What to Know About Seychelles
When I first stumbled across photos of the granite boulders on La Digue at Anse Source d’Argent, I was sold on visiting Seychelles, this place I had never heard of, for my honeymoon. Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands located off the eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. It is located approximately 930 miles east of mainland Africa, closest to Madagascar. Talk about exclusive!
These remote islands are quite literally Heaven on Earth. If you aren’t familiar with Seychelles, you have likely heard of the Maldives and it is close, but quite different. Seychelles is home to nature reserves, coral reefs, the rare aldabra tortoises and the coco de mer. It is an amazing place for adventure or simply lounging at the beach, which makes it a great honeymoon destination able to please any type of traveler. And, Prince William and Kate chose Seychelles for their month-long honeymoon so you know it’s overflowing with luxuries!
Seychelles (pronounced say-shells) was originally claimed by the French in 1756 before later becoming an English colony. Finally, in 1976 Seychelles became an independent republic. Since most of the Seychellois are immigrants, the creole culture is rich with influences from Africa, Europe, India and France. You will see this reflected from the architecture to cuisine to language.
Basic Travel Info:
🔌 Electrical: 240 volt, type G plug with 3 rectangular pins in a triangle shape.
🗣 Language: Creole, English, French
💵 Currency: Seychelloise Rupee (SCR)
⛪️ Religion: Christianity is the largest religion in the Seychelles with most of the population Roman Catholic.
🇸🇨 Safety: Saftey is not usually a concern in the Seychelles. As always, be aware of your surroundings.
How to Get to Seychelles: Seychelles Airport
Seychelles is literally on the other side of the world from the US so it’s going to take some patience to get there. The main airport is located on the main island of Mahe and is called Seychelles International Airport or SEZ. There are flights from major hubs like Dubai, Paris, Tel Aviv, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Zurich, Istanbul, and more!
Flights from the USA tend to connect in Dubai so plan to spend some time there too! We booked our flight from the US to Dubai and then booked the final leg via Air Seychelles. Once on the island, you can ferry to Praslin and La Digue or take the small Air Seychelles planes to Praslin. Many hotels also offer a helicopter to SEZ if you are willing to splurge.
We spent one night at the airport hotel at Dubai International Airport on the way there and 3 nights in Dubai on the backend! The flight from Dubai to Seychelles is only 4.5 hours!
How to Get Around in the Seychelles
The Seychelles are an archipelago of over 100 islands! It is surprisingly easy to get around though. The three main islands – Praslin, Mahe, and La Digue offer a high speed ferry system or a quick flight via Air Seychelles. Many respors offer a helicopter service, but that can be an added expense to an already costly destination.
Seychelles Weather & Best Time to Visit Seychelles
As a tropical island, there is truly no bad time to visit the Seychelles. Being near the equator, they experience a warm climate year round with average temperatures in the 78-90F range (or 26-32C). My best advice is to visit when it works best for you! But, here is everything you need to know about the weather patterns.
Given its tropical location, they do receive a lot of rain, generally in short bursts in the morning or evening. This was true for my experience there. The wettest months are December, January and February and driest are June, July, and August.
The hottest months are typically April and November with temps reaching 31C or 90F. This is due to the the trade winds. During May through September the winds blow from south to east, while from December to March they blow north to west. This makes the transitional months of April and November feel much warmer.
I visited during April and the weather was perfect. Warm, with a light breeze and short rainfall during the morning and/or evening. I would not worry about a rainy season – it does not mean it rains all the time!
Where to Stay in Seychelles Islands for a Honeymoon
There are three main islands: Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue. Pronounced ma-hey, praah-lynn, and la-deeg (hope that helps!).
Mahé Island
Mahé is the largest island, home to the capital, Victoria, known for its’ creole architecture, local market, and clock tower. This island will be the first stop on your Seychelles honeymoon launching you to the other islands. The main airport is located here and is called Seychelles International Airport or airport code SEZ.
