Best Time of Year to Visit Bornholm
Wondering when to visit Bornholm? What is the weather like in Bornholm? Well, it is cold much of the year with snowy winters. The best time to visit Bornholm is in the summer from May-September when the sun warms up the island. This time of year is perfect for exploring, spending time on the beach, outdoor dining, and relaxing.
For a country that spends much of the year in the dark, Bornholm offers a sunny escape. It’s known as the one place in Denmark with most days of sunlight each year. The Danes are very fond of this island with many spending summers here beginning as children.
It is visited in the summer mostly by locals from Denmark and a few tourists so you can enjoy an off the beaten path experience as a visitor.
I recommend spending time seeing the sites in Copenhagen then explore Bornholm for a few days.
How to Get to Bornholm
Before you can start exploring the beautiful island of Bornholm, you need to know how to get there. Fortunately, there are several ways to reach this Danish gem, whether you prefer to travel by air or sea.
1. Ferry to Bornholm
FROM SWEDEN TO BORNHOLM:
There is a ferry that departs to Bornholm from Sweden, the Rønne-Ystad route, which takes 80 minutes. They offer up to 8 trips per day during the summer and a high speed ferry.
From Copenhagen, you could also drive to Ystad to catch this high speed ferry.
FROM COPENHAGEN TO BORNHOLM:
You can also book the departure ferry to Bornholm from Denmark (near Copenhagen) which is the Rønne-Køge route, 5 hours and 30 minutes.
FROM GERMANY TO BORNHOLM:
If traveling from Germany to Bornholm, you can book tickets between Rønne and Sassnitz which takes 3 hours and 20 minutes.

2. Flights to Bornholm
When I visited Bornholm, we flew from Aalborg Airport which took about one hour and only cost 45 Euros!
The airport code for Bornholm is RNN and it is located right outside of Ronne, the main port town where ferries are stationed. You will fly with DAT, Danish Airlines to reach the island with direct flights.
Flying is much quicker with flights from Copenhagen to Bornholm only taking 35 minutes.
There are also flights to Bornholm from Aalborg in 1 hour and 15 minutes.
It only costs about 45 euros for a flight from Denmark to Bornholm so it’s pretty economical to reach the island.

Where to Stay on Bornholm
Bornholm offers several charming towns, each with its own unique vibe, making it easy to find the perfect base for your trip.
During our visit, we stayed in Allinge at the Hotel Nordlandet, which turned out to be an ideal home base for exploring the island.
Here’s a quick overview of the best towns to consider staying at in Bornholm:
- Allinge-Sandvig – Nestled on the northern tip of Bornholm, this area is close to the iconic Hammershus ruins and offers a range of accommodation options. Staying here gave us easy access to some of the island’s most breathtaking coastal views.
- Rønne – As Bornholm’s largest town and a hub for transportation, Rønne is conveniently located near the airport and ferry port. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a bustling atmosphere and easy access to the rest of the island.
- Svaneke – This quaint town is bursting with charm and is officially Denmark’s second smallest town. It’s known for its cozy shops, artisanal goods, and a picturesque harbor that feels straight out of a postcard.
- Nexø – Home to Bornholm’s largest fishing port, Nexø is the island’s second-largest town and a lively spot with a strong maritime vibe.

Best Hotels in Bornholm

1. Hotel Nordlandet (Allinge)
We stayed at the fabulous Hotel Nordlandet, where Danish design meets coastal serenity. Our spacious room featured a separate bedroom, a cozy living area with a table and sofa, and a convenient kitchen. Its chic, minimalist style and stunning seaside location made it the perfect base for our Bornholm adventure.
Our favorite parts were the amazing onsite restaurant and Underbar, the most charming little bar for some gin & tonic or a glass of rosé with a view!
2. Stammershalle Badeshotel (Allinge)
Stammershalle Badeshotel is a charming hotel located along the coastline of Bornholm. It was built over 100 years ago in 1911 by German entrepreneurs. You will love the charming pop of yellow color the exterior provides

Rooms are available with city or sea views, but the sea view is a must for those unforgettable sunsets.
5. Fredensborg Badehotel (Rønne)
The sister property to Griffen, Fredensborg Badehotel offers an elevated experience with its ocean-view restaurant, private jetty, paddleboards, bikes, and access to a private beach. On a personal note, my mother-in-law gifted us a beautiful painting from a local artist during our visit as a wedding present—a cherished keepsake that always brings back fond memories of our time on the island.

