Why Stay at The Shinmonzen Kyoto?
If you’re short on time, here’s why I think staying at The Shinmonzen is worth considering. This is why we chose it and what we loved most about our stay.
✅ Peaceful retreat along the canal. The Shinmonzen sits in one of Kyoto’s most beautiful and peaceful spots. The quiet canal setting instantly felt calming like a hidden oasis in the middle of the city.
✅ Walkable location in charming Gion. We could easily walk to nearby temples, shops, and restaurants. Staying at The Shinmonzen made exploring Gion effortless, and it was so nice to return to such a serene space after a busy day out.
✅ Michelin-star dining on site. Having a Michelin-star restaurant downstairs was such a luxury especially with a baby. We tend to dine at the hotel more often when traveling as a family, and it was wonderful to have easy access to incredible food at any time of day.
✅ Boutique size and family-friendly setup. With only nine rooms, The Shinmonzen feels intimate and personal. One of my favorite parts was being able to put our daughter down for a nap and then enjoy lunch, a coffee, or a cocktail on the terrace. Our baby monitor reached perfectly and our room was just steps away. I wouldn’t do this everywhere, but Japan’s safety and the hotel’s boutique layout made it feel completely comfortable.
✅ Exceptional service. The service at The Shinmonzen was some of the best we’ve ever experienced. The staff goes above and beyond in every way. The Japanese are known for their hospitality, and this stay was a beautiful reminder of that.

Location/Neighborhood

The Shinmonzen is located in Kyoto’s Gion district, right along the peaceful Shirakawa Canal. It’s one of the city’s most picturesque and historic areas, and it truly felt like the perfect home base for exploring Kyoto.
From the hotel, we could walk to nearly everything on our list like temples, restaurants, shops, and local attractions. Even spots that were a bit farther, like Kiyomizu-dera and the Philosopher’s Path, were still enjoyable on foot. The quiet streets and gentle flow of the canal made every stroll feel relaxing.
Sitting on the terrace overlooking the Shirakawa Canal quickly became a highlight of our stay. It’s one of those moments that reminds you to slow down and take it all in – the sound of the water, the greenery, the calm energy of Kyoto.
The Shinmonzen is also tucked within an area known for its artistic heritage. You’ll find galleries, antique shops, and beautifully preserved wooden buildings that reflect Kyoto’s creative and cultural roots. It’s an inspiring neighborhood to wander through, especially if you love design, art, or history.
The only time we needed to get in a car was to visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine and the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. We did both in one day, which made for an easy and scenic outing before returning to our quiet retreat at The Shinmonzen.

Rooms at The Shinmonzen

The rooms at The Shinmonzen are beautifully designed suites that feel both spacious and serene. We stayed in the Take suite, which had a separate living area, large closet, modern bathroom, and a private balcony overlooking the Shirakawa River. It was the perfect setup for our family, offering plenty of room to spread out and relax. You can view our exact room here!
The design and decor are minimalist yet incredibly high-end, blending traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary luxury. You’ll find elegant touches throughout like silk, stone, lacquer, and bamboo which were all thoughtfully incorporated in a way that feels authentic and refined.
Our suite featured two ryokan-style beds that were surprisingly comfortable. They can easily be pushed together if you prefer. A large sliding door separated the bedroom from the living area, which was ideal for traveling with our toddler. Once she was asleep, we could unwind on the balcony or enjoy a quiet evening in the living room without disturbing her.
Every detail was considered, from the Dyson hair dryer and yoga mat to the well-stocked minibar and nightly turndown service. In-room dining was another huge plus for us as parents—it made it easy to enjoy a quiet dinner without having to leave the room.
One of the sweetest touches was the set of pajamas laid out each night at turndown, even a tiny pair for our daughter. At checkout, the staff surprised us with personalized pajama sets embroidered with our initials to take home. It was such a thoughtful gesture and something I’ll always remember about our stay at The Shinmonzen.
If I had to note one thing, after five nights I was ready for a more traditional, plush bed. The futon-style beds were comfortable but a bit firm compared to what I’m used to. Still, the experience and attention to detail more than made up for it.
Dining at The Shinmonzen Kyoto

One of the best parts of staying at The Shinmonzen is the food. Breakfast was always served on the terrace, with a variety of options from pancakes to chia pudding which was my go-to every morning. You can also choose to have breakfast in your room, which we did one morning on our balcony. It was such a lovely, relaxed way to start the day.
We had lunch on the terrace countless times. The menu was excellent, offering both small tasting menu options and a la carte dishes. I highly recommend the crispy sushi if it’s available—crispy rice topped with fresh trout. I honestly had it nearly every day while we were there.
For our first night, we opted for room service dinner. After a long travel day, it was such a treat to relax in our suite and enjoy a high-quality meal without leaving the room.
Jean-Georges at The Shinmonzen