Praslin Island
Praslin is the second largest island known for the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve, which some think to be the Garden of Eden. It is essentially a palm tree forest featuring all 6 endemic palm species of Seychelles in one place. Vallée de Mai is home to the coco der mer which produces the largest seed in the plant kingdom. And let me tell you these trees are quite massive, reaching heights of 50 meters. Praslin is also known for one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Anse Lazio. The sunsets are UNREAL!
La Digue Island
La Digue is one of my favorite islands due to the small island vibe and no cars! Yes, really – everyone gets around by bike except for a few work trucks. La Digue is home to Anse Source d’Argent, THE most beautiful beach in the world for its renowned granite formations. It’s a great island for beach hopping and seeing the Aldabra tortoises up close.
How to choose a hotel in the Seychelles
Picking a hotel is the most important part! You will be confined to one island at a time so it’s best to decide where you want to be located. It totally depends on what you want to do while on the islands, too!
If you want to save costs it is best to stay on Mahé where there are many airbnbs and cost-effective hotels. You’ll also pay less in transportation between islands. Mahé offers plenty of activity from national parks, to distilleries, to restaurants, to beaches and reefs!
If you want to bounce around and try a couple resorts, I would pick one on Mahe and one on Praslin. Or if you want to be super remote choose a hotel on its own private island!
Best Seychelles Resorts and Hotels
Six Senses Seychelles Zil Pasyon – Félicité Island
Six Senses Zil Pasyon is the ultimate in luxury beach resorts and perfect for your Seychelles honeymoon. It is the sole resort on the private island of Félicité, blending seamlessly with the abundant, unspoiled landscape. Six Senses describes it perfectly (as they seem to do everything with utmost perfection): “Coral-fringed beaches and massive granite rocks create an air of drama and beauty in this haven of perpetual summer.” Sign me up for perpetual summers! When I think of my favorite hotel experiences in the world, this is at the top!
My Experience at Six Senses Seychelles: Quick Hotel Review
We arrived at Six Senses Zil Pasyon for our honeymoon shortly after they reopened the islands to Americans following COVID. We were picked up from Praslin via their private ferry and pulled up to the dock to find their General Manager, Assistant GM, and our personal Guest Experience Manager awaiting our arrival. They chauffeured us via golf cart to our secluded villa for check-in and welcome champagne! The first impression set the bar that the whole team continued to exceed throughout our stay. The entire staff was lovely and personable – we talked with everyone from housekeeping to the farmers at the organic garden.
The rooms are absolutely exquisite featuring a massive deck with a large infinity pool. There is not a single thing the design team left on the table – they even installed under bed lights in case you need to get up in the middle of the night!
We loved staying on this private island because it felt like we were the only people there. They have an amazing spa, private white sandy beaches, snorkeling, kayaking, private infinity pools, incredible restaurants, and more. We spent lots of time drinking rose in our pool, reading books, walking around the island, and loved kayaking to a nearby tiny island. Although you are on your own island, it is about a 10 minute ferry to La Digue where you can spend a day biking to the different beaches.
Check out my full review of staying at Six Senses Zil Pasyon and video!
Four Seasons Resort Seychelles – Mahé
Four Seasons Resort Seychelles was our first choice when we originally booked our honeymoon (which was cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic). When it came time to rebook, we switched up plans after finding a good rate at Six Senses Zil Pasyon and did not stay on Mahé at all. Although we did not stay here, I still follow them on Instagram and know it is an amazing property! I mean it is a Four Seasons, duh! Four Seasons Seychelles is on a more secluded side of the island (read: non touristy) along Petite Anse with luxury villas, fine dining, and world class spa! This place looks AMAZING!
Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island
Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island is a true hidden gem located on your own private paradise at Desroches Island about an hour flight from SEZ. It is the definition of peace and tranquility and the perfect romantic hotel for your Seychelles honeymoon. If you came to relax, this is your spot! My favorite part is the Island Conservation Society’s Tortoise Sanctuary where you can get up close and personal with the native Aldabra giant tortoises! And, if you are into diving, Desroches Island is surrounded by FOURTEEN world-class dive spots filled with marine life and underwater caves.