- Dueodde Beach Trail – Explore the southern coast of Bornholm along this trail, where you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the island’s famous white sand beaches and clear blue waters.
- Døndalen Trail – This easy, family-friendly hike leads through a picturesque valley to Bornholm’s tallest waterfall, which stands at an impressive 65 feet. The 1.5-mile trail is well-maintained, making it accessible for most visitors.
7. See the Waterfalls
If you go to Kobbeå Beach, follow the stream up to Stavehøl waterfall. Also be sure to check out the tallest waterfall in Døndalen.
8. Nexø Artisan Workshop
For those interested in traditional crafts, a visit to the Nexø Artisan Workshop is a must. This workshop is located in the town of Nexø and offers visitors the chance to see skilled artisans at work. The workshop specializes in weaving, spinning, and dyeing wool, and visitors can watch the artisans at work and even purchase some of their beautiful creations.
9. Watch the Glass Makers – Pernille Bülow Glas
Bornholm is renowned for its glassblowing traditions, and a visit to local glassmakers is a must.
Pernille Bülow Glas in Svaneke is famous for creating stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces like sculptures and chandeliers using traditional methods.
I’m personally a fan of their glass pendant lights—they look amazing above a kitchen island or dining nook! After discovering them when we traveled to Bornholm, I had them shipped to the US and they hang above our island at home now!
Another great stop is Baltic Sea Glass in Gudhjem, where you can watch glassblowers in action and explore a beautiful showroom of hand-blown glassware.
Many glassmakers also offer workshops where you can try your hand at glassblowing and create your own piece to take home.
To dive deeper into Bornholm’s glassmaking history, visit the Bornholm Museum in Rønne, which houses glass pieces dating back to the 16th century.

If you love licorice, a stop at Lakrids by Bülow is a must. Founded in 2007, this luxury brand is known for its high-quality licorice made with premium ingredients.
While there, you can tour the factory, learn about licorice’s history, and sample a variety of products. Don’t miss their famous chocolate-coated licorice, a sweet and indulgent treat.
They also offer liquorice powder, syrup, and tea—perfect for bringing a taste of Bornholm home!

If you’re short on time and can only visit one, make it Østerlars Round Church—it’s the largest on the island and absolutely stunning! Whether you’re a history lover or just appreciate unique architecture, these round churches are a must-see.

Bornholm is known for its delicious and unique local cuisine. The island is famous for its smoked herring, which is a must-try for seafood lovers. Although, I am not a huge fan, but you do have to try it when in Denmark!

Klub Vollmer is a food club and cooking school founded by Danish chef and cookbook author Jesper Vollmer. Located in Bornholm, Klub Vollmer offers cooking classes, food tastings, and private dining experiences. Jesper Vollmer is known for his passion for cooking and his desire to inspire people to eat better.
At Klub Vollmer, visitors can learn how to cook traditional Danish dishes, as well as other international cuisines. How to Get Around Bornholm
Car Rentals
If you prefer to have your own transportation like we did, you can rent a car from one of the car rental companies on the Danish island. There are several options available, including Avis, Budget, Europcar, and Hertz. Check for the best rates here with Discover Cars.
Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace, and it allows you to visit some of the more remote areas that are not easily accessible by public transportation. Keep in mind that the roads on Bornholm can be narrow and winding, so it is important to drive carefully and pay attention to the signs.
In my opinion, a rental car is the easiest way to move around the island. There is much to see and this will get you there most efficiently.
Buses
Bornholm has a bus network that connects the main towns and villages on the island. Buses run every hour between the main towns and less frequently on Saturdays and Sundays. The bus system is operated by BAT (Bornholms Amts Trafikselskab), and you can find the bus schedules and routes on their website. The buses are comfortable, reliable, and affordable, making them a popular choice for travelers.
Bicycles
One of the best ways to explore Bornholm is by bicycle. The island has a network of well-maintained bike paths that take you through scenic countryside and picturesque villages. You can rent a bike from one of the many bike rental shops on the island, or you can bring your own bike on the ferry. Biking is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the fresh air while taking in the sights and sounds of the island.
