I’m excited to share my Bürgenstock Hotel and Alpine Spa review with you! During our summer vacation, we had the pleasure of staying at this incredible luxury resort and instantly fell in love with its elegance and charm.
Nestled in the Swiss Alps, the Bürgenstock Hotel is a true gem, offering both timeless elegance and modern luxury. Originally opened in 1873, it quickly became a magnet for Hollywood stars and the elite, hosting luminaries like Audrey Hepburn, Sofia Loren, and even President Jimmy Carter. Today, it stands as one of Europe’s most prestigious hotels, exuding old-world charm while embracing contemporary sophistication following its recent renovation in 2017.
With four hotels, multiple restaurants, a 110,000-square-foot spa, a golf course, and a wealth of leisure activities, the Bürgenstock Resort offers everything you could want for an unforgettable stay. Whether visiting in the summer or winter, this resort is the ultimate destination for anyone seeking luxury and wellness in Switzerland.
In this review, I’ll be sharing all about my personal experience staying at the Bürgenstock. As always, we paid for our own stay at this hotel, and all opinions are my own.

Why We Love the Bürgenstock
There are countless reasons to love the Bürgenstock Resort, and we’ll share them all in this post. But if you’re short on time, here are our top 5 reasons we fell in love with it!

Where is the Bürgenstock Resort? How Do I Get There?
The Bürgenstock Resort is located in Switzerland above beautiful Lake Lucerne in the Burgenberg Mountain range. The closest airport is Zurich International Airport at 1.5 hours driving distance or about three hours from Geneva International Airport.
You can also hop on the train from anywhere in Switzerland to reach Lucerne in about 2.5 hours on average as it is centrally located in the country.
Coming from Lucerne, you can access the resort via boat and the funicular or driving up the mountain.
Personally, we flew into Geneva where we stayed for one night. The next day, we drove to Lucerne making stops in both Bern and Interlaken along the way. We ended our Swiss 5 day roadtrip in Zurich and flew out of Zurich.
The Rooms at the Bürgenstock Hotel
Elegant, modern, thoughtful, exclusive, and breathtaking—these are just a few words that come to mind when describing the luxurious rooms and suites at the Bürgenstock Hotel. Each room is artfully designed, featuring panoramic views of Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps, along with a cozy fireplace that divides the living area from a plunge jacuzzi. The elegant furnishings and attention to detail create a truly refined atmosphere.
We stayed in a Lake View Room, and the following pictures showcase this room type. The Bürgenstock offers a variety of suites in its 102-room hotel, including options with private massage rooms, saunas, and even a penthouse for those traveling with a group or family.
Bürgenstock Hotel Alpine Spa and Pool
The Bürgenstock Hotel Alpine Spa and Pool deserves its own section on the blog. It is one of the nicest (and largest) spas I have ever been to, with Six Senses Zil Pasyon right behind it.
The main feature is the large infinity pool overlooking Lake Lucerne and the Alps. It’s an indoor/outdoor pool available to guests regardless of a spa reservation. You do need to check-in with the spa staff first though.
Make sure to head downstairs from the pool to check out the sauna (private women’s option available), cold plunge pool at 14°C, and relaxation room. The relaxation room is endless with plenty of options to sit! We spent an hour here reading books next to the floor to ceiling windows!
You’ll also have access to the locker rooms with showers, robes, hair dryers, etc. Everything you need to get ready!
The fitness center is also located near the spa. It is quite spacious with bikes, treadmills, free weights and more.
Things to do at the Bürgenstock Resort Hotel
There is plenty to do at the Bürgenstock Hotel – I could truly spend weeks here! They have indoor tennis, a cinema, paragliding and much more. Whether you seek adventure, luxury, wellness, or culinary experiences, you’ll find it at Burgenstock!
1. Hike to the Hammetschwand Lift
The Hammetschwand Lift first opened in 1905 to carry guests 502 feet up to the summit in under one minute and is the tallest exterior elevator in Europe.
You will start your hike right near the hotel and Sharq restaurant. It can be steep at times, but nothing too difficult – I am not a hiker and was mostly fine even in my white sneakers.
You’ll reach the Hammetschwand Lift and can pay a small fee to take it to the very top. I suggest a one way ticket and hike down the other side through the cow pastures like we did. However, you can do a round trip ticket to go up and back down.
At the top, there is a restaurant, Bergrestaurant Hammetschwand, where you can stop for a beer and snacks – just remember to bring cash! We learned the hard way and couldn’t grab a drink or even use the restrooms!
2. Bürgenstock Hotel Spa and Pool
Need I say more? The Bürgenstock Hotel Spa is world-class, offering a range of treatments from massages to facials, all set in a stunning location with views of Lake Lucerne. Be sure to book a spa appointment and spend time in the indoor pool, which boasts panoramic windows, or take a dip in the outdoor infinity pool for even more breathtaking scenery.