Constance Ephelia – Mahé
Constance Ephelia is conveniently located on the main island of Mahé. It is only 5 minutes from Morne Seychelles National Park. It is a full-service resort hotel with 5 restaurants, 6 bars, 5 pools, and shops! There is also a gym, spa, and sauna, along with activities like racquetball, swimming, and snorkeling. There are rooms for couples or bigger rooms for families with up to 3 bedrooms.
Anantara Maia Seychelles Villas – Mahé
The villas at Anantara are massive with private pools and gazebos for the ultimate in relaxation. The resort is perched up on a cliff so you get breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean below. Definitely book a candlelit dinner on the beach and massage treatments at the spa. Each villa comes with your own butler, too!
Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort and Spa – Silhouette
The main draw at Hilton Seychelles Labriz is the uninhabited private island. The island is only 35 minutes via boat to Seychelles International Airport so it’s remote, but still close. The resort includes a full service spa, 7 restaurants, and various room types with pools and terraces. You can also use or earn Hilton points if you are loyal to the brand!
North Island, A Luxury Collection Resort
An incredible place to stay on your own private island. I love the 11 exclusive villas that make you feel like you have the place all to yourself. It’s a great option if you are going with children because each villa offers 2 bedrooms. Enjoy unspoiled scenery and relaxed private beaches staying at North Island.
Constance Lemuria – Praslin
Constance Lemuria is located on Praslin which is the second largest island. We met a women on our flight from Romania who comes to the island every summer and chooses to stay here. You will get a full resort experience here with 300+ rooms, three pools, 4 restaurants and 5 bars. They also have a spa, tennis courts, and 18 hole golf course.

How long should you stay at each Seychelles Hotel?
I think you should stay as long as you can at each one because you will not want to leave! It was so hard to leave Six Senses Seychelles. I would plan to stay at least 4 nights at each property, but 5-7 would be ideal for any single island.
What to Do on a Seychelles Honeymoon
You will not get bored on a Seychelles honeymoon. You need to love the ocean, but there’s so much to do from exploring the capital city, hiking, fishing, paddle boarding, and tasting the local flavors.
There are so many fun things to do on a Seychelles vacation from hikes to fishing. You could absolutely sit at the beach all day every day, but if you want to be active, here are all the best things to do in the Seychelles.
Visit Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve
Often described as the Garden of Eden, Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve is a 48 acre natural palm forest preserved close to its original state. It is located in the heart of Praslin and is thriving with six species of endemic palms, including the coco de mer. They are seriously the biggest palm trees I have ever seen! It is so majestic. Admission is currently about $26 USD and helps fund conservation efforts.
Hike Morne Seychellois
Morne Seychellois is the highest peak in the Seychelles. If you enjoy hiking, do not miss the chance to summit this National Park for unparalleled views of the dazzling coastline.
Taste Local Rum at Takamaka Distillery
Takamaka Distillery makes the celebrated Takamaka Rum that is created in Seychelles. You can visit them at La Plaine St. Andre to learn about their process and grab lunch. Since we skipped Mahé, I made sure to try cocktails crafted with Takamaka!
Explore the Capital town of Victoria, Mahe
When you need a break from the sun, you must see the capital city of Victoria. It is the smallest city in the world! You will want to stroll through town seeing the local Sir Selwyn Clarke Market, clock tower replica of London’s Big Ben, and the colorful Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar temple.
Admire the Giant Aldabra Tortoises
Curieuse Island is an unspoiled national park known for the giant aldabra tortoises and the only other place to find the coco de mer. You will also be up close in nature to the other flora, fauna, and birds. It is a 20 minute boat ride from Praslin. There are plenty of opportunities to find these creatures around the islands. Some residents have them in their yards!
