Charleston, SC is one of the best Southern cities for a Christmas getaway in the USA! I grew up here and Christmas is truly one of my favorite times of year in Charleston. Right after Thanksgiving, the city transforms with twinkling lights, festive decor, and that cozy holiday charm are everywhere you turn.
There’s so much to do during a Charleston Christmas vacation. You can stroll through holiday markets, sip seasonal cocktails at themed Christmas bars, watch it “snow” inside The Charleston Place Hotel, or see the incredible light display at James Island County Park.
Whether you’re planning a family Christmas vacation, a romantic Christmas getaway, or a festive trip with friends, Charleston delivers all the holiday magic.
Where to Stay in Charleston for Christmas Trips
Charleston Place is definitely the holiday headquarters in Charleston. They go all out with a Festival of Trees, an iconic train display, and even “snow” falling in Market Street Circle. It’s the heart of the city’s Christmas magic and a must-visit during the season.
I also love The Dewberry at Christmas. I’ve stayed here a few times, and as locals, we always make a point to stop by on Christmas Eve for a glass of champagne in the lounge’s “living room.” The festive tree display and cozy atmosphere make it a perfect spot to soak up holiday cheer.
2. Helen, Georgia
Helen, Georgia is easily one of the best US Christmas towns! This Bavarian-inspired mountain village will transport you straight to a European Christmas market without the long-haul flight. The whole town goes all out for the holidays, with thousands of twinkling lights and a 20-foot Christmas tree at the center of it all.
There’s no shortage of festive fun during a Christmas trip to Helen. You’ll find Christkindlmarkt, a charming holiday parade, a lantern festival, the official lighting of the town, and even a Christmas train. And of course, there are plenty of cozy, German-inspired restaurants to warm up in between events.

For a festive and convenient stay in the heart of town, check out the Helendorf River Inn and Conference Center. I loved staying at The Pendry as it’s the perfect blend of luxury and style with stunning design throughout. The location is great for getting into the heart of the city’s holiday action, and the hotel itself feels like a festive retreat after a busy day of exploring. Definitely a top pick for a Christmas trip to New York.
4. Mexico City, Mexico
My husband and I took a long weekend Christmas trip to Mexico City and it was amazing. We stayed at the Four Seasons, and the hotel went all out with the decor—a massive tree in the courtyard and even an ice skating rink!
Our 4-day itinerary in CDMX included dining at some of the city’s best restaurants like Pujol and soaking up the vibrant culture that makes Mexico so special. You’ll find festive Christmas markets, beautiful lights, and a fun, laid-back holiday vibe. It’s the perfect warmer-weather Christmas getaway. December still gets cool, but jeans and sweaters were all we needed!

5. Deer Valley, Utah (Park City)
Deer Valley is such a charming spot for a winter trip especially at Christmas. We stayed at the Goldener Hirsch and loved every festive detail, from the twinkling holiday decor to the cozy après-ski vibes.
Between skiing during the day and relaxing by the fire at night, it felt like a true winter wonderland. The hotel even had a letter-writing station to Santa for kids, which made it extra special for families. If you’re dreaming of a snowy, storybook-style Christmas vacation, Deer Valley is a great pick.

We stayed at the Goldener Hirsch and loved the cozy, festive atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot for a Christmas trip, with beautiful holiday decor and warm hospitality. Another great option is the Stein Eriksen Lodge, known for its luxury and classic mountain charm. Either hotel will make your Deer Valley getaway feel truly special.
6. Disney World, Florida
You really can’t beat Disney World for a family Christmas trip—they go ALL OUT. The day after Halloween, the parks transform overnight into a full-on winter wonderland, all in the middle of sunny Florida.
There are special holiday parades, festive firework shows, and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. If you have young kids, this is something you have to experience at least once. I went many times as a child and the magic of Disney is truly 10x’d at Christmas.
Pro tip: plan your visit for November or early December to avoid the Christmas week crowds. Once schools let out for winter break, it becomes one of the busiest times of year so go early if you can!

My top pick for a Christmas stay at Disney World is the Grand Floridian. It’s beautifully decorated for the holidays and feels like stepping into a classic Christmas story. Plus, it’s right on the monorail for easy park access, and you can watch the fireworks from the hotel—making it a magical home base after a day in the parks.
7. Québec City, Canada
Québec City is one of the most charming places to spend a Christmas getaway. Imagine skating at D’Youville Park surrounded by historic stone buildings, wandering through the German Christmas Market, and warming up with rich hot chocolate while admiring the festive storefronts. The whole city feels like a cozy holiday village straight out of a storybook.

