How to Dress in Japan
If you’re short on time, here is the gist of how to dress in Japan without standing out in a bad way.
Japan has a polished, understated style, and blending in is usually easier than standing out. Think modest cuts, neutral colors, and outfits that feel put-together but comfortable for walking.
You won’t see any locals wearing athletic wear, leggings or crop tops. People are pretty well dressed and respectful here.
Kyoto, in particular, seemed to lean more conservative than Tokyo. While Tokyo can feel trendy and experimental, Kyoto is all about respect especially at temples, shrines, and traditional neighborhoods. Sleeveless tops, short shorts, or very low necklines can feel out of place, so it’s best to keep your outfits more modest and versatile.
Shoes are another key detail. You’ll be doing a lot of walking, and many temples and traditional spaces require removing them. Comfortable, easy-to-slip-on shoes are essential. Avoid overly casual athleisure or flip-flops as they’re not just impractical, they can also feel disrespectful in certain settings.
Also, make sure you wear clean socks since you might be taking off your shoes!

Quick Takeaways for Kyoto Packing
Spring (March–May): Days are warm and perfect for exploring, but mornings and evenings can be a bit chilly. Layers are a must!
Summer (June–August): It’s hot, humid, and sometimes rainy in June. Lightweight, breathable clothes and a compact umbrella will keep you comfortable.
Fall (September–November): The temps are just right for sightseeing and the fall colors are stunning! Bring a light jacket or cardigan for cooler mornings and evenings.
Winter (December–February): Cold but rarely freezing. A warm coat, scarf, and cozy layers will keep you comfortable while wandering the city.
What to Wear in Kyoto during Spring
Since I visited Kyoto in the spring, I’m sharing exactly what I packed and what I actually wore. The weather felt very similar to where I live in Charleston, South Carolina with warm days with cooler mornings and evenings so putting outfits together felt easy and familiar.
Dresses and Skirts

I’m a dress girl, especially for travel. Dresses make packing light so much easier and they always look pulled together! I wore mine with sneakers during the day, then swapped in cute flats or heels at night. They’re also easy to layer with a jacket or cardigan when temperatures drop.
I also brought a midi skirt and top set which was sooo nice for mixing things up. I was able to wear it as a set and then separately with different tops and pants which made packing light for travel even easier!
Jeans & Tops
I wore jeans more than I expected. One day in April got surprisingly hot to where I even got sunburned, but most days were cooler and perfect for jeans and a lightweight top. This combo worked well for long sightseeing days and casual meals.
It did get cool one afternoon even with jeans and a top and our hotel brought me this cozy wrap to wear over my shoulders while we had lunch on the terrace! Speaking of, we stayed at The Shinmonzen and it was incredible – read my full review for more!

Jackets & Sweaters
I packed a neutral colored cardigan to throw over tops and dresses and it got plenty of use. If you’re visiting in March or early April, especially for peak cherry blossom season, I’d suggest packing a warmer coat and pants. Kyoto can still lean chilly that time of year.
Shoes
Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable. I wore my go-to white sneakers that I always travel with and they were perfect. We averaged close to 30,000 steps a day in Japan and these held up beautifully in both Tokyo and Kyoto.
I’ve literally worn these same ones for about 6 years and everywhere from South America to Asia – it’s probably time to replace them, but they’ve been such a good find!
Bags & Accessories
- Crossbody purse: Always. Keeping your hands free is key when walking, sightseeing, and for me, wrangling a toddler.
- Sunglasses: A must, especially on sunny spring days.

What Should Guys Wear in Kyoto?

My husband kept things simple and comfortable. He mostly wore long pants—jeans or khakis—with either a t-shirt or a button-down shirt layered with a lightweight pullover. He packed these white sneakers that worked with all of his outfits and said they were the most comfortable shoes he brought.
He didn’t bring a heavy coat, just a lightweight pullover, which was enough for spring. For nicer dinners, he packed a couple of button-down shirts, a blazer, and dressier shoes to elevate his look without overpacking.
