Copenhagen is one of my favorite cities in the world and I have been three different times now. We have family friends that live in Denmark so we always try to make a stop anytime we travel to Europe. I’ve been during both Spring and Summer (May, July, and August) and each time was vastly different. The weather makes deciding what to wear in Copenhagen challenging, but I have developed some great strategies to still pack in only my carry-on!
Below, I am sharing my insights on each experience and how you can plan for you trip. I’ve got you covered on how to dress, weather tips, and a complete packing list.

Weather in Copenhagen, Denmark
I’ve been to Copenhagen a few times and I can tell you that the weather can be unpredictable. It’s always a good idea to check the 10-day forecast before you pack your bags. But generally, the weather in Copenhagen is mild with warm summers and cold winters.
The temperature in Copenhagen ranges from an average high of 68°F (20°C) in July to an average low of 28°F (-2°C) in January. But don’t let the average high temperature fool you. Even in the summer, it can get chilly in the evenings, so it’s always a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater.
The wind can also be a factor in Copenhagen. It can be quite windy, especially in the winter months. So, make sure to pack a warm coat, hat, scarf, and gloves if you’re visiting in the winter. It can also rain out of nowhere so always bring a raincoat!
One thing to note is that the weather can change quickly in Copenhagen. It’s not uncommon to experience all four seasons in one day. So, it’s always a good idea to dress in layers so you can adjust your clothing as needed throughout the day.
Best Time to Visit Copenhagen
The best time to visit Copenhagen is definitely summer when the weather is warm and the days are long. You will be able to really maximize your days and take advantage of all the city has to offer. In the summer, enjoy outdoor dining, boat cruises, and evening concert series! This is their high season so if you are looking to travel on a budget or avoid the crowds, try shoulder months. May and September are a great time to visit while the weather is still warm enough, but while most of the summer travelers are not there.
What to Wear in Copenhagen in the Spring
Spring in Copenhagen is a beautiful time of year, but it can also be a bit unpredictable weather-wise. The temperatures can vary greatly from March to April to May, so it’s important to be prepared for anything. Here are some tips on what to wear in Copenhagen in the spring:
Firstly, layers are always key to a Danish wardrobe! I recommend bringing a light jacket or coat that you can easily take on and off as the temperature changes throughout the day.
As for footwear, comfortable and waterproof shoes are a must. The streets of Copenhagen are often cobblestone, so I recommend wearing cute sneakers or ankle booties.
When it comes to clothing, I suggest packing items that can easily be layered and mixed and matched. Jeans are a great option and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Light sweaters and long-sleeved shirts are also perfect for layering.
I visited in May most recently and it was beautiful. It was quite warm in the sun, but cooler biking around and at night time. Here’s what I wore:
Dinners – Maxi dress with leggings hidden underneath, sweater dress and sneakers
Daytime – Jeans or leggings with light sweater and puffer coat, sweater midi dress with light weight sweater layered over top.
Shoes – Pretty much only wore sneakers, but did wear heels one night as we went to a nice event. Sneakers are common with any outfit as most people bike around the city.
Here are some ideas of things I wore in Copenhagen in May:
What to Wear in Copenhagen in the Summer
Summers in Copenhagen are glorious! Everyone is out and about trying to soak up every ounce of sun. Depending on the month, they can get 18 hours of sunlight per day especially around Summer Solstice in June! By the way, that is a great time to be in Denmark because they celebrate this day with fun summer parties.
While temperatures can reach up to 25°C (77°F), it can also drop down to 15°C (59°F) on some days. Therefore, it’s important to pack clothes that can be layered and easily adjusted based on the weather. I visited in July one year and wore mostly jeans and short sleeve tops. The next time, it was record high temps and I wore the same dress two days in a row because it was too hot for my other outfits.
One staple item that you need is a light jacket or cardigan. A jean jacket is great because it goes with everything from dresses to white jeans. I also suggest packing comfortable walking shoes, as Copenhagen is a very pedestrian-friendly city – you will do a lot of walking and biking. Sandals or a wedge heel are a must too for summer dinners, but otherwise you can avoid heels.
Lastly, don’t forget to pack a swimsuit if you plan on taking a dip in the harbor or visiting any of the city’s beaches. You will also want to be sure to bring sunglasses as the summer sun can be very bright.
What to Wear in Copenhagen in the Fall
It’s important to pack a variety of clothing options for the fall months in Copenhagen and really monitor the forecast ahead of time. First and foremost, make sure to bring a waterproof jacket or coat. It’s likely that you’ll encounter some rain during your trip, so it’s better to be prepared.
Again, layering is key in Copenhagen during the fall. Bring a mix of sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, and t-shirts that you can easily layer depending on the weather. A scarf or two can also be a great addition to your outfit, as they can add both warmth and style.
Jeans or other pants are a good choice for bottoms, but make sure to bring at least one pair of leggings or tights to wear underneath if it gets colder. A beanie or hat is great to have especially if biking around.
What to Wear in Copenhagen in the Winter
When visiting Copenhagen in winter, it’s important to dress appropriately for the cold and potentially wet weather. This is the time to bundle up and breakout the wool socks, boots, and puffer coats!
1. Layer up: Rule number one in Copenhagen is to layer! Wearing a coat, scarf, gloves, and booties keeps you warm while remaining fashionable.
2. Warm coat: A coat with a hood and a down jacket is ideal for keeping your head warm. Look for a coat that is waterproof and windproof to protect you from the elements.
3. Wear comfortable shoes: Copenhagen is a city best explored on foot, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes that can handle wet and slippery streets.
4. Accessorize with a hat and gloves: A warm hat and gloves are essential for keeping your extremities warm. Look for materials like wool or fleece for maximum warmth.
5. Pack thermal underwear: If you’re planning on spending a lot of time outdoors, consider packing thermal underwear or leggings to keep you warm and cozy under your jeans.
Overall, the key to dressing for winter in Copenhagen is to prioritize warmth and comfort while still looking stylish. By following these tips, you’ll be able to enjoy all that Copenhagen has to offer, even in the coldest months!
Danish Clothing Style
As I explored the streets of Copenhagen, I couldn’t help but notice the effortless style of the locals. Danish fashion is all about minimalism, comfort, and functionality. The Danes have a unique sense of style that is both practical and fashionable. Here are a few key elements of Danish clothing style:
- Neutral colors: Danes love to wear black, white, grey, and navy. These neutral colors are easy to mix and match, and they create a sleek, sophisticated look.
- Simple designs: Danish clothing is characterized by clean lines and simple designs. The focus is on quality over quantity, and the clothes are designed to last for years.
- Comfortable fabrics: Danes prioritize comfort when it comes to clothing. They love soft, cozy fabrics like wool, cotton, and cashmere. They also appreciate clothes that are easy to move in, like loose-fitting pants and oversized sweaters.
- Functional accessories: Danish fashion is all about practicality. Danes love accessories that serve a purpose, like backpacks, crossbody bags, and comfortable shoes. They also appreciate accessories that can be worn in multiple ways, like scarves and hats.