Copenhagen is a dream for a cozy, romantic Christmas getaway. The city feels straight out of a fairytale in December, with (potential) snow-dusted streets, twinkling lights, and charming Christmas markets around every corner.
I’ve been to Copenhagen many times and absolutely love it, but I’m dying to go during the holidays. Even though it’ll be cold, I know the festive charm will be worth it.
Picture strolling through the historic Tivoli Gardens, which transforms into a magical winter wonderland with rides, mulled wine, and classic Danish holiday decor. Grab a warm drink from a market stall, browse for handmade gifts, and soak up the Scandinavian Christmas spirit. It’s one of the most magical cities in Europe this time of year.
Where to Stay in Copenhagen
I highly recommend Hotel Sanders. It’s a romantic boutique hotel that feels super cozy and hygge, perfect for the season. It’s tucked away on a quiet street but still just steps from Nyhavn and the city’s main sights. The warm design, incredible breakfast, and welcoming vibe make it a perfect place to come back to after a day of exploring.
9. Munich, Germany
If you’re dreaming of a traditional European Christmas, Munich is the perfect place to go. The city is home to some of the most iconic Christmas markets in the world, with twinkling lights, the smell of roasted nuts and mulled wine in the air, and festive music filling the streets.
You’ll find markets in nearly every neighborhood, but don’t miss the main Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz which is pure holiday magic. Between the food stalls, handmade gifts, and centuries-old traditions, it’s the kind of Christmas trip you’ll never forget. Add in a few day trips to nearby Bavarian towns, and you’ve got yourself a full-on winter wonderland experience.

Rosewood Munich is my top hotel pick. I stayed here with my family during a summer trip, and it was the perfect location—quiet and peaceful, but just steps from the main streets and all the action. I’ve always dreamed of visiting Paris at Christmas. The sparkle of the Eiffel Tower paired with the holiday spirit around town sounds absolutely magical. Paris is already beautiful, but during the holidays, it truly shines.
Imagine strolling down the Champs-Élysées with lights twinkling overhead, browsing festive window displays, and doing a little holiday shopping in some of the most elegant boutiques in the world. From cozy cafés to Christmas markets tucked into charming neighborhoods, it’s the perfect destination for a romantic Christmas getaway or a festive winter trip with friends.

For a truly magical holiday stay, The Ritz Paris is hard to beat. It’s iconic, festive, and full of old-world charm especially this time of year. The holiday decor is stunning, the location is ideal for shopping and sightseeing, and the experience feels straight out of a Christmas movie. Seriously, just google ‘Ritz Paris at Christmas’ and you’ll see!!
11. Zurich, Switzerland
Zurich is one of the most picturesque places to visit during the holidays. With its snow-dusted rooftops, cozy Christmas markets, and beautiful old town streets, it’s everything you’d want in a winter escape.
I haven’t been to Zurich at Christmas yet, but I can only imagine how magical it must be. When I visited, I stayed at Hotel Storchen along the Limmat River, and it was absolutely lovely. The location is peaceful but still right in the heart of the city—perfect for wandering and exploring.
During the holidays, Zurich comes alive with festive charm. From the market inside the main train station—complete with a massive Swarovski crystal tree—to sipping glühwein along cobblestone streets, it’s a dreamy Christmas getaway I’d love to experience.

Where to Stay in Zurich for a Christmas Getaway
Hotel Storchen is my top pick. Even outside of the holiday season, it felt like a cozy retreat with beautiful views, incredible service, and a location that puts you close to everything. I can only imagine how special it would feel during Christmastime.

Vienna is one of the most elegant Christmas destinations in Europe. The city feels like it was made for the holidays, with grand architecture, glittering lights, and some of the oldest—and most beautiful—Christmas markets in the world.
Wander through the Christmas market at Schönbrunn Palace, sip mulled wine in front of the Rathaus (city hall), and listen to live classical music as snow gently falls around you. The whole city feels like a storybook come to life. If you’re looking for a refined, festive Christmas trip with incredible food, culture, and charm, Vienna should be high on your list.

London is at the top of my list for a future Christmas trip. I mean, have you seen Love Actually?? It’s an easy flight from the US and looks absolutely magical during the holidays. The city goes all out with festive lights, decorated storefronts, and Christmas cheer in every neighborhood.
From what I’ve researched (and pinned endlessly!), I’d head straight to see the Christmas lights on Carnaby Street and Regent Street, the massive tree at Covent Garden, and go ice skating at classic spots like Somerset House or the Natural History Museum. I’ve also heard that Daphne’s London is one of the most festive restaurants in the city—perfect for a cozy holiday dinner or celebratory drink.

For a midrange stay, The Hoxton and Kimpton Fitzroy are both highly recommended for their style, comfort, and central locations. I’m a big fan of The Hoxton brand and have stayed with them in other cities!
If you’re looking for something more luxurious, Rosewood London and Claridge’s are known for their stunning holiday decor and timeless London elegance. They’re both at the top of my wishlist for a future Christmas stay!

If you simply can’t decide where to go for Christmas in Europe, consider a river cruise on the Danube. It stops at all the best holiday markets along the way, so you get to experience a variety of festive cities without the hassle of packing and unpacking!!
I’m not usually a cruise girly, but I am a Christmas lover so this is one trip I would love to do someday. There’s something so special about floating down the river surrounded by twinkling lights, cozy towns, and holiday cheer everywhere you go. It’s an easy, magical way to soak up the Christmas spirit across Europe.
