beard–worthy shrimp and grits for lunch, and be on the beach by afternoon. Try she-crab soup, fried green tomatoes, and fresh oysters. Walk The Battery at sunset. Take a boat tour to Fort Sumter. Every visit feels layered with culture, coastal beauty, and incredible food.
Charleston works for romantic getaways, girls’ trips, and family vacations which is rare to find in one US destination!
Where to Stay in Charleston
- The Dewberry – Mid-century style, chic cocktail bar, and one of my favorite rooftops in the city!
- Hotel Bennett – Grand, glamorous, and right on King Street for shopping.
- The Charleston Place – Recently renovated, classic luxury in the heart of downtown.
If you’re planning a United States trip and want Southern charm, world-class food, and walkability, Charleston is one of the best of the best in America!
2. Florida

Best time to visit: November–April for sunshine, warm temperatures, and minimal humidity.
If you’re wondering where to travel in the USA for reliable sunshine, Florida is one of the most versatile USA destinations. Located in the Southeast region of America, it’s surrounded by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico which means beaches in almost every direction!!
I’ve traveled all over this state and even lived in Orlando for a short time. I grew up going to Walt Disney World, and later spent weekends fishing with my dad from the Florida Keys to Jupiter to Tampa Bay. Florida has so many layers! It’s theme parks and childhood nostalgia, but it’s also serious sportfishing, polished coastal towns, and tropical luxury.
Palm Beach feels refined and classic. 30A is laid-back and family-friendly. Miami brings Latin culture, nightlife, and incredible food. The Florida Keys offer turquoise water and island energy without leaving the US. Saint Augustine is full of history, culture and charm. I love Boca Grande for gulf coast beaches and laid back luxury.
And the flavors across the state are not to be missed! Make sure to try stone crab claws, key lime pie, Cuban sandwiches, and fresh grouper.
What makes Florida one of the best places to travel in the USA is variety. It might be the one state where there is actually a little something for everyone. You can plan a romantic United States getaway, a multigenerational beach week, or a winter sun escape all in one state.
Where to Stay in Florida
- The Breakers Palm Beach – Iconic oceanfront glamour and old-school American luxury.
- The Pearl Hotel 30A – Boutique charm right in the heart of Rosemary Beach.
- Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club – Elevated, private, and one of my favorite luxury stays in South Florida.
- Little Palm Island Resort & Spa – Adults-only, boat-access paradise that feels far from mainland America.
- The Gasparilla Inn – Family friendly historic hotel with beach club right along the Gulf in Boca Grande.

3. Savannah, Georgia

Best time to visit: March–May for azaleas in bloom and October–November for cooler, quieter weekends. Summers are hot and humid!
Located along the Georgia coast in the Southeast region of America, Savannah feels like stepping back in time. If you love Charleston, you’ll adore Savannah’s moss-draped oak trees, historic squares, and slower pace. It’s one of the most romantic places to travel in the USA, especially for a long weekend United States trip. It can also easily be combined with Charleston for a week long trip!
Savannah was founded in 1733, making it one of the oldest cities in the US. The entire Historic District is walkable, centered around 22 charming squares. I love wandering without a plan popping into boutiques along Broughton Street, stopping for coffee, then heading toward River Street to watch cargo ships roll in along the Savannah River.
There’s depth here too. You can tour historic homes, dive into Civil War history, or book one of the city’s famous ghost tours after dark. For beach time, Tybee Island is just 25 minutes away. When it comes to food, order fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, pralines, and anything featuring fresh Georgia peaches!
What makes Savannah one of the best USA destinations is its atmosphere. It’s intimate, historic, and effortlessly charming. That makes is ideal for couples, girls’ trips, and anyone wanting to experience classic Southern America. I’m biased, but the South is the best 🙂
Where to Stay in Savannah
- Hotel Bardo Savannah – Stylish, design-forward, and perfect for a chic getaway.
- Perry Lane Hotel – Rooftop views, polished interiors, and right in the heart of the Historic District.
>>See all my favorite hotels in Savannah here!
If you’re deciding where to travel in the US for romance and history, Savannah is always a yes.
4. New York

Best time to visit: April–June and September–November for pleasant weather and walkable city days. But Christmas is especially lovely, too!
No list of USA destinations is complete without New York. Located in the Northeast region of the United States, New York City is often the very first stop for international visitors arriving in America and for good reason. Whether you’re planning your first United States trip or your tenth, it always delivers. I’ve been several times, and every visit feels electric and inspiring in a new way.
This is one of the most dynamic places to travel in the USA. You can spend the morning walking through Central Park, the afternoon at The Met, and the evening at a Broadway show. The skyline views from Top of the Rock or a rooftop in Manhattan never get old. Neighborhoods each have their own personality. SoHo for shopping, the West Village for charm, the Upper East Side for classic New York elegance.
The food scene alone makes it one of the best USA destinations. From bagels and pizza to Michelin-starred tasting menus, you can truly eat around the world without leaving the city.
New York represents ambition, culture, diversity, and creativity. It’s fast-paced, iconic, and unforgettable. A must on any United States vacation!
Where to Stay in New York
- The Carlyle – Classic Upper East Side elegance with timeless New York glamour.
- The Plaza Hotel – Iconic luxury overlooking Central Park.
- Pendry Manhattan West – One of my personal favorites for modern luxury and a quieter location.
- Aman New York – Ultra-private, serene, and one of the most exclusive stays in America.

5. Washington, DC

Best time to visit: Late March–April for cherry blossoms and October–November for crisp fall foliage.
For history lovers, Washington, DC is one of the most meaningful places to travel in the US. Located on the East Coast between Maryland and Virginia, DC is the capital of the United States and the heart of American politics and history. I’ve visited a few times, but most recently went in the fall with my husband and toddler, and it completely charmed me all over again!
We stayed at the Rosewood in Georgetown and spent our days wandering cobblestone streets, popping into boutiques, and enjoying incredible meals. Georgetown feels quieter and more intimate, which I love.
That said, staying near the National Mall is incredibly convenient too. It’s so fun to rent bikes and ride between the monuments — from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument — especially in the early morning before it gets busy.
Cherry blossom season around the Tidal Basin is absolutely gorgeous. Fall is just as beautiful, with colorful foliage framing the monuments. You’ll experience world-class (and free) Smithsonian museums, powerful memorials, and a surprisingly strong food scene.
Washington, DC blends culture, history, and walkability in a way few USA destinations can.
Where to Stay in Washington, DC
- Rosewood Washington, D.C. – My favorite in Georgetown for a refined, boutique feel.
- The Jefferson – Classic luxury and historic charm near the White House.
- The Hay-Adams – Iconic views overlooking Lafayette Square.
- The Dupont Circle Hotel – Stylish and centrally located for exploring the city.
If you’re planning a United States trip and want to better understand America’s story, DC should be on your radar!
6. New Orleans, Louisiana

Best time to visit: February–May for festival season and October–December for cooler weather.
New Orleans is one of the most culturally rich USA destinations. Located in the Deep South along the Mississippi River, this city feels unlike anywhere else in America. The French influence is strong, the architecture is colorful, and the music spills into the streets. If you’re wondering where to travel in the USA for unique culture, this is it.
Every time I visit, I’m reminded how layered it is. Start in the French Quarter with beignets at Café du Monde. Walk past wrought-iron balconies, listen to live jazz on Frenchmen Street, and yes, peek at Bourbon Street at least once. It’s lively and chaotic, but part of the story. There’s also plenty of history to dive into like the World War II Museum.
The food scene alone makes this one of the best places to travel in the USA. Order gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish étouffée, and a proper po’ boy. The city blends French, Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences into something distinctly New Orleans.
What makes it notable on any United States itinerary is the unique personality of the city. It’s soulful, celebratory, and deeply rooted in tradition. You can feel it when you visit!
Where to Stay in New Orleans
- Maison Métier – Intimate and romantic with European-inspired design.
- Hotel Saint Vincent – Stylish, vibrant, and full of character.
- Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans – Modern luxury with sweeping Mississippi River views.
BOOK YOUR HOTEL WITH MY VIP PERKS! If you want access to my VIP perks like complimentary upgrades, daily breakfast for two, a $100 resort credit, and early check in/late check out, reach out to me here with your travel dates and I can help book your hotel at no extra cost to you!
7. Asheville, North Carolina