Afterward, unwind in the saunas, steam rooms, or cold plunge pool—the perfect way to relax after a day of exploring the resort. It’s an essential part of the Bürgenstock experience!
3. Take a drive down to Lucerne to explore
Lucerne is just a 20-minute drive from the Bürgenstock Resort, or you can take a scenic boat ride. This charming town is rich in history and boasts stunning medieval architecture, including the famous Chapel Bridge and Water Tower. It’s the perfect spot to wander through cobblestone streets, explore local shops, and enjoy lakeside views.
4. Play Golf or Tennis at Bürgenstock Hotel Alpine Course
The resort offers year-round tennis with an indoor facility, perfect for staying active regardless of the weather. If it’s a sunny day, enjoy a round of golf at the stunning Bürgenstock Resort Alpine Course, or warm up at the driving range with breathtaking mountain views.
5. Museum Corridor at Bürgenstock Hotel
Take a few minutes to explore the Museum Corridor at the Bürgenstock Hotel, a quick but fascinating walk that showcases the history of this iconic resort and its transformation over the years.
6. Ride the Funicular
A ride on the historic Bürgenstock Funicular is a must. Dating back to 1893, this cable car offers incredible views as it transports you down to the lake, giving you a unique perspective of the resort’s stunning location.
7. Farmer’s Market
If you’re lucky enough to visit during the Farmer’s Market, don’t miss the chance to stroll through. It’s the perfect way to experience the local culture and pick up fresh produce, artisanal goods, and Swiss specialties.
Dining at the Bürgenstock Resort
The Bürgenstock Resort offers a diverse array of culinary experiences, with seven gourmet restaurants serving dishes from around the world.
Whether you’re craving local Swiss flavors or international cuisine, they’ve got something to suit every palate—and don’t worry, dietary restrictions are well catered for.
I only wish we had more time to explore all the delicious options!
1. Spices Kitchen and Terrace
Spices was our favorite dinner spot throughout our time at Burgenstock. Featuring elements from China, Japan, Thailand, and India, Spices curates dishes overflowing with flavor.
The atmosphere is vibrant and lively, as the dining space surrounds the open kitchen. We had sushi, red curry, and pad thai. This is a great spot with plenty of vegan/vegetarian options.
2. Oak Grill and Pool Patio
After a relaxing time by the pool, we enjoyed a delightful lunch at the Oak Grill and Pool Patio. This farm-to-table dining experience began with a glass of champagne, followed by grilled seabass, an organic herb salad, and crispy sweet potato fries—everything was fresh and delicious!
3. Sharq Oriental
For those craving Middle Eastern flavors, Sharq Oriental offers a delicious selection of mezzes and platters. From creamy hummus to crispy falafel and succulent kebabs, this restaurant serves up vibrant, flavorful dishes that transport you straight to the heart of the Middle East.
4. Osteria Alpina
Osteria Alpina was unfortunately closed during our visit, but it’s worth noting for future travelers.
This charming Italian restaurant features a beautiful patio with views of the rolling green hills, making it the perfect setting for a relaxed, al fresco meal.
5. Verbena Restaurant and Bar
Located at the Waldhotel, Verbena Restaurant and Bar is known for its healthy, fresh offerings. Expect dishes packed with fresh fish, lots of vegetables, and light, nutritious options—ideal for anyone looking to enjoy a wholesome meal without compromising on flavor.
6. Ritz Coffier Restaurant
Ritz Coffier is the French restaurant located at the Palace Hotel. With its elegant atmosphere and classic French cuisine, it offers a refined dining experience that’s perfect for those looking to indulge in timeless French dishes.
7. Taverne 1879 Bürgenstock Resort
Taverne 1879 is a casual and cozy Swiss Chalet-style restaurant just steps from the Bürgenstock Hotel. It’s the perfect spot to relax after a hike, where you can enjoy traditional Swiss dishes like fondue and rösti.
Feel free to wear your hiking boots—it’s all about comfort and great food here!
8. Lakeview Bar and Cigar Lounge
We enjoyed drinks and light snacks at the Lakeview Bar and Cigar Lounge on our first night at the hotel. Located just off the main lobby, this lounge features floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of Lake Lucerne.
It’s the ideal spot to unwind with a cocktail before ordering room service, which, by the way, is also available through their menu here. I do highly recommend room service at some point to really soak up the luxury of your suite!
The Wrap Up: Bürgenstock Hotel Review
Arriving at the Bürgenstock Hotel Switzerland, up the winding mountains and approaching the grand entrance, feels sort of like you are arriving at the most luxurious summer camp! Ready to indulge in 5 star accommodations, partake in outdoor activities, and wine and dine every night.
If you visit in the winter, I imagine it is a completely different feel while the property is blanketed in white snow. I can only guess that it is the coziest winter spot on the planet in front of the many fireplaces.
