The best time to visit is in the summer from May-September when the sun warms up the island. This time of year is perfect for exploring, spending time on the beach, outdoor dining, and relaxing.
It is visited in the summer mostly by locals from Denmark and a few tourists.
How to Get to Bornholm
Before you can start exploring the beautiful island of Bornholm, you need to know how to get there. Fortunately, there are several ways to reach this Danish gem, whether you prefer to travel by air or sea.
Ferry to Bornholm
There is a ferry that departs from Sweden, the Rønne-Ystad route, which takes 80 minutes. They offer up to 8 trips per day during the summer and a high speed ferry.
You can also book the departure from Denmark (near Copenhagen) which is the Rønne-Køge route, 5 hours and 30 minutes. If traveling from Germany, you can book tickets between Rønne and Sassnitz which takes 3 hours and 20 minutes.
From Copenhagen, you could also drive to Ystad to catch this high speed ferry.

Flights to Bornholm
The airport code for Bornholm is RNN and it is located right outside of Ronne, the main port town where ferries are stationed. You will fly with DAT, Danish Airlines to reach the island with direct flights.
Flying is much quicker with flights from Copenhagen only taking 35 minutes or from Aalborg in 1 hour and 15 minutes. It only costs about 45 euros so it’s pretty economical to reach the island.

There are a few little towns where you could choose to stay during your trip.

- Svaneke – a super charming town with shops known for being the second smallest town in Denmark.
- Nexø – the second largest town on the island with the largest fishing port.

Hotel Nordlandet (Allinge)
We stayed at the fabulous Hotel Nordlandet. Danish design is simple, but chic at this coastal hotel. Our room was spacious with separate bedroom and living area with table, sofa, and kitchen.
Our favorite parts were the amazing onsite restaurant and Underbar, the most charming little bar for some gin & tonic or a glass of rosé.
You will also have access for a dip in the ocean!
Stammershalle Badeshotel (Allinge)
Stammershalle Badeshotel is a charming hotel located along the coastline of Bornholm. It was built over 100 years ago in 1911 by German entrepreneurs. You will love the charming pop of yellow color the exterior provides

Allinge Badehotel (Allinge)
Allinge Badehotel is right along the shoreline with easy access to the beach and dock for swimming. The rooms have a classic coastal look to them with white linens and a blue & white striped wallpaper featured throughout. They are so calming and make a peaceful place to unwind.
Griffen Spahotel (Rønne)
If you are looking for a hotel with onsite spa, this is your best option. Griffen Spahotel has a wellness center with spa services, hot tub, sauna, and indoor pool. Choose from a room with a city view or beautiful sea views. I say go for the sea view since this side of the island will give you prime sunset views!
Fredensborg Badehotel (Rønne)
Fredensborg Badehotel is the sister property to the Griffen and offers many wonderful amenities. Enjoy a restaurant with ocean views, bikes to explore the island, access to the private jetty, paddleboards, fitness center, and swimming pools. I love their large garden which features lounge chairs, heated pool, giant chess board, and of course, access to the private beach.

Hammershus Castle Ruins
Hammershus is the most popular attraction in Bornholm. The Medieval ruins are the oldest in all of Northern Europe believed to be built during the 12th century! It is so cool to see the castle ruins close up, plus there is a super nice visitor center and cafe on site. We drove here and hiked back to our hotel along the coastal trail. It was one of our favorite days!
The Bornholm Art Museum
Bornholm is known for its many artists that are drawn to the island for its natural beauty and soft light. You will definitely want to visit the museum. The building itself is a work of art, built in modern Danish design.