Best time to visit: September–October for peak fall foliage and April–June for wildflowers and mild mountain weather.
Tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina, Asheville is one of the most charming mountain destinations in the US. It’s an easy drive from my hometown, so I’ve been countless times in every season and it never disappoints. If you’re wondering where to travel in the USA for fresh air, scenery, and a slower pace, this is a great choice!
You’ll experience sweeping Blue Ridge views, especially along the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of the most scenic drives in America. Downtown Asheville has an artsy, laid-back vibe with bookstores, coffee shops, and an incredible craft beer scene. Two of my personal favorites are Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. (their expansive brewery campus is so fun to visit) and Wicked Weed Brewing for creative small-batch pours.
One of the highlights of any trip here is touring the iconic Biltmore Estate. Built by George Vanderbilt in the late 1800s, it’s the largest privately owned home in the US. Walking through the house and gardens with the mountains in the background is honestly so cool. Pro tip: do a wine tasting after your tour!
Asheville has outdoor adventure, breweries, and historic charm making it one of the best places to travel in the USA year-round.
Where to Stay in Asheville
- The Omni Grove Park Inn – Famous spa, massive stone fireplaces, and classic mountain views.
- The Restoration Asheville – A boutique stay I love (we have its sister hotel in Charleston!), right in the heart of downtown.
If you’re planning a cozy, scenic US getaway, Asheville is perfect!
8. Nashville, Tennessee
Best time to visit: April–May and September–October for warm weather and major festival energy.
Located in the state of Tennessee in the Southeast region of the United States, Nashville is far more than bachelorette parties. It’s one of the most fun USA destinations for live music, Southern food, and stylish hotels. I love country music, so Nashville has always had a special place in my heart. I’ve always visited with friends, and every single trip has been such a blast.
What makes it one of the best places to travel in the USA is the music culture. You can walk into almost any bar on Broadway and hear genuinely talented musicians even in the middle of the afternoon. It feels authentic, not staged.
You absolutely have to see a show at the legendary Ryman Auditorium, tour the Grand Ole Opry, and visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I once toured with a group and we actually got to sing on stage at the Grand Ole Opry during the tour which was such a fun, core memory.
Beyond music, Nashville’s hot chicken, biscuits, and bourbon tastings make it a strong culinary stop on any United States trip. It’s energetic, social, and ideal for your 20s, couples trips, or a girls’ weekend.
Where to Stay in Nashville
- 1 Hotel Nashville – Nature-inspired luxury with a calm vibe right downtown.
- Thompson Nashville – Sleek, stylish, and perfectly located in The Gulch.
If you’re planning a long weekend and wondering where to travel in the US for music and fun, I can’t recommend Nashville enough!
9. California

Best time to visit: March–May and September–November for mild weather and smaller crowds.
California alone could easily be several United States trips. In fact, there are several trips I want to do here! Located on the West Coast, it’s one of the most diverse USA destinations with dramatic coastal drives to world-class wine country to stunning national parks.
Los Angeles and Hollywood are a must for first-time international visitors, especially since LAX is such a major hub. I personally love Santa Monica and the beach there! Napa is another favorite; I’ve done trips with friends, explored San Francisco, and spent a few days wine-tasting in Napa Valley.
What makes California one of the best places to travel in the USA is variety. You can stroll the Santa Monica Pier, drive along the Big Sur coastline, explore San Diego beaches, hike in Yosemite National Park, or wander Hollywood Boulevard all in one state. The food is incredible too from farm-to-table California cuisine to fresh seafood along the coast.
Where to Stay in California
- The Westin Napa Valley – Classic wine country luxury with easy access to downtown Napa. This is where we stayed on our trip, but there are so many hotels here!
- Regent Santa Monica – Family-friendly, modern, and just steps from the beach — one of my favorite hotels in the USA.
California truly embodies everything people dream about for a United States trip: coastlines, wine, cities, and adventure!
10. Utah

