Why do you need so many different glasses for wine? How many wine glasses should I have?
The shape and type of glass depends on which style of wine you are drinking. The glassware enhances the flavor of your bottles. But honestly, no matter what I am drinking, the bigger and more fragile the glass, the better experience! Sometimes, I think I love holding the glass more than anything.
For starters, you will want to at least get a set of white wine glasses, a red set, and of course some champagne flutes! I love to have a set of stemless glasses on hand too. And, if you live at the coast or lake, get some non-breakable glasses for the pool, beach, or boat!
What to look for in a wine glass?
There are several things to look for in a wine glass. Here are the top things to consider.
- First, you want thin glass. Thick glass is a sign of cheap, poor quality. Typically, it should be made from crystal.
- Next, consider red vs white and look for the bowl shape. This impacts the amount of wine surface exposed to the air. You want a wide bowl for reds and more narrow for whites. In a champagne glass you want a tall and narrow flute.
- Stem vs no stem? It’s up to you. Drinking from a stemless glass will warm the wine’s temperature by your hand that is holding it. I would say to do stemless for red wine and not white for this reason.
- The rim should be very thin on a wine glass. It will allow the wine to gently roll onto your tongue allowing the taste to be more smooth.