Seychelles Fishing
Seychelles has a reputation for being one of the best fishing spots in the world for the abundance of exotic fish species. You can book a charter, but if you are a true fisherman, visit one of the remote atolls for an authentic experience. Alphonse looks amazing!
Kayaking
Kayaking to Cocos Island from Six Senses was one of my favorite days! We had the tiny granitic island to ourselves.
Snorkeling in Seychelles
Snorkeling (or scuba diving) is more beautiful than I can put into words. I felt like the little mermaid in the stunning underwater oasis. These Indian Ocean reefs are so abundant with marine life for being in the middle of nowhere.
Beach Hopping on La Digue and Anse Source d’Argent
Beach hopping on La Digue is best done via bike. Six Senses ferried us over and a bike rental company was awaiting our arrival. You will be able to access L’Union Estate which is a colonial vanilla and coconut plantation filled with coconut trees, land tortoises, and the old plantation house. This will allow access to the famed Anse Source d’Argent where you can relax on the beach or rent clear kayaks! A Seychelles honeymoon is not complete without a visit to this captivating beach.
Other beaches to see on La Digue Island:
- Anse aux Cedres
- Grande Anse Beach
- Petite Anse Beach
- Anse Severe
- Anse Réunion
- Anse Pierrot
- Anse Marron
- Anse Song
Where to Eat in Seychelles
Due to covid and the resort nature of the places we stayed, we mostly ate at the hotels. And had lotssss of room service – it’s our honeymoon after all and you simply will not want to leave the villas. I normally love to find where the locals eat, but our hotels truly knocked it out of the park.
Six Senses has their own organic garden where they grow everything they serve! During my Seychelles honeymoon planning I came across some amazing restaurants on the islands. I would definitely explore these places to eat in Seychelles if you have the chance!
- La Scala
- Marie Antoinette
- Zaz at Four Seasons Mahe
- Saffron at Banyan Tree
- La Grande Maison
- Bonbon Plume
- Bikini Bottom Seychelles – beach bar serving smoothie bowls and juices on La Digue
Seychelles is known for its unique, creole style cuisine featuring dishes with ingredients found on the island: local seafood, curry, coconut, plantains, and fresh produce. Be sure to try papaya chutney, grilled breadfruit, bouyan blan, lasoup tek tek (clam soup), kari koko poul curry (coconut chicken curry), and ladob for dessert!

Seychelles Vacation Travel Tips & FAQ
Answering a few top questions!
I personally did not find an appealing hotel in La Digue so we chose to only spend one day there. We saw some great places under construction and very cute “self catering” options while we were biking around.
Make sure you plan to stay at least a week for a Seychelles Vacation. You will not want to leave Seychelles so any visit it too short already!
Climate: Seychelles enjoys a tropical climate where the temperature does not vary much throughout the year, keeping it around 75F to 86F. The water maintains a nice, refreshing 79F temperature year round. There is not a bad time to visit Seychelles. Keep in mind, it is the tropics so short, random rain showers are to be expected.
The official currency is the Seychellois Rupee. Everywhere seemed to take cards, but I would plan to exchange for some rupees for smaller stores and shops.
The main languages spoke in the Seychelles are French, Seychellois Creole, and English. Mostly everyone we encountered spoke English in the Seychelles.
Seychelles uses a type G plug which has three prongs shaped in a triangle pattern. The standard voltage is 240V so you should be able to use your regular electronics like a curling iron just fine. Here is the one you need.
Dubai! Check out my full guide to Dubai where we spent a long weekend after our time in Seychelles.
Safe Travels!
There are so many amazing reasons to plan a Seychelles honeymoon, family trip, or just because getaway. while there are tons of things to see and do, my favorite days were pretty leisurely. The perfect Secyhelles day: room service brunch on the porch, reading at a secluded beach all day, snack and rose in the infinity pool until sunset, then dinner under the stars. How will you enjoy the Seychelles Islands?
