Toddler travel essentials can make all the difference when exploring the world with your little one. We’ve taken our daughter across the U.S., explored cities in Europe, and even navigated the chaos of airports in Japan since she was only 2 months old! Each trip has taught us what really makes traveling with a baby and toddler easier.
I won’t sugarcoat it: packing for a toddler can feel overwhelming. I try to pack light and usually stick to carry-on luggage, so I know how to maximize limited space while still bringing everything we actually need. Between clothes, snacks, toys, and sleep essentials, it’s easy to feel like you’re carrying your entire house, but there are ways to make it manageable.
After countless flights, train rides, and long days exploring, I’ve narrowed it down to the toddler travel essentials that truly make life on the road smoother. From sleep solutions to snacks, gear, and entertainment, these are the items I personally use and love—and that I wouldn’t leave home without. I hope this helps your family feel confident and relaxed when traveling!

Short on Time? Here Are My Top 5 Must-Have Items for Traveling with a Toddler
- SlumberPod – Gives your toddler their own dark sleep space so everyone gets better rest.
- Travel Stroller – Lightweight, compact, and makes airports and city streets so much easier.
- Diaper Bag – Keeps snacks, wipes, and outfits organized so you’re not digging mid-flight.
- Travel Car Seat – Lightweight, safe, and easy to install. Plus, you can stuff the travel bag with extras.
- Travel Baby Monitor – Quick to set up and doesn’t need a secure WIFI connection.
Toddler Travel Essentials for Sleep & Comfort
1. SlumberPod
If you’re sharing a room with your toddler, the SlumberPod is a lifesaver. It creates a dark, cozy space just for them, which means better sleep for everyone. No more sitting quietly in the dark or hiding in the bathroom once your little one is down—you can actually enjoy your evening. It packs down small, and honestly, I don’t travel without it.
2. Portable Sound Machine
Consistency is everything when it comes to toddler sleep. A small, portable sound machine helps block out hotel noise, hallway doors slamming, or street sounds outside. We used to lug around this bigger version, but now I swear by these compact ones since they take up no space in your bag and make bedtime so much smoother.
3. Favorite Blanket or Lovey
Toddlers sleep best when they feel safe and comfortable, and nothing does that like bringing along a favorite blanket, lovey, or stuffed animal. It makes unfamiliar cribs and hotel rooms feel just a little more like home. If your child is in a crib, consider packing one of your own crib sheets too—the familiar smell alone can help them settle in more easily.
4. Travel Baby Monitor
We have the Nanit at home and the special travel stand, but honestly it’s a pain since it requires secure Wi-Fi. We switched to a simpler travel monitor that sets up in seconds. It’s been such a relief to use while traveling and you can actually relax once your toddler is asleep.
5. Travel Crib/Pack and Play
We do not travel with a crib for our daughter when going internationally. If we’re going somewhere more local (in the car), we’ll take our pack & play – we have this one and it’s very nice and sturdy!
I’ve always relied on our hotel to provided a crib and they have come through for us. I have a whole post on the cribs we’ve had in Europe.
However, if you have an infant and need the peace of mind for a safe sleep space, I’ve heard great things about the Baby Bjorn or Guava (rated 4.7 stars on Amazon with thousands of reviews). Both are super lightweight and you can check them for free usually.
Toddler Gear for Getting Around
6. Travel Stroller
I tried to get away without a travel stroller, but quickly learned it’s a must in Europe and most international destinations. A good one is lightweight, folds down easily for airports, and can handle city streets better than you’d expect. Ours has been through cobblestones in Copenhagen, train platforms in Japan, and long days exploring—and I can honestly say I love it. Here is the one we have!
7. Baby Carrier
A baby carrier is such a game changer, especially when your baby is younger. We used ours until about age one, and it was perfect for airports, train stations, and places where strollers just don’t work, like cobblestone streets or hikes. I have the Artipoppe carrier and loved how comfortable it was for both of us. It is worth the splurge for sure and can be used for up to about a 2 year old!

8. Car Seat
If you’re renting a car or taking a road trip, you’ll want to bring a car seat you trust. We now use a lightweight one that’s easy to carry in its travel bag. When my daughter was under one, we brought our UPPAbaby car seat that attached to our stroller—it made travel seamless. Now, the lighter seat saves our backs while still being safe and easy to install.
Pro tip: we stuff the carseat travel bag with diapers and our SlumberPod, so it all checks for free. We duct tape everything into the seat so it stays put!
9. Diaper Bag
An organized diaper bag is a must when traveling with a toddler. Having everything in its place—snacks, wipes, extra outfits—saves you from digging around in a panic mid-flight. I love the one we use because it’s not too big, but it’s durable enough for travel and slips easily onto a rolling suitcase, which is a lifesaver when juggling luggage and a little one.
I also have these zipper bags to help organize it even more! And don’t forget this little diaper trash bag attachment for disposing of diapers or trash on the go.
Travel Musts for Feeding a Toddler
10. Travel High Chair or Booster
We don’t usually fly with a high chair, but it’s great to throw in the car for road trips. At restaurants, I count on there being a high chair—or we’ll use the stroller if we have to. It’s usually worked out just fine, but having a clip-on or foldable option for an Airbnb can definitely come in handy. We have this one and use it at home all the time!

