Looking for an honest Monos Hybrid Carry-On review? You’re in the right place.
Short answer? Yes, I think the Monos Hybrid Carry On is worth it. From the moment I opened the box, I could tell this suitcase was on another level. The quality was immediately obvious and it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of luggage I’ve owned.
I’ve used Monos luggage since 2021 and took my Classic Carry-On all over the world from weekend trips to long-haul international flights. It’s held up incredibly well. So well, in fact, that my husband eventually claimed it for himself.
When we planned a ten day trip to Japan, I decided it was the perfect time to upgrade and really put the Hybrid to the test. With bullet trains, tight transfers, and compact hotel rooms, I needed luggage that was both durable and efficient.
In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about the Monos Hybrid: how it compares to the Classic, whether the zipperless design is actually practical, if it’s spacious enough, and how it performed during real travel.
I also paired it with the Monos Metro Duffel as my personal item to maximize carry-on space and will share my thoughts on it as well.
Read on for all you need to know before investing in Monos luggage! I’ll start with my review of the hybrid carry-on, compare it to the classic carry-on, then share the perfect personal item to pair it with!

But first, I want you to know that I wrote my first review of a Monos suitcase back in 2021. So many of you loved it that Monos actually reached out and offered to gift me these items. Now that I’ve had the chance to travel with them, I’m excited to share my honest thoughts with you. I write this blog to help you make the most of your travels, so as always, all opinions are my own.
My Experience Traveling with the Monos Hybrid Carry-On
I recently traveled from the United States to Japan for 10 days using only carry-on luggage, including the Monos Hybrid Carry-On. Yes, even with a toddler in tow! It took some planning, but we made it work. Here is all about my experience and thoughts after traveling with this premium carry-on.
Packing and Capacity
We each packed in a carry-on: my husband took the Classic and I used the Hybrid. Our toddler’s clothes fit in with my husband’s things, and we used our personal items for diapers, wipes, food, toys, and all the extras that come with traveling as a family.
I was surprised at how much fit in the 36-liter Hybrid especially with my compression packing cubes. The heavy-duty compression pad really helped squeeze things down, and everything I needed for 10 days fit without a problem.
I was a little nervous about the zipperless frame, especially because I usually pack so full that I have to sit on my suitcase to zip it. Good news – I still had to sit on it, but it closed easily and felt really secure.
One of the biggest wins? The size. The Hybrid is exactly 45 linear inches, which is the maximum allowed for Singapore Airlines (our flight to Japan) and many other international carriers.
U.S. airlines usually allow a bit more wiggle room, but in Europe and Asia, stricter size limits can lead to surprise baggage fees. So if you’re traveling internationally, skip the Plus size and go with the standard.

Airport and In-Flight Experience
The Hybrid was a breeze to roll through airports and train stations. The wheels are smooth and quiet, and even though it’s a couple of pounds heavier than the Classic, I couldn’t tell a difference. I had no trouble lifting it into the overhead bins myself.
When TSA had to search my entire suitcase (because I was carrying so much milk and toddler food), they noted how organized the suitcase was. She told me I was a great packer (all thanks to the organization of my Monos suitcase!)
I’m not even surprised that multiple people stopped me to compliment my luggage. It really is that pretty in person.
Durability and Performance
This was the suitcase’s first international trip, and it held up beautifully over 6 flights, 2 trains and 4 hotel stays. No major scratches or dents, and it still looks great after being tossed around through multiple flights and layovers. Here is an after picture for you to see for yourself:
Pros and Cons
What I loved:
- The sleek, stylish design
- The golden champagne color (slightly darker than the website, but in the best way)
- The compression pad that actually works
- The nostalgic zipperless frame that reminded me of my parents’ vintage luggage
- The hidden handle button
- Quiet wheels and solid structure
- More durable than my Classic Carry-On, with fewer dents and scratches
Things to note:
- The handle can stick if you’ve packed it pretty full, but rearranging usually fixes it. Though, this is super annoying when you are trying to get off the plane efficiently and the handle won’t come up.
- The zipperless frame might not be for everyone. I liked the idea, but think I prefer a zipper so I can overpack a bit easier.
- It scuffed a little, but every suitcase does, and a magic eraser took care of it. The color hides scratches much better than my black suitcase.
Overall, this carry-on was the MVP of our trip. Stylish, sturdy, and surprisingly spacious. I look forward to bringing it on our next international adventure to Italy this summer!
Detailed Features of the Monos Hybrid Carry-On
Now for all of the technical features of the Hybrid Carry-On and what I loved most about it.
Dimensions & Capacity
The Monos Hybrid Carry-On measures 22” x 14” x 9” and holds 36 liters, making it perfect for most airline carry-on restrictions. No stressing at the gate – this one’s good to go.
We were flying to Japan on Singapore Airlines and they are much more strict than American based airlines so 45 inches in total was the maximum size we could take! When I shopped similar companies, many were slightly above or below these dimensions. I wanted as much space as possible so this was perfect size-wise for me so I can pack for more two week trips.

