Can I walk? Not to worry! I am answering all of your questions about transportation in Denmark in this guide.
I have been to Copenhagen several times now and it’s one of my favorite cities in the world. We have family friends that are Danish so we always make a stop to see them when we’re in Europe, which is at least once per year!

Is There Uber in Copenhagen, Denmark?
The answer is no, there is not Uber in Copenhagen right now. Thanks to taxi laws in the country, Uber does not operate in Denmark. However, you can still use the app for things like Uber Eats as this does not violate any taxi laws since it is a delivery service. You may also use the new feature on Uber that allows you to rent a car.
Is there an equivalent to Uber in Denmark? Best Ride Sharing Apps in Copenhagen
There are several options for app based taxi services in Copenhagen similar to Uber. Taxi services in Denmark are always way nicer than anywhere else. On our most recent visit to Copenhagen, we really liked using DanTaxi and it’s my number one recommendation for its ease of use, availability, and clean cars.
- DanTaxi – highly recommend!
- GoMore
- Viggo
- Blacklane
- Talixo
Pro Tip: Download the app ahead of time and load your credit card information so you are ready to go when you arrive.
How to get from Copenhagen Airport to downtown Copenhagen
The best way to reach the city center when you arrive to CPH airport is usually via taxi without using an app. I know this seems ancient in today’s world, but trust me! I always find this to be easy, fast, and affordable. When you exit the airport door, you will see the taxi line. You simply hop in line and wait your turn for the next car. This process is super quick and easy as it’s not a huge airport by any means. Be sure to have the address for your accommodation handy so you can give to the driver.
On our return to the airport, we always use DanTaxi to call for a ride.
There are four main ways to get to and from the airport in Copenhagen:
- Metro – located at Terminal 3
- Taxi – easily hail a cab when you exit the airport
- Rental Car – pickup your rental car right from the airport
- Bus – see this website for more details on taking the bus and best routes.
Best Ways to Get Around Copenhagen
There are many ways to get around Copenhagen once you arrive.
Biking
The city is very bike and pedestrian friendly which makes it such an incredible place to live and visit. The locals bike everywhere and there are tons of bike lanes with their own traffic lights which makes it easy and safe for visitors, too. Literally everyone bikes in Copenhagen even with their children and babies. It is the norm over cars.
There are several apps to help you easily locate and secure available bikes. We have found that the Lime App seems to work best during our visits. Be sure to download the app ahead of your trip so you are ready to go – it can take a while to download.
Walking
Copenhagen, especially near Nyhavn, is very walkable and safe. We usually walk when going to dinners or sightseeing and bike for anything that’s a little further across town. Since the locals bike so much, everyone wears comfortable shoes in Copenhagen. You don’t need to worry about bringing high heels – pack a pair of comfortable white sneakers or boots that go with everything and can take you from day to night. In the summer, I usually wear sandals too. The streets are historic and often cobblestoned, so you’ll want comfortable shoes anyways.
Metro
Copenhagen does have a metro system available for locals and visitors. They have recently been working to expand the metro so it now offers better connectivity across the city with a new line extension opening in 2024. It features four lines and there is not a specific schedule. Instead they offer departures every 90 seconds!
Buses
Copenhagen has a very safe and reliable public transportation system so the buses are not what you might think compared to other big cities. You can conveniently access the metro, bus, trains, and harbour bus all on one ticket
Train
Lastly, you can travel around Denmark via train. If you are planning to travel to different cities like Aarhaus then the train is the best so choice to relax and enjoy the Danish countryside. It is truly a beautiful country!
Best Bike Rental Apps in Copenhagen
I have visited Copenhagen many, many times so I have tried most of the biking apps in the city. My husband and I prefer the Lime App because it actually works. We often struggle to get some of the others to work well. Here are all the bike rental apps in Copenhagen that we download for our trips:
- LIME
- Donkey Republic
- TIER
PRO TIP: Download the apps ahead of time and load your credit card information so that you are ready to go when you arrive to Denmark.
Is Copenhagen Walkable?
Copenhagen is a very walkable and bikeable city! If you are staying in the city center near Nyhavn, then you will be in walking distance to many sites and restaurants. The city is flat and built around canals in a compact area.
Although, there are several places you might want to visit that are across town and a bit too far to walk. This is where biking comes in. Overall, you can get around on foot fairly easy in Copenhagen.
We like to stay at Hotel Sanders so we can walk everywhere! We often stay at Villa Copenhagen as well, but it usually requires more biking for us.
Car Rentals in Copenhagen
If you prefer to drive, you can rent a car in Copenhagen. It is pretty easy to drive and park in the city in our experience. Beware of bikers and pedestrians so everyone can stay safe! They have all of the same agencies you might be accustom to like Hertz, Avis, and Enterprise.
