Best Time to Visit Charleston in Winter
First, you might be wondering if Charleston is worth visiting in winter. Charleston is a wonderful place to visit anytime of year, but winter offers plenty of unique reasons to explore the Holy City. Plus, the temperatures are mild with an average high around 60ºF.
In December, soak up the holiday season with festive events, shopping, and over the top decor. In January, indulge in the culinary scene for Charleston Restaurant Week or participate in the Charleston Half Marathon through the historic streets of downtown. February brings one of the most popular events, the Southeastern Wildlife Expo perfect for outdoor enthusiasts (and those who just like to have a drink outside).
If you are going to visit in the winter season, these are the times I suggest for making the most of your visit. However, if you don’t like crowds, these might also be times you want to avoid with higher hotel rates and tougher to snag restaurant reservations.
Winter Weather in Charleston
The weather in Charleston is fairly mild during the winter time. The average high is in the 60ºs with lows in the 40ºs. It’s great weather for sightseeing and enjoying the walkability of downtown Charleston.
However, anything can happen. As a lifelong native, I have seen 80º December days, but I’ve also seen it snow. Although, it typically never snows and would be very rare to see in Charleston. It’s more common to see sunny and 70º days! Overall, you can expect nicer days and chilly nights during Charleston winters. It’s jeans and medium weight coat weather!

The Ordinary
If you’re a seafood lover, The Ordinary is a must-visit. This upscale spot specializes in fresh, local seafood served in a relaxed yet stylish setting. Be sure to order a variety of oysters on the half shell and my absolute favorite, the oyster sliders! They are fried oyster served on mini Hawaiian rolls that are to die for!
Leon’s Oyster Shop
For a laid-back, fun atmosphere, head to Leon’s. Known for its delicious fried oysters and casual vibe, this spot is perfect for a quick lunch or a relaxed dinner with friends. Don’t forget to try their frozen rosé (even on a cold day!)
Xiao Bao Biscuit
This casual spot combines comfort food with Asian flavors, offering a unique dining experience you won’t want to miss. From their flavorful rice bowls to delicious bao buns, the menu is perfect for the winter season so the spice can warm you up!
Lowland Tavern

If you visiting during Christmas, The Dewberry is one of my number one picks. They go all out with the most GORGEOUS holiday decor every year. The “Living Room” space is the most cozy and festive place for cocktails. Book a room overlooking Marion Square so you can have a view of the giant, lighted Christmas tree that the city has on display.
Hotel Bennett
This stunning hotel combines classic architecture with modern amenities. Hotel Bennett boasts elegant rooms, a rooftop terrace with panoramic views, and a delightful restaurant serving seasonal dishes. It’s a fantastic place to relax and soak in the local atmosphere, especially during the winter holiday season as it’s located right along King Street on Marion Square.

Located in the heart of downtown, Charleston Place offers a luxurious experience with easy access to shopping and dining. The beautifully appointed rooms provide comfort and sophistication, and the hotel features a lovely indoor pool and spa—perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.
During Christmas, The Charleston Place is the place to be! The property is quite large so they have endless decorations to get you in the holiday spirit. One of my must do experiences in winter is seeing it “snow” on Market Street Circle – book well in advance whether you stay there or not!

Winter in Charleston is typically mild, with temperatures ranging from the upper 40s to mid-60s°F. While you won’t need heavy winter gear, it’s always a good idea to dress in layers to adapt to changing conditions throughout the day. It is often cold in the mornings and evenings while the day time warms up in the sun. You will typically find me in jeans and sweaters or cute maxi dresses and boots!
Here are a few must haves for your winter packing list in Charleston:
