Il Sereno feels completely different from most Lake Como hotels. You won’t find ornate decor or over-the-top opulence here. Instead, you’ll experience clean lines, natural materials, and a calm, understated kind of luxury which I personally adore!
Why I Chose Il Sereno Over Other Lake Como Hotels
Lake Como, Italy has no shortage of incredible hotels, but each one offers a very different experience.
I considered staying at Villa d’Este, Grand Hotel Tremezzo, and even Passalacqua—each iconic in its own way. They feel classic, lively, and more traditional, which can be wonderful, but not exactly what I was looking for this trip.
For us, the priorities were clear:
- More intimate
- More peaceful
- More design-driven
- More baby-friendly
Il Sereno stood out immediately. It feels like a hidden retreat on the lake, with a quieter atmosphere, modern aesthetic, and effortless elegance. Honestly, it’s very me—a calm, stylish escape where you can truly soak in Lake Como without the crowds. Plus, babies are truly welcomed here!
Il Sereno’s Location on Lake Como
Il Sereno is located in Torno, Italy on the eastern side of Lake Como.
What I loved:
- It’s removed from the crowds
- The views feel uninterrupted and incredibly peaceful
- You get a true “escape” feeling
The only trade-off is that you’re not within walking distance to the main towns, but that’s honestly part of the appeal. We could walk to the charming little town of Torno and it’s GREAT restaurants which we so loved doing!
Getting around is easy by boat, and the hotel can arrange transfers to Bellagio, Varenna, and Como. They even have self driving boats if you want to go at your own pace! We loved doing this and it made exploring feel like part of the experience.

The Rooms & Suites at Il Sereno Hotel
One of the biggest highlights: every room at Il Sereno faces the lake. That alone makes it special, but the design is what really sets it apart.
You can expect:
- Floor-to-ceiling windows that completely open up to the water
- Private terraces with direct, unobstructed lake views
- Natural materials like wood and stone that bring warmth to the modern design
- A calming, neutral color palette that instantly makes the space feel relaxed
It feels incredibly serene (in the truest sense of the word). Waking up to Lake Como every morning was easily one of my favorite parts of our stay.
We especially loved the balcony. It was spacious with plenty of seating, and it truly felt like an extension of the room. It’s the kind of spot where you’ll want to linger with your morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening!
As a mom, one detail I really appreciated was how thoughtfully designed the railings are. They’re secure and fully enclosed in a way that felt incredibly safe for a toddler—no wide gaps or areas to worry about. This design continues throughout the entire property, which made such a difference in how relaxed we felt during our stay.
The bathroom was just as impressive with spacious, beautifully designed, and incredibly functional. You can expect:

They also went above and beyond with family-friendly touches. We were provided with baby amenities like bath toys, gentle shampoo, and even a diaper pail, which made traveling with a little one feel so much easier and more comfortable.
They also provided cute foot pajamas with the hotel logo and this super soft elephant stuffed animal (pictured below). She still sleeps with it every night!

The Pool at Il Sereno Lago di Como
The pool at Il Sereno is truly one of the most iconic on Lake Como and it’s what really drew us here for our Lake Como Babymoon!
It’s a sleek, infinity-style pool that sits directly on the lake’s edge, with loungers thoughtfully placed around it and the mountains perfectly framing the view. It feels private, peaceful, and effortlessly elevated. It is exactly the kind of spot where you can lose track of time.
We spent entire afternoons here just reading, soaking in the sun, and admiring the lake. It’s also surprisingly family-friendly. Our toddler loved splashing around and we noticed several other families with babies or toddlers enjoying the pool as well.
Whether you’re traveling as a couple looking for serenity or as a family wanting a safe, beautiful place to relax, the pool at Il Sereno makes it hard to leave the property.
Dining at Il Sereno Hotel
The main restaurant at Il Sereno is truly a destination in itself. It’s tucked just below the hotel, almost cave-like, set right along the water. The setting feels incredibly intimate, with the lake just steps away and views that make the entire experience feel special from the moment you sit down.
Here’s why we loved it:

- A stunning lakefront setting that feels like you’re dining inside a hidden cove
Dinner here feels like an experience, not just a meal. It’s one of those places where everything—from the atmosphere to the service to the food—comes together in a really memorable way.
Breakfast is also worth highlighting, especially if you book with VIP perks (more on that below). You can expect a mix of à la carte options and classic Italian favorites, all served with that same beautiful view of Lake Como.
We actually opted for in-room dining most mornings, and it was such a treat. Breakfast was complimentary, and having it delivered to our terrace made the experience feel even more relaxed and private.
There’s also a more casual bar and lounge area, which we loved for slower moments during the day. It’s the perfect spot to sit back, enjoy a drink, and take in the lake views.
Another standout for us was the in-room dining. You can order anytime, which was especially helpful traveling with a toddler. We had several meals out on our balcony while our little one napped, and every single one was just as delicious. It made the entire stay feel effortless and really elevated the experience.
The Spa & Wellness
The spa at Il Sereno is more intimate than you’ll find at larger resorts, but it’s beautifully done. It has treatment rooms overlooking the water and calm quiet atmosphere. The focus is completely on relaxation here!
There’s also a gym and wellness offerings, but I didn’t even look at the gym to be honest.

The self-drive boats are a particular highlight. It felt so freeing to take the helm ourselves, explore hidden corners of the lake, and stop in little towns whenever we wanted. For anyone visiting Lake Como, this is an experience you really shouldn’t miss—it’s a rare mix of adventure and luxury, all from your hotel’s doorstep.
Exploring Lake Como
Il Sereno is the perfect base for exploring nearby towns. We took a boat to Bellagio for day. It’s the iconic town you hear about on the lake that is a must see. It was busy, but still worth seeing. We had lunch at a hotel there which allowed us to dock the boat and then walked around for a bit. You have to check out Freesia art studio – we came home with a gorgeous painting of the lake!
There is also Varenna which is a bit quieter, but we didn’t have time to explore since we had a little one with us and not enough days on the lake!
You can also visit historic villas, stroll waterfront promenades, and spend time just wandering.
Service & Overall Experience at Il Sereno
Service at Il Sereno feels very personalized and relaxed. It’s attentive without being overly formal, which fits the overall vibe of the hotel perfectly. Everything feels seamless and thoughtfully done.
One of my favorite touches for parents was that they had a private wifi network for baby monitors. If you’ve ever traveled with a monitor that requires a secure connection, you’ll understand how nice this is!
They were happy to help with transfers and directions from Milan to Lake Como so we could reach the hotel. They also arranged drivers when we need a ride to lunch and were overall so kind!
Onsite, they were just so kind and friendly and made a point to stop and check-in on our stay whenever they saw us. They were so kind to our daughter too!
For most travelers, I’d recommend staying 3+ nights to really enjoy both the hotel and the surrounding towns.
