I tackled this hike with my husband and a few friends during an August visit, and it was nothing short of magical. The views were breathtaking, and exploring this remote island felt surreal.
That said, getting there was a bit of an adventure, and the trail itself had its challenges, like navigating some seriously muddy spots.

The Kallur Lighthouse hike on Kalsoy Island is about 4.8 km (3 miles) round trip and took us 2 hours to complete. It’s an easy to moderate trail, perfect for anyone with basic hiking experience.
The toughest part? A steep uphill climb right at the start—and yes, it’s muddy (it rains a lot in the Faroes!). But trust me, the jaw-dropping views are worth every step. You’ll also see some local sheep along the way!
Thankfully, the mountain provides some shelter from the wind until you reach the top, so it’s surprisingly comfortable for most of the hike. I even found myself taking my jacket on and off as the weather shifted. Once you get to the summit, though, the wind can pick up, so it’s good to be prepared for that!
What to Expect on this Trail
The hike begins in the charming village of Trøllanes (translates to “where the trolls live”), where you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard. From there, it’s all about embracing the adventure!
To begin, you enter through a red gate which feels like you are walking through someone’s farm land (you are) and then you start the uphill ascent, You’ll reach the top and can see incredible views of the surrounding islands and below to the town of Trøllanes.
You will continue on across the grassy trail where you will be greeted by the local sheep. It’s true that there are more sheep than people in the Faroe Islands!
Once you reach the top near the lighthouse, you’ll find a ridge that intersects with three points. To the front of the lighthouse, you can hike out for the iconic photo op! Look west, and you’ll see the island of Eysturoy.
To the east, the trail takes you to the furthest point toward Kunoy and Viðoy islands. Look south to see the James Bond monument in front of the cliff (Borgarin 537 m / 1761 feet) and the Nestindar mountain (788 m / 2585 feet).
The view is truly breathtaking. I’ve hiked Patagonia, and this is nearly as stunning. It feels surreal and so remote—pictures can’t capture how massive these cliffs are.
After you check out all the viewpoints, head back in the same direction to return to the starting point.
Kallur Lighthouse Hike Fee
There’s now a fee to hike to Kallur Lighthouse, which wasn’t the case when we went. Here’s the breakdown:
Hiking Fee:
- Adults: 200 DKK (about $25USD)
- Children (ages 13-17): 100 DKK
- Children (ages 0-12): Free
You can pay with credit card on site. It does not include a guide.
Ferry Cost:
- Vehicle and Driver: 160 DKK (about $22USD)
- Adults as Passenger: 40 DKK (~$6USD)

There are specific visiting hours that you are allowed to hike as well:
- Monday – Friday: 9 am – 6 pm
- Saturday: 9 am – 5 pm

How to Get to Kallur Lighthouse
Getting to Kalsoy Island—and eventually to the Kallur Lighthouse—takes a bit of effort, but you’ve got options! Kalsoy is only accessible by ferry (there’s no tunnel or bridge connecting it to the other islands). Fun fact: the ferry is named Sam!
We opted for a guided hike, which cost $115 USD per person. It’s a bit pricey, but completely worth it for the convenience and time saved by not having to deal with bringing a car across the ferry. Plus, the insights from our guide made the Kallur Lighthouse experience even more memorable!
Here’s the rundown on how to get to Kallur Lighthouse:
1. Ferry to Kalsoy Island
You’ll first drive to Klaksvík, Borðoy Island and board the Route 56 ferry to Syðradalur on Kalsoy. The ferry only takes about 10 – 20 minutes. You can park for free at the ferry terminal. From there, you can:
- Drive your rental car onto the ferry and navigate the island yourself.
- Use the local buses, which are timed with the ferry schedule.
- Book a guided tour and let someone else handle the logistics.
Pro Tip: The ferry only takes 12 cars and fills up fast, so plan to arrive early to secure your spot. Fortunately, you can book in advance now and I highly recommend it.
When we returned after our hike, there was a huge line of cars waiting to board, and only a few made it on—including a tractor! The ferry will keep running until all cars make it across, but that could mean waiting into the night so be sure you secure your spots ASAP. We were glad to just be passengers!
2. Drive to Kallur Lighthouse
Once you arrive on Kalsoy from the ferry, you can either drive yourself or use the local buses.
If you’re considering driving yourself, just know that Kalsoy’s roads include a narrow, one-lane tunnel to Trøllanes. There are plenty of pull-offs, but it’s dark, and buses use the tunnel too (it’s a tight squeeze!). It’s manageable if you’re confident behind the wheel, but if that sounds intimidating, a guided tour is a stress-free alternative. It is a 20 minute drive from Syðradalur to Trøllanes.
Alternatively, using the buses on Kalsoy Island is a convenient way to reach the start of the Kallur Lighthouse hike. The local buses are synchronized with the ferry arrivals, making it easy to hop on once you get off the boat. While it’s a great option if you’re not driving, just keep in mind that the bus schedules are limited, so plan accordingly to make sure you don’t miss your ride!
Kallur Lighthouse Guided Tours
There are several guided tour options to visit the Kallur Lighthouse. We opted for a guided tour, and it was fantastic. Our guide shared incredible stories about the island’s history and culture—plus, we didn’t have to stress about driving.
1. Fantastic 5 Hour Kalsoy Island & Kallur Lighthouse Tour – $192USD
This is the tour we took! We had a great guide that was knowledgable about the Faroese history. It included transportation from the ferry port to the hiking entrance, a stop in Mikladalur to see the seal woman statue, and then we were dropped back off at the ferry.
2. Official James Bond Tombstone Tour in the Faroe Islands – $533USD
This is a fantastic day tour option led by a local guide known as the “King of Kalsoy,” who also appeared in the credits of No Time to Die and is the farmer in Trøllanes. You’ll experience breathtaking scenery around Kalsoy featured in the latest James Bond film, No Time to Die.
After the hike, you’ll be invited into one of the few homes in Trøllanes, which also served as the base camp for the film crew during the shoot. Here, you’ll enjoy a delicious local lamb meal (vegetarian option available) in the same spot where the crew gathered during filming.