Weight
At 8.81 lbs (4 kg), it’s a little heavier than some other carry-ons, but that’s the trade-off for a sturdier, more secure build. You’re getting premium materials, not flimsy plastic. Like I’ve mentioned already, I couldn’t really notice a difference in the weight.
Materials
Monos blends aluminum and polycarbonate for the best of both worlds: the durability of aluminum with the lightweight flexibility of polycarbonate. The shell is polycarbonate with the aluminum used for the frame and as corner reinforcements to offer extra support and a nice vintage touch!
It’s tough without being too bulky and clearly built to handle real travel.

Unique Design Features
- Zipperless Aluminum Frame – Say goodbye to busted zippers. This suitcase locks shut with two TSA-approved latches, keeping everything extra secure.
- Aluminum Corner Guards – Designed to take the impact so your suitcase (and what’s inside) stays protected.
- Thoughtful Interior – Inside, you’ll find:
- Anti-microbial lining to keep things fresh.
- A removable compression pad to help you pack smarter.
- Laundry and shoe bags because no one wants dirty shoes next to clean clothes.
- Complimentary Luggage Tag – each bag comes with a vegan leather luggage tag so you’re ready to go!
Monos didn’t cut corners on this one. It’s built to last and designed to make travel easier. When you’re not traveling, it comes with a luggage cover to keep it clean while stored.

Classic Monos Carry On vs. Hybrid Carry On
Wondering which Monos carry on is the best? Since I have both the regular and hybrid versions, I wanted to offer a comparison of the Monos Carry On vs Hybrid Carry On. I know some of you may be deciding between the two so here’s what you need to know!

Materials & Build
The Classic Carry-On is made entirely of polycarbonate, which is lightweight, flexible, and impact-resistant.
The Hybrid Carry-On combines polycarbonate with aluminum, making it more durable with added protection from its aluminum frame and reinforced corners.
If you’re tough on luggage or just want something extra sturdy, the Hybrid wins in durability. But if you prefer something a little lighter, the Classic is still a solid choice. I have used the classic carry-on for years and it is still in great condition.
Here is a look at where the classic carry on stands today after dozens of flights over 4 years. You can see there are a light scratches, but no major marks or damages. It has been wiped down with soap and water after our trip.
⭐️>>Here is the exact bag that I have

