What to Wear on an Airplane
Gone are the glamorous days of air travel when people used to dress to the nines. What a time to be alive when flights were seen as a special occasion! Nowadays, you can wear almost anything you like. Here are a few things you should consider when planning your airplane looks:
- Flight time and layovers – Firstly, dress according to your needs for an overnight flight vs a quick 2-hour flight.
- Dress for the weather in your destination – If you are heading somewhere snowy, but it’s summer where you are from, dress for the destination. You want to have a coat and warm shoes handy on arrival.
- DO Wear Layers – Next, always bring layers so you can easily add or remove things to stay comfortable whether the plane is hot or cold.
- DO Wear practical shoes – I always opt for sneakers when flying. Mostly, it is more comfortable when navigating the airport especially if you need to run to catch a connection. I try to avoid sandals and heels. This also saves room in your carry-on as tennis shoes are likely the bulkiest shoe.
- Don’t Wear Anything too Skimpy – we get you are going to Mexico, but save the outfits for when you get there. Don’t wear anything too skimpy out of respect for fellow travelers and the airline. Some airlines will even turn you away so check the dress codes.
- Avoid Shorts – as a female, I like to avoid shorts because for one, it could be cold, and two, I don’t want my body sticking to the seat (seems germ-y).
- Avoid Jumpsuits and Rompers – I prefer to avoid one piece outfits like a jumpsuit. While they seem like an ideal choice, I don’t want to be taking that thing off in an airplane bathroom. I think it is fine for a short, direct flight though. I did wear one while pregnant to try it out and it was super comfortable, but not worth it for bathroom breaks!
- Choose Smart Colors – I choose to wear black most of the time. Flights can be long and dark colors work well to keep you looking fresh and hiding any spills (from you or your neighbors).
- Restrictive clothing – I recommend to avoid anything too restricting like jeans. It can be uncomfortable to sit in jeans especially with the seat belt on or if you get delayed for a long time.
Cute Airplane Outfits
I personally like to aim for comfort when traveling. I also only pack in carry-on so I try to make sure my travel outfit will be one I wear again. For me, that usually looks like a workout set that I will wear for an actual workout one day and allows me to wear my sneakers, saving space in my suitcase. It’s also comfortable for sleeping on an overnight flight. Here are some things that I recommend whatever your style may be!

The best airplane outfits are cute, but comfortable. I like to wear pant sets, leggings, or a cotton maxi dress. Be sure to have access to lightweight layers so you can adjust to the plane’s temperature. It is usually cold on planes!

Pick out a super cute, but comfortable set! Pick something with soft fabrics and that is not restrictive. Pajamas these days can look super chic! I also recommend cotton maxi dresses to look stylish, but is something you could also sleep in.
I wear the same things to fly no matter the season because airplanes can be cold. If you are heading somewhere warm for the summer, bring layers so you can take them off when you land. Leggings, maxi dresses, and lightweight sets paired with jackets are all great choices.