Iconic Photo Spot at Kallur Lighthouse
If you’ve seen photos of Kallur Lighthouse, chances are you’ve come across this iconic spot: a narrow trail with the lighthouse in the background. The view is absolutely breathtaking, but be warned—it can be a bit treacherous. If the conditions aren’t ideal, it’s not worth the risk. Wind or fog can make it pretty dangerous.
To get there, you’ll walk around the lighthouse and down a narrow, one-way trail that hugs the cliff, with the ocean far below. If you venture all the way to the edge, you’ll find a tiny patch of cliff to stand on—incredible, but also a little terrifying! Definitely take extra caution and only go if the weather is calm.
James Bond Monument
You may have heard there’s a James Bond connection to Kallur Lighthouse. The lighthouse was featured in the 2021 film No Time to Die. Spoiler alert: it’s actually the location where James Bond meets his end in the movie. It was so cool watching the film after we’d visited and recognized the spots!
A neat little touch for Bond fans is a commemorative tombstone near the lighthouse, marking the iconic scene. Definitely a must-see for any movie buffs making the hike!
What to Wear and Bring
There are a few things you should wear hiking to Kallur Lighthouse. Don’t forget the following items:
Clothing
A waterproof and windproof jacket and pants are a must. I wore these fleece-lined leggings, a long-sleeve top, a warm puffer coat, and my favorite hiking boots. We also packed our raincoats in our backpacks just in case—it’s the Faroes, after all! The weather changes fast, so layering is key. I found myself taking my coat on and off constantly with the shifting winds.
Footwear
Sturdy hiking boots with good traction are essential. The trail can get muddy and uneven, so make sure your boots can handle that. These are my favorite affordable hiking boots that I wore!
Accessories
Bring a hat and gloves, especially if you’re hiking in cooler months or just cold natured!
Backpack
Pack water, snacks, and a map. You never know when you’ll need a quick energy boost or directions. Cell service and GPS are not the most reliable in the Faroe Islands so I would download maps to your phone.
Lunch
There’s a cafe in Trøllanes with coffee and a few meal options like waffles, or you can check out the cafe in nearby Mikaladur. We asked our hotel where to grab a picnic, and they kindly made us sandwiches to take along! It was the perfect touch for our hike.
Tips for a Successful Hike
A few tips to make sure you have the best time hiking in the Faroe Islands.
1. Weather Considerations
Always check the weather forecast before heading out. Avoid hiking in foggy or stormy conditions, as they can make the trail dangerous and the views less impressive.
2. Trail Conditions
The trail has some steep and muddy sections, so take your time and use caution, especially if it’s been raining. Good footwear will make a big difference!
3. Photography
For the best lighting, try to hike during sunrise or sunset. But, be cautious near the cliff edges—especially on windy or foggy days. If the weather’s rough, don’t risk it for a photo. Safety first!
Visiting Mikladur and the Seal Woman Statue (Kópakonan)
While hiking to Kallur Lighthouse was the highlight of our time on Kalsoy, our guided tour also took us to the Seal Woman Statue, which turned out to be a beautiful and unexpected gem. To be honest, we probably wouldn’t have visited this spot if not for the tour, but I’m so glad we did.
The statue is located near the village of Mikladur and tells the tale of the legendary Seal Woman, a story from Faroese folklore. It’s a stunning spot, with the statue set against a backdrop of the sea and neighboring islands. There is also a picturesque waterfall that you can’t miss in the Faroe Islands. The peaceful atmosphere and scenic views make it a perfect spot for a quick break or some reflection.
There is also a little cafe here called Cafe Edge, where you can grab coffee or a beer while enjoying the views.
If you have time, I highly recommend adding it to your Faroe Islands itinerary—it’s a lovely, tranquil spot that gives you a deeper connection to the island’s culture and natural beauty.