Weight & Capacity
The Hybrid is heavier, but at just under 2 lbs more, it’s not a dealbreaker. There is a little difference in volume, but both fit about the same amount of clothes in my experience.
I will say, the hybrid carry on felt much lighter and rolled smoother than the Monos classic carry-on. I was often rolling both of our suitcases while my husband carried our daughter and could tell a difference.
| Suitcase | Weight | Capacity & Volume |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Carry-On | 7.01 lbs | 28L & 39.9L |
| Hybrid Carry-On | 8.81 lbs | 29L & 36L |
Design & Aesthetics
The Classic Carry-On comes in a wide range of colors, making it easier to personalize your luggage style. They have everything from terracotta to pastel purple!
The Hybrid Carry-On has a sleek, metallic finish and a zipperless design. It looks ultra-modern, but the shiny surface may not be for everyone.
If you love a polished, high-end look, the Hybrid is stunning. But if you prefer more color options, the Classic is the way to go.
Either way, you can get these cute alphabet stickers to add your name or initials to personalize your luggage!
Functionality
The Hybrid’s zipperless aluminum frame with TSA locks adds an extra layer of security and no risk of broken zippers! With luggage delays and lost bags becoming more common, I appreciate the extra peace of mind if I needed to check it.
Both have the same telescopic handle and buttery smooth wheels, making them equally easy to maneuver. Though, I found the hybrid to roll slightly easier. Plus, the handle has a bit more cushion for added comfort and grip.
Cost and Value
The Hybrid Carry-On is priced at $355, while the Classic comes in at $275.
That $80 difference is definitely a premium, but if you want the features of the Hybrid without spending $600 on other high-end brands, it’s a great value. You get the zipperless frame, aluminum corners, and a more elevated design at a more reasonable price.
That said, if you’re deciding between the two and cost is a concern, the Classic Carry-On is a great place to start. If you’re planning to carry it on and not check it, you don’t really need the added durability of the Hybrid. The Classic still looks great, rolls smoothly, and holds everything you need for a trip.
Final Thoughts on Monos Carry On vs Hybrid
If you want a lighter, more colorful option, go with the Classic Carry-On. But if security, durability, and a sleek metallic look are more important to you, the Hybrid is worth the slight weight and cost increase.
If you are worried about cost, the classic carry on is a bit more affordable. I think the Hybrid is very nice, but for most people, the regular carry on is fine!

The Perfect Personal Item: Monos Metro Duffel
Now that you’ve hopefully decided which carry on is right for you, you’ll need a great bag to pair with it as your personal item!

Meet the Metro Duffel
The first time my husband saw this bag, he paused, looked very seriously at me, and said, “That is a very nice bag.” He rarely comments on anything I wear, whether it’s bags or clothes, so that pretty much sealed the deal for me.
The Metro Duffel is sleek, stylish, and thoughtfully designed. I went with the ivory color, which looks a little darker in person than on the website. These photos are unedited and show the true color! Honestly, I like it even better this way. It’s still neutral and chic, just a little warmer.
The vegan leather is buttery soft and feels super durable. And truly, why are we still using animals for leather when materials like this exist? This bag proves you don’t have to sacrifice style or function to make a kinder choice.
Favorite Features
This bag is the most organized I’ve ever been while traveling. There’s a padded laptop sleeve that fits up to a 14-inch laptop, a bunch of interior pockets (yes to designated spots for water bottles), and a clever luggage sleeve with a zippered bottom that turns into an extra pocket when you’re not using it on your suitcase handle.
I was able to pack all of my personal items plus snacks and toys/entertainment for my toddler in this bag. We both had everything we needed for a long haul flight!

One of my favorite features is the detachable Metro Kit. I kept my phone, wallet, and meds in there for easy access at the airport. I was a little worried someone could grab it off, but it’s actually really secure. You can’t just pull it off thanks to the hidden snaps.

Another thing I loved about the detachable Metro Kit is that I could keep anything I wanted for the flight in this (airpods, sleep mask, lip mask, protein bars, etc). It was easy to detach it and then put the duffel in the overhead bin while having everything I needed at my seat.
Lastly, I loved this small but thoughtful feature on the handles. They placed a snap to connect the two handles together. I was able to throw a coat over the bag and it stayed put as we navigated airports!

On the Go
I paired the Metro Duffel with my Monos Hybrid Carry-On, and the combo was a dream. It slid right over the handle, stayed put, and kept me completely organized.
I’ve traveled with totes and backpacks before, but those always were such a mess of things tossed in. Often, a tote bag would make my suitcase fall over, but this stays put thankfully!
I could actually find what I needed, when I needed it, which was especially helpful when traveling with a toddler. Having quick access to snacks, wipes, and a change of clothes without digging around made all the difference.
And somehow, it fits way more than you’d expect. Stylish, practical, and mom-approved!
