Where to Stay in Paris: Arrondissement Breakdown
Firstly, you should know that Paris neighborhoods are broken down into 20 arrondissements. It is shaped like a snail with the numbers going in a spiral with the Seine River running through the middle. Above all, this will be helpful for planning your days by which arrondissements are close to one another like 7 and 15! Additionally, see the below map when planning.
Here is an overview of some more popular neighborhoods:
1st and 2nd Arrondissements
First, you will spend a lot of time in the 1st and 2nd arrondissements as this is where all the main tourist sites are located. You will find the Louvre, Opera House, big tourist hotels, etc.
3rd and 4th Arrondissements
We spent ample time in the 3rd and 4th arrondissements known as Les Halles and the Marais. This is where the city was in the medieval times so it is historic with cobblestone streets. Today, it is fun and colorful with great shopping, bars, restaurants, and more. Be sure to spend time in the Place des Vosges park which has a statue of Louis XIII in the center. There is lots of shade to break from the summer heat!
5th, 6th, and 7th Arrondissements
Next, the 5th, 6th, and 7th Arrondissements are known as the Latin Quarter and St. Germain. These are great neighborhoods for souvenir shopping with narrow streets to wander through.
11th Arrondissement
The 11th Arrondissement is an incredibly hip neighborhood perfect for young foodies and fashionistas! It is more residential and diverse in its bar and gourmet restaurant scene. You will find the city’s newest opera house here too, Opera Bastille.
In summary, where you stay totally depends on what you plan to see and do. We stayed in the 2nd arrondissement for my first trip to Paris and it was a perfect location easily walkable to most sites!
Best Hotels to Stay at in Paris in the Summer
My top hotel choices for a summer visit to Paris.
The Hoxton Paris
We chose to stay at The Hoxton Paris as this is one of my favorite hotel brands. If the city has a Hoxton, you will find me there!
The Hoxton Paris is a super trendy hotel located in the 2nd arrondissement which is walking distance to everything. In fact, we pretty much walked everywhere we needed to go like the Eiffel Tower, Seine River, the Marais, etc!
The rooms are cozy with hip decor as are the many bars and dining outlets! My favorite feature at The Hoxton is the breakfast bags – fill out a card with your choices and delivery time and it will be waiting at your door the next morning!
This particular property has the BEST courtyard perfect for lounging and sipping cocktails. We spent tons of time here and there were travelers and locals alike enjoying the space.
The Ritz Paris
The Ritz Paris is an iconic, landmark hotel in Paris. If you are looking for the ultimate in luxury, I highly recommend staying at the Ritz Paris! It is located in the 1st arrondissement close to everything. In addition, it is home to the iconic bar, Bar Hemingway, which was an old haunt of the writer.
Four Seasons Hotel George V
You can never go wrong at a Four Seasons and the Four Seasons Hotel George V is the epitome of elegance! Similarly, this is another landmark and luxurious Paris hotel built in 1928. The rooms feature stunning views of the Eiffel Tower and the fine dining restaurants share a whopping 5 Michelin stars combined! You will find this hotel in the 8th arrondissement.
Cheval Blanc Paris
Next, I recommend another 5 star luxury hotel which opened in 2021 in the 1st arrondissement, Cheval Blanc Paris. With only 72 rooms, you will enjoy the intimate nature of this hotel located in the heart of historic Paris! Above all, my favorite thing about this hotel is the rooftop, Le Tout Paris, that showcases a stunning view of the Parisian skyline.
Best Things to Do in Paris in the Summer
See the most iconic sights of Paris, but also enjoy some non-touristy activities.
Picnic in Luxembourg Gardens
This is one of my favorite things to do in Paris! Luxembourg Gardens is a beautiful park with perfect landscaping and historical sites.
Leisurely tip: Pick up a bottle of wine at L’Etiquette and have a picnic in the grassy areas. You can also buy cups and a corkscrew here.