Best time to visit: Spring (April–May) and Fall (September–October) for mild weather; Winter for skiing in Deer Valley.
Utah is one of the most beautiful places in the US for outdoor lovers. Located in the Mountain West region, it’s packed with jaw-dropping scenery: red rock landscapes, towering canyons, and some of the most iconic national parks in America. I love Utah for adventure whether it’s hiking, skiing, or just taking in the otherworldly beauty.
For winter trips, Deer Valley is my go-to ski resort. It’s smaller, ski-only, and perfect for families who want less crowded slopes. I also loved a couples getaway at The Lodge at Blue Sky — a chic retreat on a ranch with a kids’ club that would make it ideal for families in the summer too. For a truly luxurious, almost otherworldly experience, Amangiri is unforgettable.
Beyond these resorts, the national parks are bucket-list worthy: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, and Canyonlands are all within reach. Hiking, biking, and photography opportunities abound. Utah blends adventure, luxury, and some of the most stunning landscapes in the United States.
Where to Stay in Utah
- Amangiri – Remote luxury tucked into red rock canyons; truly one-of-a-kind and on my bucket list!
- The Lodge at Blue Sky – Perfect for couples in winter or families in summer with their kids’ club. We loved staying here on our winter getaway.
- Goldener Hirsch Deer Valley – Cozy, upscale ski-in/ski-out retreat ideal for families. We stayed here and love the Bavarian charm that makes it feel like your in Europe!
If you’re planning a United States trip for adventure or mountain luxury, Utah should be at the very top of your list.
11. Colorado

Best time to visit: December–March for skiing; June–September for hiking and summer mountain adventures.
Colorado is one of the best places to travel in the USA year-round. Nestled in the Rocky Mountains, it offers adventure and stunning scenery. Ski in the winter at world-class resorts or hike and explore in the summer when wildflowers and mountain vistas are at their peak. I’ve loved both experiences. A summer trip to Telluride was unforgettable and skiing at Beaver Creek felt like a total indulgence.
The state’s mountain towns each have their own personality. Aspen is sophisticated and lively, Vail is classic and family-friendly, and Telluride is remote and stunningly scenic. Denver is also a fun city to explore with great dining, craft breweries, and a walkable downtown. I’ve done Denver a couple times and definitely recommend spending a night there when you fly in!
For foodies, try local bison, craft beers, and farm-to-table cuisine. From hiking to skiing to exploring charming mountain towns, Colorado truly delivers the best of the Rockies.
Where to Stay in Colorado
- The Little Nell – Ski-in/ski-out luxury with downtown Aspen just steps away.
- Four Seasons Vail – Classic mountain elegance with spa and slopeside access.
- The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch – Cozy, luxurious, and perfect for winter skiing. We stayed here and it’s amazing with ski in/out access and large spa!
- Madeline Hotel and Residences – Luxury stay in Telluride, ideal for summer or winter.

12. Wyoming

Best time to visit: June–September for accessible trails, wildlife spotting, and warm weather.
Wyoming is pure bucket-list America! If you want iconic Western landscapes, this is where to travel in the US. Located in the Mountain West region, it’s vast, wild, and incredibly scenic.
I’ve been to Cheyenne — which is flat and classic cowboy country — but Yellowstone National Park is truly on my personal bucket list. I can’t wait to take our kids someday. My plan would be to base in Jackson Hole and do day trips to Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Geysers, mountains, wildlife — it’s the stuff adventure dreams are made of.
My dad used to hunt out here and my mom always did ski trips to Jackson Hole when I was little. I loved seeing the old pictures of both of them surrounded by wide-open skies and mountains. It’s been a long time coming for me to get out there!
Home to Yellowstone and Grand Teton, Wyoming is perfect for a nature-focused United States trip. You’ll hike, spot bison, elk, and maybe even a bear, and enjoy some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country. It’s remote, scenic, and the kind of place that makes you realize how beautiful America truly is.
Where to Stay in Wyoming
- Amangani – Desert-meets-mountain luxury with sweeping Teton views. A bucket list hotel of mine!
- Four Seasons Jackson Hole – Classic luxury with ski access and stunning scenery.
- Brush Creek Ranch – Rustic-meets-luxe ranch experience with horseback riding and wildlife.
If you’re planning a United States trip focused on nature, Wyoming is one of the most unforgettable destinations in the States!
13. Austin, Texas
Best time to visit: March–May and September–November for mild weather and festival season.
Texas has so many destinations worth visiting, but Austin is one of my favorites. Located in central Texas, it’s a vibrant, eclectic city that blends live music, food trucks, and stylish boutique hotels. Kind of like Nashville, but with its own Texan twist. I went for a girls’ weekend and fell in love immediately. We spent our days listening to live music, floating on Lake Austin, and eating our weight in amazing Tex-Mex and barbecue.
Austin is one of the most fun places to travel in the USA for a long weekend. You can wander South Congress for shopping, check out murals and local art, and end the evening at one of the city’s countless live music venues. The vibe is energetic making it perfect for friends, couples, or even a first-time United States trip for international visitors.
Where to Stay in Austin
- The Austin Proper Hotel – Sleek, modern luxury with a rooftop pool and central location.
- The Line Austin – One of my favorite boutique brands that is stylish and fun! I’ve stayed at the one in DC.
- Commodore Perry Estate – Luxury, elegance, and boutique charm for a special getaway.
If you’re planning a United States trip for music, food, and a lively city weekend, Austin is always a winner.
14. Arizona