11. Snack Containers
Easy-to-open, mess-free snack containers are worth packing from home. They’re perfect for the plane or long travel days, and you’ll be glad to have something familiar for your toddler when hunger hits.
12. Reusable Water Bottle or Sippy Cup
A spill-proof cup is essential when you’re out all day. We always travel with my daughter’s toddler HydroFlask and a sippy cup just for milk. Having both keeps things simple and avoids any mid-day meltdowns.
13. Bottle Brush and Soap
If you’re bringing bottles or sippy cups, a travel-size bottle brush is a must. We usually pack a small brush and soap, though sometimes I’ll just buy soap once we arrive. It makes cleaning on the go so much easier.
14. Cooler Bag
Coolers for toddler milk, formula, or breastmilk are allowed as an extra carry-on if you have a lap infant ticket. I pack ours with Ripple milk and as many pouches as I can fit—it’s been a lifesaver when airport or airplane food isn’t toddler-friendly. I love mine so much I use it as a lunchbox at home, too.
15. Snacks
I can’t stress this enough: bring as many snacks as you possibly can from home. Pouches, puffs, crackers, all of your toddler’s favorites. They snack so much more on travel days than at home. When we were in Japan, my daughter barely touched regular food for the first few days (probably the time change) and survived on snacks we brought, plus applesauce and strawberries.
Toddler Essentials for Airplane Entertainment & Activities
My number one tip: bring things your toddler already loves! Familiar toys and activities go a long way in keeping them happy on long travel days. Some of our favorites are window spinners, a busy book, a drawing tablet, toddler headphones (we play lots of nursery rhymes), and mess-free coloring pages.
New toys can be exciting, but don’t rely only on them. If something requires a bit of learning, introduce it before your trip. On our flight to Japan, my daughter completely ignored her busy book—it was too new and unfamiliar. Now it’s her favorite and will be perfect for our next adventure.
16. Travel Toys and Busy Books
Compact and quiet toys are your best friend on planes, trains, and at restaurants. A busy book, small figurines, or even reusable stickers can keep little hands occupied without disturbing the people around you.
Here’s some we have and love:
- window spinners – these have been great at all ages so far for our 2 year old!
- our busy book with farm theme! so impressed by this book.
- giraffe sensory toys
- these fun travel magnets toys

17. Stickers and Coloring Pads
Lightweight and mess-free, stickers and coloring pads are easy to pack and perfect for pulling out when your toddler needs a distraction. Bonus that they take up hardly any space in your bag.
- Mess-free coloring pages – we love Bluey!
- This sticker stamp book!
- These thin reusable sticker booklets – so they don’t wind up stuck to an airplane seat or hotel wall
- Water Wow books – amazing since they are reusable!
- This amazing drawing tablet – feels very therapeutic for me too lol
18. Tablet and Headphones
If you use them, a ipad/tablet and toddler-sized headphones are a lifesaver for long flights. We load our ipad with favorite shows, nursery rhymes, and a few simple games. We put it in this cute case for her!
It gives everyone a break and helps make those hours in the air much more manageable. We avoided screen time until 18 months, but now let her use it for long travel days and it’s nice to have to avoid public meltdowns.
Toddler Travel Essentials for Health & Safety
19. Toddler First Aid Kit
A small first aid kit is always worth packing. Ours includes band-aids, fever medicine, wipes, and anything specific to our toddler’s needs. You never know when you’ll need it, and having it on hand saves you from scrambling in a new city.
20. Wipes and Hand Sanitizer
These are non-negotiable. Wipes aren’t just for diaper changes. They’re for sticky hands, restaurant tables, airplane trays, you name it. Hand sanitizer is also a must when you’re constantly on the go and don’t have easy access to soap and water. I love the sanitizer wipes since they are easier to use on a toddler.
21. Extra Outfit in Your Carry-On (for Everyone)
Spills, accidents, delayed luggage—it happens. Always pack an extra outfit not just for your toddler, but for yourself too. Trust me, if your toddler spills milk all over you mid-flight (or worse), you’ll be so glad you have a change of clothes handy.
