Weather in Greece
Planning your outfits for Greece depends largely on the season you’re visiting. When planning what to wear in Greece, it’s crucial to consider the diverse weather throughout the year.
In April and May, temperatures begin to warm up, averaging between 60°F to 75°F, making it perfect for outfits like sundresses, shorts, and light cardigans for breezier moments.
During the summer months, expect temperatures to soar, often reaching highs in the 80s and sometimes into the 90s°F, so pack airy clothing like flowy maxi dresses, shorts, and tank tops to stay cool.
In September and October, Greece experiences pleasant temperatures ranging from around 70°F to 80°F during the day, with cooler evenings perfect for exploring ancient ruins or strolling through charming towns. Lightweight layers are key—think breezy tops, comfortable jeans or skirts, and a light jacket for cooler evenings. During the day, it can still be quite warm so be sure to pack your swimsuits. I personally always visit Greece in September for favorable weather sans crowds!
If visiting the Greek Islands in September October, be sure to pack a lightweight sweater for chilly evenings. The islands can be windy this time of year so I always bring a cute sweater to layer at night.
Versatile pieces that can mix and match will help you create multiple outfits while keeping your suitcase light. Here’s a quick chart to guide your packing:
| Month | Average Temperature (°F) |
|---|---|
| April | 60-70 |
| May | 65-75 |
| June, July, August | 80-90+ |
| September | 70-80 |
| October | 65-75 |
What to Wear to the Acropolis
If visiting the Greek Islands, you will likely spend a night or two in Athens where you can visit the famed Acropolis. When planning what to wear to the Acropolis of Greece, it’s important to consider practicality above all.
The terrain at the Acropolis can be uneven, so opt for comfortable and sturdy footwear like white sneakers or closed-toe sandals to navigate the ancient paths comfortably. Since you’ll be walking on rocky surfaces, avoid high heels or flip-flops to prevent tripping!
A crossbody bag or a small backpack is ideal for carrying essentials like water, sunscreen, and a camera, leaving your hands free to explore the historic site. Large bags and food are not permitted.
Weather at the Acropolis can vary, especially in the summer months when it can get scorching hot. Dress in lightweight, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen to stay cool under the sun. Wear a hat and sunglasses for added sun protection as there is no shade! If visiting in the winter or fall, bring a light jacket or sweater for early mornings or cooler evenings.
Regarding dress code for the Acropolis, while there isn’t a strict official dress code, it’s respectful to dress modestly out of cultural consideration. Plan to wear comfortable, but modest clothing such as appropriate length shorts or skirts, and avoid overly revealing outfits. This not only shows respect for the historical significance of the site but also ensures you’re comfortable during your visit.
Acropolis Outfits
I personally like to go early before the crowds and wear a cute workout set with sneakers! It’s quite an uphill walk to the top and you’ll likely be sweating in the summer. Here are a few of my favorites!
