I visited the Pacific Coast in January and it was exactly what I hoped for: warm, sunny beach days with very little rain. It’s also a great time for outdoor adventures like hiking around Arenal Volcano, exploring jungle trails, and enjoying clear views of Costa Rica’s dramatic landscapes. Certain seasons are better for specific experiences, whether that’s spotting wildlife, surfing world-class waves, or trekking through cloud forests.

Costa Rica has a tropical climate which means it’s warm year-round, but how much sun or rain you get really depends on where you are and when you visit. The country basically has two main seasons: dry season (December to April) and rainy, or “green,” season (May to November).
We went in January and one of the things I was surprised by along the Pacific Coast was that it was NOT the lush, jungle vibes I had envisioned when I thought of Costa Rica. It was the dry season and the trees and grass looked it along the coast!
Temperature varies by region and elevation: along the coast, it’s hot and humid, perfect for beach days. The Central Valley, where San José sits, stays mild and comfortable making it a great base for exploring. And up in the highlands, like Monteverde or near the volcanoes, it’s cooler and misty.
Rainy Season vs Dry Season in Costa Rica
Costa Rica basically has two moods: sun-soaked and dry or lush and rainy and each has its perks.
☀️ Dry Season (December–April) – This is the classic vacation vibe: lots of sun, minimal rain, and perfect beach weather! It’s also the busiest time, so expect more tourists and higher prices. If you’re after clear skies for hiking, surfing, or exploring the Pacific Coast, this is your season.
🌧️ Rainy/Green Season (May–November) – Also called the “green season” for a reason because everything is vibrant and lush. Green season (May, June, November) is those transitional months and rainy season (August, September, October) is when it has the heaviest rainfall. Expect afternoon showers that cool things off, fewer crowds, and better hotel deals. Some trails and beaches can get slippery or muddy, but the tradeoff is quieter spots, stunning waterfalls, and a more local vibe.
💡 Note: rainy season does NOT mean it rains all the time! It’s a tropical destination which usually means quick, but hard showers in the afternoon/evenings. Mornings are still usually great for exploring.
Costa Rica’s Main Regions & Weather Patterns
Costa Rica’s weather isn’t one-size-fits-all and it really depends on which part of the country you want to visit. Here’s a quick guide to the main regions:
Pacific Coast
If you want a sunny beach vacation, this is where you probably want to go.
This is the sunniest side of Costa Rica, perfect for lounging on beaches or exploring coastal towns. The northern Pacific stays relatively dry during the green season, but the southern Pacific sees more rain from May through November.
We visited Guanacaste in January and the weather was perfect for sailing, surfing, and lounging in the sun! Though as I mentioned earlier, it was not the lush Costa Rica I had envisioned full of green leaves!
Caribbean Coast
Rain here is a bit unpredictable and you can get showers any time of year. The rainy season isn’t as wet as the Pacific side, so it can be a great option if you’re visiting mid-year and want fewer crowds. The least rainy months on the Caribbean side are actually September and October! July and December typically see the most rainfall here.
Central Valley (San Jose)
Home to San José and surrounding towns, the Central Valley has mild, comfortable temperatures year-round. It’s a perfect base for exploring volcanoes, coffee farms, and nearby cloud forests without the intense coastal heat.
Highlands (Monteverde & Volcanoes)
Up in the mountains, it’s cooler and misty at the cloud forests! Rain can fall year-round, so pack a light jacket and waterproof shoes if you’re heading here.

Costa Rica’s weather changes a lot throughout the year, so it helps to group months by seasonal trends. Here’s a simple guide to see what to expect, plus the best activities for each month.
Costa Rica in December–April: Dry Season
This is the sunniest stretch of the year and it’s easy to see why it’s the most popular time to visit Costa Rica. Expect minimal rain, lots of sunshine, and perfect beach weather along the Pacific Coast.
Trails are clear for hiking, volcano views are unobstructed, and water activities like surfing, snorkeling, and sailing are at their best. Keep in mind, this is peak season, so popular beaches and hotels can get busy and prices are higher.
Costa Rica in May–June, November: Green Season
The green season kicks in with occasional afternoon showers, but don’t let that fool you there’s still plenty of sun for exploring. This is one of the best times to visit because the landscape is vibrant and the waterfalls are spectacular.
Green seasons is basically the transitional months between dry and rainy season.
Crowds are smaller, so you’ll enjoy quieter beaches and trails and hotel rates are often lower. Surfing and wildlife spotting are still excellent, especially in the Pacific and Caribbean regions.
Costa Rica in August–October: True Rainy Season
These months bring the heaviest rains, especially along the southern Pacific Coast. Some areas are best avoided if you want dry days, but the payoff is breathtakingly lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and better prices!
Expect afternoon or evening showers that often clear quickly, and take advantage of quiet beaches, vibrant jungle hikes, and peak turtle nesting season along the Caribbean. Reminder that rainy season does not mean it rains all day long!

I always remember hearing about people from home heading to surf in Costa Rica in the winter (Dec-Mar) and knew I had to at least catch a wave there myself. It was so fun!

I definitely reached for a light sweater in the evenings in January especially during our sunset sail!
Plan Around Afternoon Showers – During the green season, showers usually hit in the afternoons and clear by evening. Plan morning hikes or beach time early, then use the afternoon to explore towns, enjoy a spa, or relax at your hotel.
