How to Get to the Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is accessible from either Rome Airport (FCO) or Naples Airport (NAP). As of recently, you can now fly a bit more direct right into Salerno to the Amalfi Coast Airport (QSR). From any or these airports you will need to take a car, train, and/or ferry to reach the Amalfi Coast.
Driving from Naples is approximately 90 minutes and from Rome takes 3 hours.
Naples
On our way there, we personally flew right into Naples and had a driver take us the 90 minute transfer to Amalfi. We booked with Cammartota Travel company and can recommend.
Rome
If arriving/departing from Rome, I recommend to take the high speed train into Salerno which is what we have done when departing from the coast. It takes about 90 minutes on the train.
The cost of private transportation or taxi is quite expensive. We booked train tickets via Italia Rail – book business class!
Salerno
If you fly or train into Salerno, you must take the ferry or hire a taxi to reach your final destination or hotel. If you take a train from either Rome or Naples, you will arrive in Salerno and need to find transportation to your hotel from there.

Best Time to Visit the Amalfi Coast
The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast is typically in the summer months from about May-September. These months will be the warmest and the businesses will be open for the tourist season. Enjoy sailing along the coastline, soaking up the sun in Positano, and dining on homemade pasta.
HIGH SEASON
High season in the Amalfi Coast is June, July, and August when the weather is nice and warm! This is the prime time to visit to take advantage of beach weather and warmer water temps. However, this means it will be quite crowded and expensive.
SHOULDER SEASON
I recommend to visit during the shoulder months of May and September. While the hotels typically reopen in April, it is still a bit cool with higher chances for rain. I visited in May and enjoyed hot weather and better rates at the hotels. It also was not AS crowded since most people wait for summer to take vacation in Europe.
LOW SEASON
Low season coincides with the winter months from October-March. Many businesses close for the season, however, you can still visit and enjoy the beautiful region. Keep in mind, it will be cold and not suitable for a beach day or the many great things that Amalfi is known for.
How Expensive is the Amalfi Coast?
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most popular destinations in the world. This makes it a very expensive place to travel, unfortunately. If you visit during the summer months, you will see hotel rates over $1500/night easily and up to $3500+/night.
While there are many high end luxury hotels, you can still find more approachable options like inns and villas. I also recommend some of the other towns on the coast instead of popular Positano and Amalfi. There are many wonderful places to stay in the Amalfi Coast like Praiano, Sorrento and Maori that will have more reasonable options.
12 Reasons to Visit the Amalfi Coast
There are many reasons why Amalfi is worth visiting. I’m sharing a few of my favorite things about this seaside area.
1. Breathtaking Scenery and Dramatic Coastline
The scenery in the Amalfi Coast is truly remarkable and unlike anywhere I have been. Pictures do not do it justice. I can’t explain how massive the cliffs are along the Tyrhennian Sea. The charming villages carved into the mountainside are spectacular filled with historic buildings, churches, and stone streets.
If that weren’t enough, the coast is blooming with jasmine, bougainvillea, and wisteria making it all the more beautiful.
2. Colorful Seaside Villages like Positano
The Amalfi Coast is actually an entire area made up of several quaint towns and villages including Praiano, Maiori, Positano, Amalfi, Minori, Sorrento, Atrani, Ravello, Vietri sul Mare, Furore and more.
Each one has its own unique characteristics which appeal to different types of visitors. I recommend to explore as many as you can to see which best suits your travel style.

3. Sailing Along the Coast
One of the most popular things to do on the Amalfi Coast is to take a boat cruise along the coast. I mentioned the towns and villages that make up the coast and part of the appeal is seeing them from the water. It provides such a beautiful perspective and you can sip champagne as you sail along!
The best part of Positano is to simply admire its gorgeous cliffside village, not necessarily to be IN it – in my opinion!
⛵️ I recommend booking a private Amalfi Coast boat tour with a driver!
4. Fresh Seafood and Coastal Italian Cuisine
There is nothing quite like the food in Southern Italy. The cuisine consists of pizza, homemade pasta, and freshly caught seafood like clams and fish. You will find everything from family owned cafes to Michelin starred fine dining at the best Amalfi Coast restaurants.
5. Visit Historic Sites in Amalfi and Pompeii
Amalfi has a rich maritime history as an important port for the Mediterranean between 839 and about 1200. It rivaled ports such as Pisa and Genoa in its time and they claim to have invented the compass.
There are beautiful cathedrals like the Duomo di Amalfi and Sant’Andrea that date back to the 11th century.
However, it was not until the early 1800s that a road was built between Naples and the Amalfi Coast. This opened the region to tourism and they have been serving visitors ever since.
You can also easily day trip or stop at Pompeii on your way. We all remember Pompeii as the town devestated when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. It’s now an archaeological site mostly preserved from ash and showcases ancient Roman life frozen in time.

6. Amazing Beaches and Beach Clubs in Amalfi
The dramatic coastline makes for some incredible beaches to spend the day. One of the most popular is Spiaggia di Positano, a public beach with the colorful cliff as its backdrop.
You can also access private beach clubs like La Scogliera Positano to reserve your own space with chairs and umbrellas. They serve food and drinks so it’s a great way to spend an afternoon. When booking on their site, you can see a real life visual of what view you will have!
7. Day Trip to Capri
Capri is an island off the coast of Amalfi that is known for its scenery, beaches, Blue Grotto (sea cave), and the Faraglioni (sea stacks). Doing a day trip is very popular or you can spend a couple nights on the island at one of the chic hotels.
🌊I recommend this day trip to Capri!
8. World Class Hotels and Resorts
Some of the most incredible hotels in the world are located along the Amalfi Coast. If you are planning a special trip like a honeymoon, these world class resorts will make staying in the Amalfi Coast all the more memorable.
We stayed at Borgo Santandrea Amalfi, an incredible new hotel built into the cliffs. There’s also the Belmond Ravello situated atop the mountains overlooking the coast, the iconic Le Sirenuse in Positano, and the charming Hotel Santa Caterina. Did I mention each of these hotels feature Michelin starred restaurants onsite?!

9. Spend a Day in Ravello at Villa Rufolo
Speaking of Ravello, it is a great little town way atop the cliff that overlooks the entire Amalfi Coast. The views are incredible to say the least. You can visit for the day to see the gardens at Villa Rufolo, take a cooking class, or even stay for a couple nights.
Many people choose to do a few nights down by the coast and another couple in either Ravello or Capri. Or yu could do all three if you have the time!
10. Hike the Path of the Gods
The Path of the Gods is an incredible hike that takes you from one end of the Amalfi Coast to the other. It’s a relatively easy hike with a steep path up and down. It’s totally worth it for a little exercise and breathtaking views.
11. Shop for Authentic Ceramics
Italy is known for their handmade ceramics and pottery painted in vibrant colors. There’s plenty of great little shops to check out where you can find something special to take home.
12. Try the Local Limoncello
If you don’t know about the Amalfi lemons, now you do! They are famous for these giant lemons that you will see all over the place. The trees are so pretty, but you will see them in everything from desserts to cocktails! One of the most popular ways to enjoy Amalfi lemons is in limoncello, a refreshing lemon liqeur, that’s typically served after a meal.