Spend a Day in Montmartre & See Sacre Coeur
Montmartre is located in the northern side of Paris and has a stunning view looking back towards the city. Stroll the neighborhood and be sure to check out the square where all of the artists station as well as Sacre Coeur, Basilica of Sacred Heart.
In addition, you can tour the Museé de Montmartre for an introduction to the history, art, and cultural importance of this area. The museum was formerly the home and studio of many famous artists like Renoir.
Plan to have lunch at La Maison Rose, the most charming café!
Stroll Around the Marais
We spent lots of time wandering around the Marais. There are tons of boutiques and art galleries for shopping and many cafes for lunch or drinks!
This was the main city center in the medieval times so there are cobblestone streets and colorful buildings! Make sure to enjoy the shade (or have another picnic) at the Place des Vosges park which has a statue of Louis XIII in the center.
Visit the Louvre Museum
You must visit the Louvre Museum if not simply to admire the exterior of this fabulous museum. Inside see works of art like the famous Mona Lisa and many others in the world’s greatest art museum.
See the Eiffel Tower Sparkle
You can’t visit Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle at night! Make sure to see it late at night once it is completely dark. Keep in mind, summer sunset in Paris is not until 10pm!
Take a Walk along the Seine River
You will take lots of walks along the Seine River as it runs through the heart of Paris. There are tons of outdoor cafes to check out, too!
See the Love Lock Bridge, Pont des Arts
The Love Lock Bridge is the famous bridge in Paris where couples place a lock on the bridge with their names and throw the lock in the river. Today, it is illegal to place a lock on Pont des Arts so I don’t recommend doing so, but it’s still special to admire!
Notre Dame Cathedral
Although Notre Dame is still undergoing renovations from the fire in 2019, you have to stop by and take in this beautiful cathedral. It is expected to reopen in 2024 after restoration is completed.
Admire the Arc de Triomphe
Take a drive over to the Arc de Triomphe. You can go to the top for incredible views of Paris, but it is more stunning to look at it from a distance in my opinion!
Day Trip to Versailles
Take a day trip to Versailles where you can tour the world renowned Chateau de Versailles and the gardens of Versailles. Named a UNESCO world heritage site, the Palace of Versailles was the main residence of the French Kings from the time of Louis XIV to Louis XVI.

Tips When Traveling to Paris in the Summer
Some important tips to keep in mind when spending summer in Paris.
Plan Ahead
You will want to plan ahead for seeing the more popular attractions. In fact, plan to buy tickets in advance for these places. For instance, I visited Paris in June a few years ago and the Louvre would sell out every single day (there was a heat wave and everyone was trying to escape the sun).
Avoid Peak Times
Try to avoid peak times at the more popular sites. For example, this may mean waking up early to avoid the crowds. I suggest a morning run/walk along the Seine to admire the Eiffel Tower without tons of tourists around. Afterwards, grab a croissant and coffee!
Paris Museum Pass
Speaking of planning ahead, save yourself time and money by purchasing the Paris Museum Pass for your next vacation to Paris.
Pack Your SPF + Sunglasses
It will be warm (it’s summer, afterall) so plan to protect yourself with sunscreen and sunglasses. Also, maybe take a mini deodorant in your purse while out walking around!
Don’t Expect Air Conditioning
Yep, really. Do not expect everywhere to have air conditioning in Europe like we do in the US. Nonetheless, I do recommend ensuring your hotel in Paris has A/C for the summer season!
Comfortable Shoes
If you are anything like me, you will do a TON of walking in Paris. It’s the best way to truly take in the magic of Paris! Make sure to pack comfortable (and cute) walking shoes. Sharing my favorite white sneakers here that go with everything from dresses to jeans!
Enjoy the Long Nights
It stay dark until almost midnight in Paris especially in June near summer solstice. Take advantage of the long nights and cooler temperatures to explore the city. Have a late dinner, grab rooftop cocktails, take a stroll along the Seine and enjoy the Eiffel Tower in all her glory.
