If you’re planning a trip to the breathtaking Amalfi Coast, it’s important to be prepared. From navigating the winding roads to finding the best beaches and restaurants, these essential tips will ensure you have an unforgettable experience on this stunning Italian coastline.
1. Prepare for Motion Sickness – So Many Narrow and Winding Roads
One important thing to know before you go to the Amalfi Coast is that the roads can be narrow and winding. The coastal roads are known for their hairpin turns and steep cliffs, so it’s important to be prepared for this type of driving as it may make you sick. I was surprised to see so many large tour buses navigating these roads – I would never suggest driving. Plan to hire a driver!
If you are renting a car, make sure you’re comfortable driving in these conditions and take it slow. Alternatively, you can also opt for public transportation or hire a driver to navigate the roads for you. By being aware of the road conditions and taking necessary precautions, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable journey along the Amalfi Coast.
Leisurely Tip: Take dramamine or bring a motion sickness patch. The best thing to do is keep your eyes focused on the horizon to manage motion sickness.
2. Be Prepared for Crowds – Tons of Tourists (specifically, Americans)
The Amalfi Coast is a popular tourist destination, especially during the peak summer months. Be prepared for large crowds, especially in popular towns like Positano and Amalfi. To avoid the biggest crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring or fall. You will find better rates, but still comfortable weather during May or September.
If you do visit during the summer, try to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the busiest times. Additionally, be patient and prepared for longer wait times at popular attractions and restaurants. By being aware of the crowds and planning accordingly, you can still have a wonderful experience exploring the Amalfi Coast.
3. Lemon Everything
I had no idea how big of a deal Amalfi lemons were before my trip. They are everywhere from the clothing, desserts, and of course limoncello. Be sure to try them and bring home a little bottle of jam or limoncello as a fun souvenir!
4. Small, but Spread Out
The region is not very big, but very spread out making it feel like it’s not so close together. It’s much quicker to get around via boat than by car. For example, Amalfi town is about an hour from Positano by car, but only about a 30 minute boat ride! This is due to the slow, winding roads and traffic conditions between the towns. It’s important you know how long driving will take if you plan to visit multiple towns or make dinner reservations.
5. The Best Way to Get to Amalfi Coast
The best way to get to the Amalfi Coast depends on your preference. Here are my thoughts on driving the whole way vs using a boat transfer.
First Option: Driving. The best way to reach the Amalfi Coast is to fly into Naples. From there, it is a 90 minute drive to the coast. The distance is not that far, however, the winding roads of the coast plus traffic make this a solid drive. I recommend splurging for a private transfer as this will be a long journey especially if you are arriving on an international flight!
If coming from Rome, it’s a 3 hour+ drive and can be quite costly. I suggest taking the high speed train if traveling from Rome and you can read about it below.
Second Option: Ferry/Boat. Secondly, you could take the train or drive into Salerno, then FERRY to your hotel/specific town. If you get carsick easily, this might be a good idea. It sounded like a lot of trouble, but I think would be my preferred method next time to avoid the winding roads. There is a public ferry or you could hire a private boat transfer.
Leisurely tip: We booked with Cammartota Travel company for our arrival transportation and had the hotel arrange departure – they ended up costing about the same.
6. Very Expensive – Visit in Shoulder Season to Save
The Amalfi Coast is a popular tourist destination, so it’s important to choose the right time to visit to avoid crowds and high prices. The best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and fall (September to October), when the weather is still pleasant but the crowds are smaller. Avoid visiting in the peak summer months of July and August, as the beaches and towns can be overcrowded. Additionally, consider visiting during weekdays rather than weekends to further avoid crowds.
7. Steep Cliffside Means Wear Comfortable Shoes!
When visiting the Amalfi Coast, it’s important to pack comfortable shoes and clothing. The region is known for its steep and narrow streets, so you’ll be doing a lot of walking and climbing stairs. Opt for comfortable shoes with good grip to navigate the cobblestone streets and steep hills. Additionally, pack lightweight and breathable clothing, especially during the summer months when temperatures can soar. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. It’s also a good idea to have a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings. By packing comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your time exploring the beautiful Amalfi Coast.
8. Don’t Rent a Car
When visiting the Amalfi Coast, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to rent a car or rely on public/private transportation. Both options have their pros and cons, so it’s important to consider your preferences and travel style. Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and visit more remote areas that may not be easily accessible by public transportation. However, driving along the narrow, winding coastal roads can be challenging, especially for those not used to the local driving style.
On the other hand, using public transportation, such as buses and ferries, can be a more convenient and stress-free option. The Amalfi Coast has a well-connected transportation network, making it easy to get from one town to another. Additionally, parking can be limited and expensive in some areas, so using public transportation can save you the hassle of finding parking spaces. Even better, you can hire a private driver. Ultimately, the choice between renting a car or using public transportation depends on your comfort level, budget, and the type of experience you want to have on the Amalfi Coast.
9. Plan your Itinerary in Advance
Planning your itinerary in advance is crucial when visiting the Amalfi Coast. With so many beautiful towns and attractions to explore, it’s important to have a clear plan of what you want to see and do. Research the different towns along the coast and decide which ones you want to visit. Make a list of the top attractions and landmarks you don’t want to miss. Consider how much time you have and how long you want to spend in each location. By planning ahead, you can make the most of your time and ensure you don’t miss out on any must-see sights.
In addition, restaurants book up very quickly. Decided where you want to go, look up their booking policies, and be prepared to reserve when they open reservations. I would have a plan 60 days in advance so you can snag the tables you really want! I only booked my trip 6 weeks in advance so missed several places by the time I researched restaurants.
10. Try the Local Cuisine
One of the highlights of visiting the Amalfi Coast is indulging in the delicious local cuisine. From fresh seafood to homemade pasta, the region is known for its mouthwatering dishes. Be sure to try the famous lemon-infused dishes, such as lemon risotto or lemon sorbet. Seafood lovers will also be in heaven, with an abundance of fresh fish and shellfish options available. Don’t forget to pair your meal with a glass of local wine or limoncello for the ultimate dining experience. Exploring the local cuisine is a must-do when visiting the Amalfi Coast, so be sure to come hungry and ready to savor the flavors of this beautiful region.
11. Visit the charming towns of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello
When visiting the Amalfi Coast, be sure to explore the charming towns of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. Positano is known for its colorful cliffside buildings and stunning beaches. Take a stroll through the narrow streets, browse the boutique shops, and enjoy a meal at one of the many seaside restaurants. Amalfi, the largest town on the coast, is home to the beautiful Amalfi Cathedral and offers a mix of history, culture, and stunning coastal views. Ravello, perched high above the coast, is known for its beautiful gardens and panoramic views. Don’t miss the chance to visit these picturesque towns and immerse yourself in the beauty of the Amalfi Coast.