The hotel’s Michelin-star restaurant, Jean-Georges, is an absolute highlight. They serve the terrace breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea, but we dined inside for dinner one night. The tasting menu was incredible—every dish beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. Service was impeccable, as you’d expect, and the experience felt truly special. At the end of the meal, our server even brought over a selection of fine whiskey and poured us each a shot—a perfect touch to close the evening.
Dining is a major reason staying at The Shinmonzen is worth the splurge, whether you’re enjoying a leisurely breakfast, a scenic lunch on the terrace, or a Michelin-starred dinner.
The Service and Staff

The staff at The Shinmonzen was easily my favorite part of our stay. They were genuinely, incredibly kind and warm. I’ve touched on it throughout the post, but it’s worth calling out just how exceptional they were.
From the moment we arrived, they made us feel truly welcome. Every morning at breakfast, they greeted us with big smiles and came over to chat with us and our 18-month-old toddler. You could see how happy they were to see her. It wasn’t just a “toddler-friendly hotel” with a few kid amenities; they genuinely embraced our family and made us feel welcome.
They always had a spot set up for us at breakfast, complete with toddler plates, silverware, and a cup ready to go. They happily made our daughter anything we requested which was usually broccoli and tofu, since the first few days were rough getting her to eat with adjusting to the time change.
One day, we were having coffee on the terrace and it was a bit chilly. Completely unsolicited, they brought me this chic fleece blanket wrap that was so cozy! (pictured above)
Honestly, I could go on and on about their kindness and attentiveness. It’s the kind of service that turns a great stay into an unforgettable one, and it’s one of the biggest reasons staying at The Shinmonzen felt so special.

Activities
Staying at The Shinmonzen makes it easy to experience the best of Kyoto. The hotel can help arrange unique activities like visits to tea houses, rickshaw tours, and temple excursions. They even helped us organize a driver for a day trip to Fushimi Inari Shrine and the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, which made exploring those farther spots effortless.
There’s also plenty to do right nearby. You can wander through charming Gion, stroll to nearby temples, browse local shops, and simply soak in the historic streets and canals. Staying at The Shinmonzen puts you in the perfect spot to enjoy Kyoto at your own pace.
Spa & Wellness
We didn’t get a chance to visit the spa on this trip, but it looked like a serene spot we would have loved to experience. The Shinmonzen also has a small fitness center onsite, equipped with a rower, treadmill, and bike—perfect for a quick workout if you want to stay active while traveling.
Facility at The Shinmonzen Hotel

The Shinmonzen was designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, and the result is a beautiful balance of traditional Japanese design and modern luxury. Every corner of the property feels intentional, from the serene canal-side terraces to the elegant minimalist interiors. I think they did a fantastic job blending timeless style with the comforts a modern traveler expects.
The facility includes the nine thoughtfully designed suites, each offering privacy and a sense of calm. There’s also the Michelin-starred Jean-Georges restaurant, a small bar for cocktails or a quiet drink, and a terrace perfect for dining al fresco while overlooking the peaceful Shirakawa Canal. For a little souvenir or a taste of Kyoto at home, the hotel also has a boutique featuring premium teas.
Whether you’re enjoying the design, the dining, or just relaxing on the terrace, the facility at The Shinmonzen enhances the entire stay, making it more than just a place to sleep—it’s a full luxury experience.
Family Friendly Amenities at The Shinmonzen Hotel

I’ve talked about how family friendly the hotel is, but want to call out a few of the things that really made a difference for us.
The hotel provided a comfortable crib with plenty of space in the room, and our Slumberpod fit perfectly. They also stocked the room with a bottle warmer, toddler plates, bowls, cups, and silverware—everything we needed for mealtime with our little one.
They even gave her a cute stuffed bear on arrival and she still loves it at home!
The bathroom amenities were equally considerate, including a few diapers, a toiletry kit, a baby towel, and a diaper pail. These small touches made packing lighter and life easier.
They also went above and beyond with logistics: the staff stored our car seat and installed it in cars when we needed it, and they kept our travel stroller safely downstairs when not in use.
Overall, it’s clear that the team at The Shinmonzen loves kids! Families are truly welcomed here and their thoughtful approach made our stay smooth, relaxing, and enjoyable. Which can be tough when traveling with a toddler!