Best time to visit: March–May and September–November for mild desert temperatures and less crowds. Winter in October – April is peak season with the coolest weather.
Arizona is one of the most visually stunning USA destinations. Located in the Southwest, it’s home to dramatic deserts, red rock landscapes, and some of the most unique natural scenery in America. I’ve visited Phoenix, and the contrast of cacti, mesas, and wide-open skies immediately makes you feel like you’re somewhere special.
I’m dying to stay at Enchantment Resort and experience the Mii Amo Spa since it’s widely regarded as one of the best in the US. It would be perfect for a couples trip or girls weekend to hike the nearby trails and relax!
When my kids are older, I also want to finally do the Grand Canyon, which feels like a true American bucket-list experience.
Sedona, Scottsdale, and the Grand Canyon combine desert luxury with wellness, outdoor adventure, and iconic views that are unforgettable.
Arizona is perfect for couples, wellness-focused trips, and families looking to explore nature in a uniquely American way. The luxury resorts, hiking, stargazing, and southwestern cuisine all make it one of the top places to travel in the USA!
Where to Stay in Arizona
- Enchantment Resort – Desert luxury with iconic red rock views and an incredible spa.
- Canyon Ranch – Wellness-focused retreat with hiking, spa treatments, and holistic experiences.
15. Puerto Rico (US Territory)

Best time to visit: December–April for dry, sunny weather.
Puerto Rico is one of the most vibrant USA destinations and a tropical paradise without technically leaving the country. No passport needed for Americans!
Located in the Caribbean, it blends sandy beaches, lush rainforests, and a rich Spanish culture. I’ve visited for San Juan for my bachelorette weekend and the food, music, and colorful streets immediately make you feel like you’ve stepped into a world of sunshine and history.
San Juan is perfect for strolling cobblestone streets, exploring historic forts like Castillo San Felipe del Morro, and enjoying some of the best Puerto Rican cuisine — mofongo, fresh seafood, and rum cocktails are all a must. Outside the city, the El Yunque rainforest and bioluminescent bays make for unforgettable adventure experiences.
Where to Stay in Puerto Rico
- Condado Vanderbilt Hotel – Classic luxury right on the beach with historic elegance and modern touches. We visited their restaurants but stayed at a hotel next door.
- Condado Ocean Club – Stylish, boutique-feel resort with ocean views and a relaxed vibe. This is where our girls group stayed and it was easy to get into Old San Juan, while still having beach access.
- Four Seasons Hotel Puerto Rico – New property with sleek modern design and premium amenities. 1000 percent recommend!
- Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve – Ultimate luxury beachfront escape with private villas and spa.
Tropical beaches, culture, and adventure await in this island territory!

Spring is such a magical time to explore the United States. The weather is warming, flowers are blooming, and crowds are smaller than summer. It’s ideal for the South like Charleston, Savannah, and Florida where the gardens, squares, and beaches feel picture-perfect. National parks also come alive with spring blooms, making places like Utah, Colorado, and Arizona stunning for hiking or scenic drives. Plus, it’s festival season in cities like Austin and New Orleans, so you can combine mild weather with amazing local culture.
